'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the forum Not a Canes fan was posting, not close to a quorum; The banners were hung in the PNC with care, In hopes that St. Francis soon would be there; The hurricanes were nestled all snug in their beds; While visions of sniping forwards danced in their heads; When out in the parking lot arose such a clatter, Security sprang to see what was the matter. When what to my wondering eyes did appear, But a Ford F150 and tailgaters with beer, With a little old driver who gave us a wave, I knew in a moment he must be Super Dave. More rapid than eagles his coursers they came, And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name: "Now, Coastal! now, Legend! now Kjun and Remkin! On, Slapshot! on, Manwolf! on, TopShelf, LakeLivin! To the back of the lot by the old grassy wall Now drink away! drink away! drink away all!" As leaves that before the wild hurricane fly, So do beer cans drank by Hag and the Big Guy. And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the tarmac The walking approach of a man with a sack. From the smile on his face and the silvery hair, I knew St Francis was finally there. A bundle of pucks he had flung on his back, And he looked like a pedler just opening his pack. Check this out guys, we got all these pucks, From the Murphy trade, oh what big luck. But we shouldn't be bitter its not nearly as lame As what happened with He Who Shall Not Be Named. Things are gonna look up, I'm as smart as a fox, I'll bring us to glory, or my name's not Fort Knox. If push comes to shove, BD58's got our backs, He'll help buy us a center with his fat stacks. And laying his finger aside of his nose, And giving a nod, to the PNC he rose; But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight “Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good night!"

This game has probable taken on more importance than I would of thought a few weeks ago. Heading into the All Star game and bye week in a playoff spot takes on its own importance if only as a confidence building victory. On a moderating note we have had some complaints about the increasing use of innuendo on the board. Keeping in mind that the intention of the board is a place to be inclusive of all members I ask that you think before you post. The word filter is intended to help moderators catch words that might slip through and not a replacement for the actual word that might be offensive. Replacing a word with *edit* while leaving the meaning unchanged is circumventing the intent of the rules. Robust debate over views is welcome but attacks on each others views are not welcome Please help make this board an enjoyable experience for all. After all we are all hockey fans. OBXer

One of my observations about all of this is the crocodile tears cried for Francis by all his "buddies" throughout the league. Aren't we all a great hockey community protecting our own against the outsiders? It seems to me that 2 cold hard truths are hitting many of the "traditional" league guys. 1. PK isn't here anymore, therefore his skinflint low-budget crap is no longer a guarantee 2. GMRF is now gone, so Ronnie No-Trade is no longer the non-threat that he was when trying to compete for players. I think the league liked the Carolina Hurricanes just the way they were. Cheap, easy to read, and destined for 9th every season. And they'll do whatever to throw a monkey wrench into the new works under the guise of propriety.

Oh, the head-scratching and prediction analysis. Isn't this great??? I've been following the squad since '02. Don't post much but do enjoy most of the banter. What makes this great is that the Canes are once again relevant. The Committee is pushing buttons and pulling levers to do what they deem best. I can't remember an off-season where I've actually checked the 'net multiple times a day just to see if anything has happened regarding the team. Looking forward to my appointment time tomorrow when I can log on and select my paltry 11-game plan dates. Due to some monetary issues I actually considered cancelling my plan but am going to keep it. Wouldn't it be great if Remkin's island could be named the 8th continent over the next few seasons???!! Carry on folks. Thanks for the insight and the fun.

I'm really interested to see how this goes down. Ron Francis got canned primarily because he was too tentative or reluctant to give up assets to improve the team at last year's deadline. You could argue that wasn't the case but it's what I took away from his demotion and the little info we were privy to. Will TD and the committee do the same thing (i.e. sit on their hands) when it is obvious to every devout Canes fan we can't finish our scoring chances and desperately need some help? Necas and Svech are going to be good players at some point, but they aren't helping now. I want to make the playoffs. I'm desperate to make the playoffs. Is the committee?

1-3-0 5-0-0 Blue Jackets @ Hurricanes PNC Arena Saturday Oct 12th 7:00 PM Watch: FS-CR FS-O + Listen: 99.9 The Fan Keep on strutin 5-0-0 as the Canes keep adding onto franchise history for best start they come away with a sound win with the loss of the Marty Party for 2 months, whose doing well according to a recent tweet. Onto Columbus whose roster was decimated by poor contract decisions. However they are a group of 20 players who have made the NHL and are fully capable of stopping the Canes from adding onto the franchise record. Korpisalo played tonight which would typically put Merzlikins in goal who hails from the same town as beloved former goalie Arturs Irbe. He's been playing in the Swiss-A league and his debut was less then stellar. Reimer will likely get the start and while Petr is doing decent if Reimer puts together a few more good games Petr's job might disappear from him. Kind of amazing how doing decent is no longer good enough around here. If I absolutely had to find something to hit on it would be nice to get Aho going, still mostly void of the stat sheet but that sort of lull after a big contract does happen and the boys are picking up for him. At some point they'll need him to pick up when someone goes into a lull themselves hopefully this issue irons itself out.

