  1. I thought top-shelf had a chance with his prediction last night.  After the handshakes, the boys seemed to gather in a loose circle at the blue line and chat for a bit before they finally lined up and did the stick bows.  In the previous home playoff wins, they pretty much lined up and did the stick bows right away, so when they gathered for a bit longer yesterday it made me wonder for a sec if something more dramatic was in the works...

  2. I didn't notice this after Game 3, but may have missed it, after Game 4, after the Star of the Game Interview, they played a skol clap celebration video on the JumboTron as fans filed out.  Some fans did join in the clap as they were leaving.

Agreed, but i wish we had signed them for another year, considering all we got in exchange for him was a year's supply of Rice-a-roni.

Don’t forget, we got Buffalo’s second round pick this year, with their bad record, is fifth overall (and 2 more picks in 2020).  Canes scouting and drafting has improved, so that Rice-a-Roni may become a decent Prize Showcase yet...

...all the money goes to the Kids and Communities Foundation that the Canes support.

Just a note that the Cane’s charitable group is now simply called “Carolina Hurricanes Foundation” instead of the Kids ‘n Communities  Foundation.  I guess the name change happened this season, I didn’t realize it myself until we made a donation at a recent Cool Bars event.

The Canes, with the great job their social media team has done this season, should have done a delayed April Fool’s joke and announced we’ll be playing in the Whalers jerseys!  Can you imagine the shock, outrage and press coverage at that announcement!!! 🐳🐳🐳💚😂🤣

So wait a second ,  Are the Canes allowed to wear their alternates  in the playoffs ?  I just got done watching the hurricanes promo video for the playoffs  announcing they will be .   I thought  no teams were allowed to do so .

I think its a “pick and stick” rule.  Whatever jersey the team decides to wear, they have to do it for the duration of the playoffs.

Columbus @ Buffalo  Will CBJ shoot itself in the foot. One can only hope.

Jeff Skinner was at one point, I believe, a +23 this season.  He now sits at -3 (with 37 goals!).  It would be nice if the Buffalo tanking can wait for another game and Skinner evens up his +/- today...

This is really ******* me off. You feel good about a win, then all it means is that you live another day.

The Canes finally put together a good season, and it is likely one of the most lopsided East vs. Western conference point differentials in history.

    It’s maddening. It’s BS.

If we miss the playoffs,**** is going to be broken.

I’m with ya Kyrule.  It is frustrating after this incredible run to consistently get so little scoreboard help night-after-night.

  9. Love them or not, they are now clearly part of Cane’s lore, the Storm Surge celebrations! Yesterday’s March Madness celly was one of ESPN SportsCenter Top 10 plays this morning. If the stars align, the Canes will need about a dozen or so celebrations to get them through the rest of the regular season and post season. This thread is a suggestion box for ideas for future surges (and the surge in general). Board bragging rights go to those that accurately predict a future surge!

  10. Nice interview with Coach Rod on NHL Now on NHL Network today, it covered a wide range of stuff about the storm surges, the team streak, how he got into coaching, his fitness, everything.  He was asked about Aho and one thing he said caught my ear.  Rod said, “Aho hates to lose, just hates it.”  I remember hearing Phil Esposito on XM for years saying the best players are those that “hate to lose...everybody loves to win, those guys are easy, I want guys that hate to lose.”  Lots of times during the Eric Staal era, I thought we had leadership and players that loved to win, but didn’t really hate to lose...they sort of accepted it.  #culturechange

Crazy looking at the standings that a 2 game losing streak by us and a 2 game winning streak by Mont. and PItts. would drop us 3 points out of a WC spot.  Yikes.

And WTH Tampa Bay?  50-12?  Good god that is one heck of a record.  Wow

The same is true for the Isles and Caps. a 2 game losing streak by them and 2 game winning streak by us and we are in 1st.  I prefer to look at the teams in front of us and not the ones in the rear view mirror. But your point is well made.

As hot as the team has been, losing a couple or three could make it all go poof.  What a race this is shaping up to be.

