  1. ah...the 100th improbable trade from you...i think i've seen you post on hfboards before as "sicknastycullen8." that would make sense as whenever that hf-poster makes a trade proposal it's immediately shot down and laughed at...
  2. How long have you been a Canes' fan? When have you ever seen us spend that close to the cap? Getting a "replacement easily" as you suggest is rediculous. We are a small market team. We don't make blockbuster deals. We don't go after the high-end UFAs every July 1st. JR always looks for the diamond in the rough or is somehow miraculously able to sign guys to more than reasonbable deals(Williams, Pitkanen, Eaves, etc.). None of those guys listed would fit into our budget next yr as most of them will command top $$$. You really must not understand that the team is also a business, and most years the business side of our team ends up in the red. You're suggesting we would be able to sign both Staal and Gaborik? You have no conception of how JR operates. Williams for Gaborik is no risk!?! My Lord, do you watch hockey? A 30goal forward w/ top-notch two-way skills on an awesome contract for an oft-injured flashy Euro whose gone after next season? Sure, I'd love to see Gaborik on the team. I'd maybe even entertain the option of trading Willy for him, but I'd want him signed to a contract first. And, as has already been stated, Gaborik will command 7-8mil, the only player on our team that will get that kind of dough is Staal. No way in Hades, JR has 2 guys making that amount...
  3. If Cole doesn't work out in Edmonton, why on Earth would we trade for him when we could sign him as an UFA for nothing next offseason? Also, if we traded for him in mid-season, he'd still be more expensive than Eaves/Ruutu + Seidenberg combined. Seriously, your trade proposals are always nice for a laugh...
  4. Justin Williams, F. Kaberle, prospect Jamie Mcbain and a 1st round draft pick...Holy Overpayment Batman!!! We give up our top RW signed very reasonably for 3 more yrs and 2 prospects(who would be top prospects for us considering Mcbain's probably only a yr or two away, and an 09 first rounder) for 1 yr of Gaborik!?! Absolutely no way we re-sign both Staal and Gaborik after this season, and after that we're out 2 prospects. Kabs would just be throw-in, salary dump on our end, but we would still be taking on more w/ Gaborik's salary. The only feasible way this works is if JR knows Gaborik will walk at season's end, and by clearing that salary he's able to afford what Staal will ask for. Then I guess it would be bring in the kiddies...Bowman, Boychuk and such...I don't see it happening at all, unless JR really wants to put it all on the line this yr for the Cup, and plans on having a youth movement afterwards...
  5. I think we may be in trouble if not one of Samsonov, Ruutu or Eaves doesn't break 20. But on the other hand, is there another team in the league where every forward on the top 3 lines has broken 20 at one point in their career? Hopefully, we see the Staal that carried the team last season next season. If that's the case, 40 goals should not be a problem for him at all. After Staal, we should have one of the most balanced set of goal scorers in the NHL. The yr we won the cup we had six 20 goal scorers(Staal, Williams, Cole, Brindy, Stillman, Cullen). We had seven if you count Recchi, but he didn't score 20 of those w/ the canes. Anyway, I don't see any reason why we can't repeat six or seven 20 goal guys. Having Pitkanen and Corvo on that 1st PP unit is getting me really excited about our PP next yr...
  6. I'd say our season hopes hinge on how the newly assembled D-men play together...
  7. You really have been under a rock. Did you not notice how much better the team played after Corvo was added? He's been a consistent threat for 40pts for the past 3yrs and is signed for this upcoming yr and next. You're clueless if you think we got ripped off in that deal. Eaves has already accomplished more at his age than Cole did at the same age(20goal season) and is signed for the next 3yrs on a very reasonable contract. Even if he never reaches 20goals again, he'll be a solid 3rd liner at a good price. Corvo makes approx 2.7 mil and Eaves makes 1.1 mil this yr. These TWO players' combined salary for 2008-09 total just a bit more than Mike Commodore is making next yr. You are the one not looking so smart if you think that the team is not better after trading Commodore and Stillman...
  8. seriously...take off the hurricanes'-colored glasses. this is a FANTASTIC deal. look at what guys like redden and rozsival got paid. even mark streit is making more in his first yr than pitkanen. we have never had a guy w/ the potential to really be #1 d-man. this guy has all the tools in the world. no way in he-double-hockey-sticks that cole would have re-signed here next yr for the same amt. i'm EXTREMELY pleased w/ jr's moves...
  9. Do you not understand simple math? Walker makes 2.5mil, Whitney 3.5mil, Kaberle 2.2mil. All are signed at least through this yr and next. Bieksa makes 3.75 mil for 2 or 3 more yrs. Why would ANY team take on over 8mil in salary for the next two yrs while giving up a young top4 defenseman? Not to mention one of your proposed players has a NTC. This is a business;GM's don't use NHL08 like it's evident you do...