It may not be official yet but it's all but done. Just waiting in order to screw with the Habs by tying up their resources until the last minute. Canes have made the announcement that they'll match and are really playing up Aho on their media sites. Dundon: "I'm not angry. I'm just surprised that any team thought this had any chance of working. I guess the Carolina Hurricanes are still misunderstood if anyone anywhere thought this would be hard for us. I'm not upset with Sebastian, I am actually relieved to have this done. We all understand the players should do what they can to get their best contract. But this was never going to work for Montreal."

This times 100000000000. It is a fan board, so I do not fault anyone for taking it personally. We are fans, that is what we do. However.... - Aho's agent is doing his client good by getting him a lot of money. That is what agents do - It is likely CAR was trying to get Aho for 8 years, Aho wanted 5. His agent found a way to make that happen. - The money is less than I was expecting from a offer sheet (I thought they would come in at 10+) - We now do not have to have protracted negotiations potentially causing other hard feelings (think Nylander). The offer is the offer, we either accept or not. - Dundon has plenty of money to pay the front-loaded contract, so no issue there. - Waddell can sit on his hands for 6 days and do nothing while all of the other free agents are snapped up. If we match, they miss out on most of the good FAs - And we could retaliate with a offer sheet poison pill to them, when they have a RFA worth offer sheeting... I am not concerned. It is a business and Aho's agent is doing right by his client. I expect nothing less. Now all that said, if we do not match the offer, then we can start freaking out and hurling insults. They will be deserved.

This is encouraging Canes’ Ferland can’t ignore persistent trade speculation as deadline approaches By Chip Alexander Read more here: https://www.newsobserver.com/sports/article226287575.html#storylink=cpy

I know I should quote you (sorry guys) but your constant hammering of Faulk and McGinn make me wonder if you even watch the games. McGinn is over slotted but the type of guy every team has on their 4th borderline 3rd lines, we already have him why create a hole? And Faulk had a bad year last year I went argue that but has bailed out both Mrazek and Mac on many occasions this year and doing so has won at least 3 games on his own on top of being a very solid defender. I dont know what changed for him maybe he isnt suited to Peters D style maybe he didnt get along with him idk, but he has been stellar on D this year, and if you think otherwise you just dont know what you are watching

I'd move Pesce in a heartbeat, we have Adam Fox to take that spot. And if you haven't kept up with this kid, Tim Gleason has been traveling to Harvard to attend his games and is evidently been mentoring him as well. For those with a subscription to The Athletic, Sara Civian has a great article up on Fox. A few tidbits - I always knew he was good. He always knew he was good. The Carolina Hurricanes, who are confident they can get their unsigned trade acquisition under contract, always knew he was good. You’re completely mistaken if you think he was an afterthought in the trade of the summer. ........... Will he be making those plays for the Hurricanes? As an unsigned prospect, he’s aware of the speculation surrounding his future. He’s quick to shut it down. “I know people think I have some plan to sign with the Rangers because of where I grew up,” the New York native said. “But my dream, my goal, is to play in the NHL. As soon as possible.” To drive that point home, here’s what we know: • The Hurricanes are very confident they will sign him, and I’ve heard that was actually a bigger piece of the trade than people might’ve thought. • If he signs with the Hurricanes he can play immediately, but if he wanted to sign elsewhere he’d have to stay at Harvard for another year and enter free agency. • ^”My goal is to play in the NHL as soon as possible.” • It would be straight up rude to the rest of the NCAA if he were to stay at Harvard terrorizing the rest of the league for another season. • If we want to Galaxy Brain this, Fox seems to really appreciate Gleason and his visits. Knowing a team is willing to invest in you and go that extra mile matters. • If the Hurricanes can assure him there’s a spot for him when he’s NHL-ready (so, like, yesterday) this shouldn’t be an issue.

Darling for Reimer, literally tuning poo into gold. Reimers confidence is through the roof right now, he's playing deep in his crease relying on his hand eye coordination and less of being a rigid pray the puck hits you goalie. He's reading shots like a world renowned scholar reading a children's book. Specifically their was an ear hole shot from the slot that I'm thinking of and the glove was already up at his ear hole waiting for the puck. To get that glove where it needed to be that close in he read the player whole way. Crazy.

