  1. I agree, been pretty happy with Liles despite a bad play that led to one of the first goals last night. Is Gleason playing much for Toronto?
  2. That would make sense if Semin has a nagging wrist injury. The lack of goals at times this year (aka the whole season except for when E Staal and/or Skinner get hot) is very alarming. I don't think we've ever had this much forward talent, or at least not since '06 and the goals aren't there. What happened to the magic line of Tlusty Staal Semin? Again, if Semin has a nagging injury, then that is understandable. I'm a big fan of his, but he really needs to produce for us to win, more so than Ruutu and Tlusty in my opinion. But that is 3 top 6 players that have been invisible, that have a history of being really effective. I don't know what gives. As I said earlier, I get that everyone is frustrated with being a bubble playoff team once again, but I'm much more concerned that we have more talent than I have ever seen and no Mo and for some reason it just isn't working. Hopefully they can work it out
  3. You guys are more short term oriented than Wall Street. I mean seriously, it's insane! After a win: "WE"RE GONNA MAKE A DEEP RUN IN THE PLAYOFFS!!!" After a loss: "TRADE CAM/ERIC/RUUTU/JORDAN, FIRE JR, FIRE MULLER! ANOTHER SEASON DOWN THE DRAIN!" Take a step back people...we were tanking, then had a 5 game win streak, and now two losses in a row. Every team has ups and downs. While I agree, I am nervous that we will once again miss the playoffs, I think we all agree that this team has the talent to make the playoffs and is at least average. It is not a BAD team that needs to blow up and start over (ex. Buffalo/Edmonton). We have played below our potential the last 2 seasons IMO (since we got Semin and J Staal I think we turned a point in saying that the talent simply wasn't there. We have the talent). We just saw a 5 game flash of that potential. Now let's see if they can play more like that and less like the last 1.5 years. JR will probably have to do some roster tweaking, and Muller still needs to coach, but the up and down swings on this forum are ridiculous. The bottom line is that this is a borderline playoff team that is flirting with the line and will continue to do so for the rest of the year, but should make the post season based on our talent and personnel. So going on one of these swings and saying we are an elite team or a terrible team is simply ridiculous.
  4. atsrob, As others alluded to, Gleason WAS really good for us for years. A very solid, gritty stay at home defenseman. This year with injuries and other young defensemen stepping up, he never got going. Hopefully with a change of scenery and a bigger need/role, he will do well for your defense in Toronto. The past couple years he was considered our best defenseman and the anchor of our D.
  5. Whitney-E Staal-Semin Williams-Francis-Stillman Skinner-Brind'amour-Cole Weight-Sutter-Ruutu Wesley-Hedican Gleason-Faulk Wallin-Seidenberg Ward Irbe I'll admit I was very young and a very casual canes fan until about '09, so I'm hazy on the older guys. May be off base
  6. That's what I don't get though. It's not injuries. None of our important forwards are out (sorry LaRose). Sure, we are allowing lots of goals...but what I don't get is that we are scoring 1 goal per game now!!! We were putting up like 4 goals per game and our top line was the best in the league. None of them are injured. Nobody on the 2nd line is injured. We got a great player in Ruutu back. Nash caught fire and filled our 3rd line center spot. How does this group of forwards go from video game scoring to absolutely NOTHING in the snap of your fingers. (I was there for this "shift"...2nd period of Caps game at home this team just had its memory wiped or something) How does that just happen? Nothing has changed. The D has injuries and is mediocre at full strength and we are on our 3rd and 4th string goalie...so I get that we are giving up goals. I am just baffled at what happened to our forwards/scoring. All 12 can't be in a slump at the same time.
  7. I think Brent is the perfect 4th line center and would hate to see him go next year. He wins faceoffs, doesn't make big mistakes, and is very useful on the powerplay. I also think Wallace is useful as a poor man's Ruutu, making big hits and skating fast. I still like Bowman a lot as he is a good 2-way player with a good shot. So I guess, in my opinion, LaRose has to go. I love his attitude and the fact that he has been a Cane for a long time, but with his salary and all of these good new younger options...he just doesn't fit anymore. Also, Welsh hasn't proven anything and I'd much rather see him go than Brent. As for Terry, I like him, but not more than the other guys listed above. I'd be happy to have him as the #1 call up due to injuries for the next year or so and then see if theres a good spot for him...kind of like how Bowman was all last year.
  8. remkin took the words out of my mouth. Even though I think Jussi has looked slow this year, I still think he is a Top 6 forward. He clearly doesn't play as well at Center. This Canes Country article says it all. http://www.canescountry.com/2013/3/4/4063432/jussi-jokinen-at-the-center-of-controversy Put him at 2nd line winger (or even keep him at 3rd line winger with Nash) and he'll play great. I will say though, when Ruutu comes back and with the top line being untouchable...paying Jussi what we do to be a full time third wing seems like a waste. One of the Finns becomes expendable. I love them both but with Tlusty's emergence, one doesn't fit. What a good problem to have. Too many Top 6 forwards.