    Crazy stat:

Pesce is +26 so far and a +32 turn around from last year. This isn’t the biggest turnaround though.

Faulk is +10. A +36 turn around.  Yep he was -26 last year.

And the biggest turnaround of all...the whole team is better by 48!  The Canes goal differential last season was a sad -28 and they’re a plus 20 at the moment this year.

Anyone else going to the alumni game today?

Me and Mrs. Storm are a maybe.  She mentioned that John Forslund is not announcing the game this year (I guess he’s calling the NBC game today?) and wondered who would call the action.  I said maybe they’ll bring back Chuck Kaiton to do it since he’s an alumni!  (Actually, that would be really cool if they did.)

I think they actually won the Olympics. I have been to the Olympic Center in Lake Placid twice for figure skating competitions. There is a huge mural that covers all 4 entrance doors into the rink that shows the scene at the end of the game with the Soviets. All the Americans were celebrating like crazy. The Soviet players all were hanging their heads, no doubt wondering what part of Siberia they were headed to. The stunning thing is that the US team consisted of college players - true amateurs. The Soviet team was the Red Army team that lived and trained together in Moscow 50 weeks a year. But it was a one off. The two teams played an exhibition before the Olympics, I think in MSG, and the Soviets won something like 8-1. I saw a documentary on the game - I think on an ESPN 30 for 30. The Russian Hockey Federation replaced the longtime coach of the team in the year before the Olympics. The Russian players were very loyal to him and not fond of his replacement. The Soviets had the best goalie in the world. Just before the end of the first period, he let in a soft goal, and the coach pulled him for their backup. They interviewed team members 30 years later who felt without the goalie change they would still have won. Still one of the great sports stories of all time, but if you ever get to see the documentary about it there are a lot of interesting back stories and subplots.

Yes, that 30 for 30 documentary focused on the ‘miracle’ game from the Soviet perspective, if it’s the one I’m thinking of, which was very interesting.  I also like the film “Miracle” and Kurt Russell’s portrayal of Herb Brooks.  Good featurette on the DVD of Kurt getting some pointers from Herb on his coaching methods and what he was thinking at the time that I think aided Kurt in his acting role.  Shame Herb was killed before the film debuted.

Well I said I would open the island when the hurricanes were in a playoff spot with magic beans accounted for....For those newbies on here this is basically an expression of unbridled optimism for the future for this season for this team.

My first real thought of the island in a looong time was when I got the Canes email the other day about Season Ticket renewal and playoff tickets and was like, “You know, I may actually need to budget for playoff tickets this year...”

If I was smart, each year I should have been putting my annual playoff ticket money into a saver account until it was needed.  If I had, I could afford a damn deluxe suite for all of us if they made it this year... 😄

Well, Ottawa did us no favors tonight (insert “duh” here), getting shut out for the second night in a row...back to the outside looking in on the playoffs

Whew boy, Ottawa is a bad looking hockey team in what I saw last night.  Columbus must have been playing down to their competition because they didn’t look great for the 2 periods I saw.  Slow motion hockey, looked like an alumni game.

While I’m no rocket surgeon, dropping $250M on a startup football league when the Canes are spending at the bottom of the pile is...disturbing to a Canes fan.  Startup football leagues are historical losers.

Maybe but with the way the nfl is going who knows

Unlike some of those other football leagues, the AAF has no desire to compete head-on with the NFL.  It’s clear intention is to become a developmental league for the NFL.  If the league can survive for a couple season where the NFL signs some sort of agreement with them, it will go a long way toward making the AAF to the NFL like the AHL is to the NHL...and, potentially, a good investment.

I actually watched bits and pieces of a few of the AAF games, the quality of the play wasn’t bad and the TV production values were very good.  I like some of the rule changes too.  One rule change I’d like to see in the NHL is the AAF has a “Sky Judge” that serves a couple of functions, one is as the replay official—the big difference is the TV viewer actually gets to listen in on the conversations as the replay is being viewed and decided upon.  I would love to listen in on what the NHL officials and Toronto are talking about when it comes to goalie interference challenges, for example.
