  1. As a team, who stayed fit during the break? Who was able to get in some ice time somehow, someway? Who can gel quickly? Who can get lucky? If the Canes did/can do those things, they have a shot at going deep. I wouldn’t be surprised to see some eighth or ninth seed in the final. Fluke year calls for fluke results.
  2. I understand where you’re coming from. My father is in his late 80s. Born near the beginning of the Great Depression and seeing his two older brothers go off to war only to die in the Pacific, my father didn’t really experience any sense of normalcy until his mid-teens as he was pondering the inevitability of preparing for military service himself. Fortunately, the war ended in time. He knows how bad it can get because he’s lived it. Younger generations have rarely experienced such wider social calamities. There are a lot of skills that his generation had to hone that younger generations haven’t a clue about. Chicken magically appears on the store shelves plucked, processed, and sometimes even cooked. When talking to my own teens about Zoomers and Millennials, I half-jokingly shake my head and say, “We’ll never colonize Mars.”
  3. Whew! I just got my coronavirus test results back. Needless to say, I’m quite relieved.
  4. This morning, I saw a middle-aged woman in the grocery store telling each passing shopper to stay six feet away from her because she had a compromised immune system. She starting yelling that everyone else was a bunch of sheep. Apparently, it must have been her store and hers alone.
  5. Most of us are aware of that. Regardless, recent modeling by a large team of researchers at Imperial College suggest that the Covid-19 pandemic could go on much longer than the April or May peak that the more optimistic models show. As social distancing and other measures are relaxed, it’s possible that a second wave worse than the first could emerge in the fall. According to the researchers, we might find ourselves in a cycle of waves for the next 18 months or until a vaccine is released widely. At this point, aliens could attack us overnight and I’m not sure I’d bat an eye.
  6. Me, too. I’m in the middle of a book on the Black Plague—apropos reading I suppose—and when you consider how long that and the Spanish Flu took to burn out, I have this fear about how far into the future this all plays out. Ugh.
  7. I need to check my card activity, too. Doing our duty to help the Canes’ cash flow I suppose. I think the 2019-20 season—including the playoffs—will be scratched entirely. I don’t see much movement on that front until mid-May at the earliest and by that point, they’re thinking about the 2020-21 season. We can just chalk this up to a once-in-a-generation event that will be talked about in history books. In the meantime, I hope everyone stays well and prosperous while we wait this out. That said, I’m hungry right now, but I don’t want to start into my supply of Vienna sausages yet. 🤣
  8. Admittedly, I’ve long been a bit cynical when it comes to how I perceive the intelligence of many of my fellow Americans, but—holy 💩—this pandemic has brought out the loons. The lack of any critical thinking skills within the general population is astonishing. My wife strives to see the best in people and encourages me to do the same, but it’s been difficult lately. And do we really need those local news stories where a 28-year-old reporter interviews a therapist to discuss the psychology of why people are buying hand sanitizer? It’s comes across as condescending.
  9. Personally, I don’t expect another NHL puck to be dropped in an official game until October 2020.
  10. I’m okay with the league moving the playoffs online to NHL 20 with the caveat that Snoop Dogg isn’t allowed to call the second period action. I like our virtual chances with our young Finns.
  11. Look. This really sucks. I don’t like the temporary changes we’re going to face in the coming months. I’ve ordered my playoff tickets already and was optimistic that the Canes could make a good run. I, too, was skeptical at first, but don’t delude yourself into think that “it’s just a bad cold” like we’ve heard others say. Covid-19 is at least ten times more deadly than seasonal flu (according to conservative estimates) and far more infectious. Go read reputable sources like Dr. Marc Lipsitch or Dr. Scott Gottlieb. This new virus is nothing to mess with. Viruses like this are graded by how lethal they are and how easily they spread. On one end of the spectrum is measles: it spreads like wildfire, but it’s not terribly deadly. On the other end is rabies: it’s not that easy to contract, but if you get it, you’re screwed by the time the symptoms show up. Covid-19 is in that sweet spot in the middle. Even if it doesn’t knock you for a loop, you become a carrier. The more carriers we have, the wider this thing spreads and the more people die. If we’re willing to go through some short-term inconvenience now, we minimize the risk of overloading our hospital capacity.
  12. I’m inclined to think that the NHL will suspend the season indefinitely starting today. If the hiatus lasts more than a month, this’ll end up being an incomplete season with an asterisk in the books. I’m going to be really bored several nights each week. 😥