  9. The doom and gloom on these forums is ridiculous! And the mood swings really. Pre-season: Canes are going to the cup!!! After 0-2: Canes won't make the playoffs, trade everyone, sign FAs. After 2-2: Canes are winning the division, playoffs here we come, our offense is the best, Muller is great! After 2-3: Muller can't coach special teams, LaRose sucks, we need more defensemen, Cam is the worst, our third line sucks, not making the playoffs. Can everyone take a deep breath and look at the bigger picture?! I know personally, and probably 99% of the people here, don't know as much about Hockey as JR and Muller. Don't you think they see these things and are working them out? The players too. We have a good GM, a great young coach, more talent on offense than ever, a proven goalie, a great backup, and one of the most talented young defensemen in the league. I feel quite good about where we are at. Even if we don't make the playoffs this year, which I think we most likely will, with Ruutu back and a full pre-season, the team is going to be infinitely more cohesive and BETTER. There has been a lot of change to the Canes in the last year, almost all for the better. Let's grab the popcorn and see what happens, and let them do their jobs! Way too early to be this worried and heavy handed with changes
  10. I really like the lines from practice today. I wasn't sure about Tlusty last year until he shined with Staal towards the end. He and Staal worked extremely well together and I'm pumped to see that again+Semin.
  11. 1) Who scores the first goal of the season? Semin 2) Who scores the first assist (primary assist only if there are 2)? E Staal 3) Who takes the first penalty of the season? Gleason 4) What will that penalty be for? Boarding 5) Who scores the first PP goal? J Staal 6) Who has the first fighting major of the season? Westgarth 1) What will the Canes record be on and including Feb 12th?(after the first 12 games) 5-6-1 2) How many games will our back up goalie have played by and including Feb 12th? One
  12. I really like the defensive pairings, if Pitkanen and Faulk play well together. If so, that is a really good pairing, with great puck moving and offensive capabilities. Dangerous with the top two lines. The Gleason/Corvo pairing is tried and true, a great mix of offense and defense and a high level pairing. Harrison and McBain is also a good mix of offense/defense. A nice 3rd pairing. As for the forward lines, I really hate that Ruutu is out. It makes a huge difference. I don't like LaRose on the second line at all, but he would be great at third line. Tlusty convinced me he belongs on the first line last season after the good numbers he put up with E Staal. I like our top line. I hate having to put Jussi at 3rd line center, but it seems like the best/only way. I wish we could get rid of Nodl or Dwyer to free up a spot for Bowman on the third line.
  13. Im guessing not, because that's only 37 games. That's probably the remainder of the original schedule
  14. I think that Nodl played pretty well last year. And since Dwyer=LaRose and the latter played pretty well last year, I think I'd get rid of Dwyer. We do have a log jam in the 3rd and 4th. I think we need to let Stewart go too-I like him but he just hasn't produced at all.
  15. I'm a little shocked that everyone is still freaking out over the top 6. "Powerless offense" "We need TWO more top 6 wingers?!" We added 1 good top 6 guy and now have a very respectable top 6 with Ruutu, E Staal, Tlusty, Jokinen, Skinner, J Staal. Tlusty is the "weak link" in there but he showed he's no slouch last year. It's not like we have Larose and Samson in our top 6 anymore. We have a much bigger need at defense right now-I'd love another top 6 winger, but we need a good stay at home defenseman way worse! We lost Allen and remained practically unchanged besides that from last year. Everyone knows how many shots Cam faced. Why is everyone still prioritizing the top 6 over the D?
  16. Does anyone know more about Coliacovo? He sounds intriguing. I vote no on Corvo.
  17. Bill_B, Yep I was OK with 5 of the 6 of our top 6. Don't get me wrong, I'd be thrilled to kick Tlusty out (or even Jokinen) for a guy like Bobby Ryan. As for the gritty forward to protect Skinner, that isn't high on my list at all. I'd hate to trade someone like Jokinen or demote Tlusty for a big oafy forward just to goon it up when Skinner acts immature. Even if he is a good oaf, I feel like trading a skilled passer like Jokinen for a "big net presence" may not be a good idea. I think Skinner will be better this year, and I'd rather have a big oafy defenseman on the ice to do that duty. Plus now he'll probably be playing with 6'4" 220 lb J Staal. As for the D though, you are right-Suter will be a tough grab. I don't know what other D men could be available but any top 2-4 D man I would definitely prefer to look at over a top six forward.