  10. Do you just consult your Xbox every time you make a trade proposal?
  11. to all of those wishing whitney to be traded-why and how? he has a no-trade clause and has given no indication he'd waive it. he's getting up there in yrs as well but is still effective for our team. i would argue he's more valuable than cole. he's dynamite on the powerplay and will probably average 60+ pts for the duration of his contract. cole on the other hand has only cracked 60 pts once, for the past 2 yrs has taken stretches off, and is in the last yr of his contract. the 4mil we're paying him is better used for the d. he's also been somewhat reluctant to sign on the dotted line in the past. at the end of next yr when staal's and cole's contracts are up, who do you think is going to get paid? we simply can't afford to pay cole 4mil a season for 70gms or so and 50-60pts. he's a great player, fan favorite -yes, but this is a business, the d has to get better. as far as suter for kaberle, whitney and hamilton?-if whitney would waive his ntc and nashville accepted that trade, i'd do a happy dance. that ain't gonna happen though. hamilton could have been had pretty much for free last yr. we're gonna have to sucker someone into taking kaberle, or accept a salary dump to get rid of him. whitney, as i said before, probably is not very attractive to other teams w/ a contract that pays him 3.5mil for the next 2 yrs as well. if jr is going to make a forward for d trade, it's going to have to be one of our younger guys-cole, williams, ruutu, or eaves. of course staal is a keeper, brindy is getting up there in yrs and jr is loyal. we all know what happened when cullen wasn't here. samsonov was just re-signed. larose is rfa. sutter is probably being groomed as brindy's replacement. jr has coveted eaves for a while so i personally think he is safe. he'll be signed for cheap too. ruutu will probably be a little harder to sign, but i don't see him being traded after ladd was given up for him and how quickly the fans took to him. williams is signed to a great contract, but is coming off a 2nd knee surgery. i think williams could fetch us a suter-type d-man, but are we willing to let him go? if nashville wants cole for suter, i think we would have to add more to the pot. maybe a conditional pick or something. teams are not going to let a young stud d-man go for a player w/ just one yr left on his contract. jr has a lot to do this offseason...
  12. i'd hate to see anyone go as well. the current team just has a way of making you care about everyone as they're finally a TEAM and playing for each other. unfortunately, there's also the business side of things, if we can trade cole's 4 million salary for a young defenseman w/ a 2 to 2.5 million salary, there's that much more cash to sign samsonov, lock up ruutu or gleason for longer at maybe a little more money. you also have to think that when both staal's and cole's contracts are up, there just doesn't seem to be enough money for both. signing staal long term is a no brainer; losing cole to free agency for nothing would be horrible. acquiring a young defenseman that would help out for yrs to come would be a smart move in my opinion, but it would be a very tough pill to swallow to have for cole to have to be the one to go...
  13. long-time lurker here... this is a topic i've been thinking about for quite a long time. i agree that jr would not have traded for ruutu and eaves for just one season. i feel pretty confident both will be signed to contracts this summer. i think everyone would agree the defense must be addressed. i also agree that what williams brings to the table(two-way versatility at a) bargain price is more valuable to the team than what cole brings(streaky scoring, but when he's on his game he can be our best player). also, cole being ufa at the end of next yr, i think makes him easier to move in jr's eyes. a trade seems like the most likely way to acquire the defenesman we need. so, our assets lie in the ranks of the "top 9" forwards. imo-untouchable-staal(duh), cullen, brindamour, ruutu(based on comments from jr, and what we gave up) no trade clauses-walker whitney ufa-samsonov(probably will be re-signed based off of comments in recent articles) rfa-eaves-probably kept and easily re-signed to a modest contract this leaves cole and williams. i hate to give up either one, cole does seem to be easier to let go b/c of his ufa status. if we do go the trade route to upgrade our d, which i think should be our #1 priority going into the offseason. gleason is developing into our top-pairing d that jr knew was in him. corvo is a godsend. wesley, hopefully can play one more yr on the third pairing. hedican hopefully gracefully retires. wallin/kaberle i'm kinda "meh" about. i'd love to see one of them moved(kaberle is really the only option here as wallin will not waive his ntc). seidenberg, i would re-sign to replace kaberle(if some team desparate for d takes a chance...please god). borer will be here i think based on the need for d and he's still on his rookie contract. so that leaves us w/ gleason, corvo, wesely, borer, seidenberg, wallin, possibly tanabe...we would pretty much have the same d as this yr, which at times has been a real problem. how much better would our d look w/ just one more bona-fide top-four d-man in the mix? my dream scenario-cole to nashville for hamhuis(signed for 2 more yrs i think to a very reasonable contract), but i think williams would be the more attractive piece. the question becomes...would you be willing to move one of these 2 very good forwards to address our need on d? the more likely scenario-we bring in a ward on the cheap... sorry for the length of my first post... thoughts!?!?