In a "MILD" State of Hockey... Vs Xcel Energy Center Minneapolis, MN So the Canes (11-7-1) kicked off a three-game road trip in Buffalo on Friday night that provided as much drama as any hockey fan could want/stomach/tolerate in narrowly escaping with a 5-4 OT win. Now the Raleigh skaters are in the "state of hockey" to face the Minnesota Wild (7-11-1) in a Saturday afternoon matinee. A once promising Wild team has declined in recent years, but like their Eastern Conference equivalent (Buffalo Sabres), they can still scare the crap outta ya. This is a(nother) team Carolina will not want to take lightly, as they should have learned during a recent four-game debacle vs "lesser" teams. Now that Carolina has some momentum back, the opportunity presents itself for a solid two points. Also, the Canes get good news on the return of Jordan Martinook to restore some much-needed grit. Minny beat the Yotes 3-2 Thursday night. Carolina took both meetings last season. The Canes nipped the Wild in Minneapolis in OT 5-4 on October 13, 2018. They also won the game in Raleigh on March 23, 2019 in less dramatic fashion by a 5-1 tally. I'm going full Terminator mode during this road trip ... Hope our guys will leave the Twin Cities with a "W" ... Hasta La Vista, Baby 😎

The BOJ moved up to 66.2% chance of making the playoffs in SportsClubStats by sitting on their hands yesterday. Montreal has one more point but fell behind them at 63.6%. Another look at the 10 game trends, Hagmetrics style: Hagmetric Standings Overall Trend Metropolitan Islanders +18 +4 Washington +12 +1 Columbus +12 0 Atlantic Tampa Bay +33 +6 Boston +17 +7 Boston +17 +5 Wildcard Pittsburgh +10 +1 Montreal +10 0 Out BOJ +9 +6 Buffalo +5 -1 Philadelphia +4 +7 Hottest team Florida +1 +2 Rangers 0 -1 New Jersey -5 -1 Detroit -6 +1 Ottawa -9 -4 While Philly may be a concern, they have actually only picked up 1 point on the BOJ over the last 10 games at +7 trend vs +6. Candidates to pass are numerous, CLB trending at 0, Montreal at 0 and Pens at +1. These teams lost 6, 6 and 5 points to the BOJ over the last 10 games respectively. While Philly may catch up, there is plenty of room for 2 hot teams.

Just to expand. Nino is having an outlier bad year, Rask is having a continutation of 1.5 years. Even with bad years this year: Nino 16 goal, 40 point pace over 82 Rask: 3 goal, 16 pont projected pace over 82 Nino has essentially put up 20 the past 4 years, and two years ago, 25 goals/57 points. Nino is last on the team in plus/minus this year, but has been plus every year in the past. I don't know if something has materially changed due to injury or something, but if not, a change of scenery could yield a 20 goal 50 point, plus player for a guy we would have had to dump for nothing. If he is not fighting an injury, it's hard to see how we didn't make out like bandits on this. While it's not THE move, on this move itself: I give the committee an A.

The message is clear, but we can't ship off too many more stars for jack squat for the sake of change. 110 easily guaranteed points a season (I feel I'm lowballing) have been dealt in the past 3 years, one of those deals has netted 0 NHL players, this deal might yield 2 (Pu and the 2nd) but if maybes and buts were berries and nuts we'd all have a Merry Christmas or some such stupid saying. At some point we've gotta be the team adding a player for a steal.

I may be odd man out but once we make a trade I don't care if the player we traded becomes a superstar down the road. The only thing I care about is if we got better. For us this trade made us positionally better in the now. It has opened up other trade options for us. As for Fox he was the embellishment to make the trade work for us. Recognizing we were giving up a player with future potential. If this Harvard bound kid signs with us now, later or never I contend the risk/reward was worth the chance. It was Hamilton we wanted and it was Hamilton we got. Lindy forced his trade and we got Ferland, call it a draw if you wish. We did OK, IMO.

BP was a class act from Day One to the end. He helped Jeff Skinner find his defensive game, which enabled him to have his two best seasons; helped Lindholm find the slot; stayed out of Jordan's way; connected Aho and TT; and along with Smith, coached the D into a core that should be solid for years. He left this team in a far better place than it was in when he found it, and will be successful wherever he ends up. Thanks BP, and happy trails out west--or wherever the path leads next.

I keep reminding myself that it doesn't matter if you lose 8-1 or 1-0. In the end they both count for nothing in the standings. Somehow that doesn't bring me any solace. Sometimes this team is good, I won't say very good but good enough. At other times this team doesn't belong on NHL ice. Yesterday was one of those times. It wasn't that they lost but how they lost. The were dominated and it was difficult to find any redeeming quality in their play. Most of us know we are a player or two or three away from icing a really good team. Most of us know we could be a year or two away from the team maturing. Many of us suspect we will see organizational changes if only in philosophy before we take the next step. But most of us thought we would at least take another step in the rebuild this year. I'm having trouble seeing that. I'm just talking out loud. I wish I knew the answers. It is tough to be a Canes fan these days.