  18. Looking at this rationally, I don't think we should go for a Nash/Ryan. The way I see it is that our top 6 now is pretty good. We have either Staal and Staal on the top line with Skins and Finns 2nd line which we loved, or we have: Jokinen E. Staal Tlusty Skinner J. Staal Ruutu ...which I think is awesome. Who in there do we want to replace with a Nash/Ryan? The top answer would obviously be Tlusty. But he really looked like a 1st liner at the end of last year and plays very well with Staal, and he is cheap. If he continues to play like he did, he is young and can be a very good player for us for a long time to come. We already have him, no question on chemistry, no worry of what we need to give up to get him, no money concern. Conversely, if we go for Nash, we may have to give up some huge pieces of our future (for example, losing Sutter) and a lot of money with potential risk of the new player not liking our team, area, system and slumping or wanting out or wanting more money than we can give them down the road. So unless Tlusty tanks this season, I think our top 6 is very good (maybe not Pitt/Phil/NYR great, but good chemistry, good at filling all roles needed). So I think we really need to look at our 3rd line and our Defense. We all know our Defense needs work. We can't let Cam face the most shots in the league again. I think Suter is a much smarter pursuit than a top 6 guy. I also like what I am hearing about Gaustad for 3rd line. That may be a much more doable move that is still important for us. We have a stable of third and fourth liners (and prospects) that I would love to move. It's a log jam. If not a FA pickup, look at a trade with any of the following names-McBain, Nodl, Dwyer, LaRose, Stewart, Dalpe, Boychuk, Bowman. Right now our Defense looks something like: Pitkanen Gleason Faulk Harrison McBain ??? If we ended up with Pitkanen Suter Gleason Faulk Harrison Sanguinetti/Murphy We would be looking Golden. We don't have 1 stud defenseman.
  19. Because Sutter is a great Defensive forward so having him on the 3rd line makes us a deeper team. That gives us 2 scoring lines and a shutdown checking line that can still score occasionally. If we move him to 2nd line center, we have 2 better scoring lines, but a weak checking line that will almost never score. I dont know which would be better but I think that 3rd line has done great recently
  20. PenaltyKiller, I disagree. Our Defense looks great right now. It is playing well with what we have, and we are about to get back our best OFD/puck moving defenseman, Joni. He was hit or miss last year, but before he got injured he looked very good and should fit into Muller's system very well. Then next year, we most likely have an elite talent coming up in Ryan Murphy. He could easily surpass Faulk in his rookie year success. He has been on a tear in the OHL and has huge offensive upside. So we could get rid of Allen or Spacek and have a better defense than we have now. We are deep with Defensive prospects that dont get a chance like the forward prospects do (ie. Sanguinetti). We could have the following lineup next year that I think could be very very good. Unlike our forward lines which are more up in the air and dependent on a big off season pickup. Pitkanen-Gleason Harrison-Faulk Allen-Murphy/Sanguinetti/Joslin/McBain
  21. That is awesome! Glad to have a Canes fans all over the world. The fact that you pay 20$ a month and wake up at 4am to watch Canes games is so cool!!! Thanks for your dedication and welcome.
  22. Im really going to miss Ruutu if we lose him. As someone else said, he is exactly the kind of guy I would want if we didnt have him. He is a sniper-he can score and he is super physical. And as has been said, he seems like a great guy. How can you not love Ruutu? He even has an awesome name! I think he is most surely top 3 talent and Id be happy to pay him 4 million. As much as I like Jokinen as well, I think Ruutu is definitely the better player. Jussi is super smart, a great playmaker, and has great deking ability, but he has looked a little slow this year and isnt producing as much. I agree now that we should trade Pitkanen. I like him, but we really dont need him and he has lots of trade value. He could help out our top 6, and with Murphy coming next year and Faulk/McBain this year, we have no shortage of offensive defensemen. Id be happy to trade McBain as well. Apparently he is appealing for his offensive ability, but I have always seen him as a liability on D. I hope JR impresses us over the next few months. I feel like the opportunity is there to really build a great team. Hopefully he wont Cole/Kaberle it up.
  23. This makes me nervous. I wanted to trade Gleason as I thought he was the most expendable guy we had that had good value. We have plenty of D-talent to fill the gap, and now we just locked up a big contract...seems more likely that Ruutu will be gone now and he in my mind is NOT expendable and will put another gaping hole in our top 6. Im nervous...
  24. I am 100% for trading Gleason because we are stacked at Defense and he could fetch a good return. With Joni coming back from injury, Joslin already available, and Murphy probably next year, I feel totally fine with getting rid of Gleason (or McBain, or Allen). Especially if we could get a top 6 guy! Total no brainer to me. Top 6 guys are so hard to come by that I would give Gleason and Poni/Boychuk/Tlusty/Nodl/Stewart/Dwyer/draft pick for a top 6 guy. Voracek or JVR sound great! I think Gleason is good, its just that we have pletny of D and potential D, and not nearly enough top 6 talent. Thats why Im really stuck on Ruutu. I love Ruutu (Probably my favorite forward behind Staal and Skinner). But I would hate if he walked after this year and we got nothing for him, but Id also hate to see him get traded...Ideally Id love if we traded him to a contender and got a great return like we should for a player of his level, then he came back at a reasonable price in the summer (Finn hometown discount?). That would be perfect. But since that is utopia and the NHL is reality, I dont know what to do about Ruutu. But Gleason or Allen or McBain+lower level canes...trade away!
