  1. Canes end up paying around $3.8 million to buy out the remainder of the contract. Players that sign a contract when they're 35 or older can still be bought out, you just don't get to spread out the cap hit over a longer period of time (as you can when the contract was signed before age 35). So instead of a roughly $3 million hit both this year and next year, the Canes have to assume the full amount this season (hence, "no relief" from a Canes perspective).
  2. They know the cap is going up significantly in the next 4-5 years (Seattle expansion is one big reason), so instead of locking themselves into a certain amount (say $9 mil) in the last 2-3 years, they're banking on being able to get a much higher AAV when a 5-year deal is up. Canadian media likes to play this up in Aho's case as "he wants out and wants to go to MTL", but like you said, other big-name RFA's are trying to do the same thing (most notably Marner right now). Funny how it's just a normal contract negotiation when a player does that up there.
  3. Especially since reports are that we're buying him out so he likely still returns to SJ... We essentially bought a first rounder from them. Not exactly a "help us now" type of move.
  4. Talk about a guy who knows he's probably gone if this goes south, so it's not like he'll be around to clean up the mess.
  5. Probably just calling him back up now that they're out of their break. Was only sent down to keep him playing in Charlotte during the bye week.
  6. Can't take too much credit. Living in the Des Moines area these days, so I've been able to follow them as a partial STH. Wild have fallen back a bit lately, but for awhile at the beginning of the year it was them and the Checkers at #1 and #2 in the league. Still my dream Calder Cup matchup since they don't play each other in the regular season.
  7. Murphy was a solid veteran presence in Iowa, but they've got an abundance of RD (to the point where he play on the left last game). Makes sense for them to swap a RD for LD, but can't honestly say that I expect much to change for either team after this one.
  8. Maybe just as importantly, making up 7 points would also put them at 2nd in the Metro. Not saying they will, but with the Pens, Caps and Bruins all sitting at 50 games/60 points, that gives the Canes more targets they can catch if a team above them falters. Edit: Gaining 6 points ties them with any of those teams, 7 puts them ahead. Too early to worry about tiebreakers just yet.
  9. Main takeaway for me is how much cushion they keep adding for teams already near the cap. We keep talking about how teams are going to face a cap crunch X years from now, but stuff like this keeps providing relief.
  10. The injuries to Fleury and Pesce probably didn't help. Right when Pesce's name was in the rumor mill, he's hurt. Hard to trade away your depth at the exact moment you need it to field a lineup. That being said, Nylander seems to have always been a long shot, so hopefully they're talking about someone else from other teams if/when the Nylander saga doesn't break our way.
  11. Pretty sure he only went down on a conditioning stint, so we had to call him back up by a certain point regardless. Seems they tried to sneak him back through and it didn't work.
  12. Zykov claimed by the Oilers. Darling clears.
  13. I'll be honest, I don't care how elaborate they make the celebration because it means they won. Winning is good. Too many variations of celebrating is a good problem to have.
  14. And yet most (if not all) of them have done so in the playoffs as well as during the last year's regular season on numerous occasions. Some of those teams haven't even played 4 games yet, so stating their goalie hasn't made 4 straight starts as if it's some sort of measuring stick of their value/talent is an incredibly worthless argument.
  15. Columbus prospects taking plenty of liberties so far, really physical early... Canes scored but refs didn't catch it, so another tough break. EDIT: They somehow went back and corrected it without the benefit of replay. Really bizarre chain of events, but it ties the game so I'll take it.
  16. No worries, seems Petey Pablo won.
  17. As bad as Buffalo has been lately, there was essentially ZERO chance they would be trading a potential lottery pick. Not thrilled with the return either, but I had no illusions the Canes were going to get a 1st from any team that wasn't already a proven contender.
  18. My gut tells me this is an indication Jeff had no intention of entertaining an extension, here or elsewhere, and he's fully intent on testing the UFA waters next summer. That'd make him a pure one-year rental. Still worth at least a little something, but far from full value. Better to get something than nothing I suppose (see Isles/Tavares), but hard not to be disappointed with the return. Puts more pressure on trading Faulk for at least a pseudo-replacement.
  19. This is what I keep coming back to. Certainly not feeling super confident about our tandem, but I'm not sure bringing in any of the other guys out there would've gotten me to that point. Grubauer was the only one I could've felt comfortable with, but Washington had no interest in trading him within the division.
  20. I'd have to dig through Twitter to find it again, but yeah, we offered the same deal Colorado did (2nd for Grubauer + Orpik) with a better 2nd round pick. Washington turned that down.
  21. Tavares to Toronto appears to be done.
  22. In non-Canes news, Tavares has informed the Islanders that he's not coming back....
  23. I think the committee looked at the options available and didn't really like what they saw. The goalies getting paid this time around aren't a whole lot different than Darling was last summer, so that still would've been rolling the dice on a guy hoping to take the next step. Might as well find a stopgap for this year and see what's available next summer.
  24. Only applies if he wants that extra year with the Islanders.
