McK is good but not Fleury good.  Pesce was good on his offside but Gardiner needs a solid defensive partner.

We'll have to agree to disagree on the first part - i saw too many games last season where McK played circles around Fleury.  I want to see good things from Fleury, but it's a struggle sometimes.  I still think Didier and JWesley were better options, but i'm just this old hippie in the stands - the committee obviously didn't see what i saw in those two.  I definitely agree with you on a solid defensive partner for Gardiner, though.

It is a good move. He looked worse because he was being forced into a top line role where he was asked to be the defender of the pair.

4.025 million for a 2nd pair, UFA, puck moving defender is a steal (which is crazy to say).

He will make some Faulk level mistakes

    Jesus, Gardiner.

We need to get away from the annual naming of captains.

I agree with this, but i'd rather have annual naming of captains than the no-C/3-A's option or naming 2 Captains like season before last.

so I voted "some other player" for who will get it.

I want a "some player" option... i'd vote for that.

    "Who's the new Captain?"

    "Some player."

  4. I don't think having co-captains had any more to do with a bad season than having a single captain caused bad seasons the 8 seasons before it.  As to who the right choice is, i'm not in the room either so i can't call it.  I still feel the players should choose their captain.  I certainly don't see either Staal or Faulk as players who can carry the team on their back like Brind'Amour or Williams, but again i'm not in the room so i can't call it.  Fully agreed with SD - it isn't about selling jerseys.  Find the real leader and not the posterboy.

That’s 5 “ifs” one over the limit.👍🏿SPECTOR’S NOTE: Thornton’s returning to the Sharks. If Williams doesn’t retire, the Hurricanes are believed the only club he’ll skate with.

Can't argue with that.  But to add a 6th "if", the committee may be feeling if he chooses not to return and they don't have a contingency plan.  I just hope he's given the committee a hint one way or the other.

I meant that when he makes a decision. As long as its before camp starts it’s only a problem for the board boldrum blues.

Or it could be a problem if the team would need to find someone to fill his role if he decides not to come back.  If he waits until the 11th hour, the committee won't have so much time to work on filling his shoes.  If they already have a plan in place then perhaps it isn't an issue, but if they're waiting on his decision to know if they need to further attack free agent market, he isn't doing them any favors by putting off the decision.

As of right now I think this is the ideal lineup. Gauthier can bring in more grit.  I think he has the body and ability to contribute now.  Necas first call up.  Thoughts on the forward lines so far?

I apparently missed a nickname being given out, but who the heck is 'McLovin'?

re Gauthier:  I've seen absolutely nothing in his game that tells me he's ready for the NHL.  Maybe he is, but based on last season anyway, i'm not seeing it.  You want a Checker to provide grit to the Hurricanes' 4th line, i'll take Bishop every day of the week and twice on Thursdays over Gauthier.

    Priske's goals over 4 years: 4, 7, 11, 17.  Fox's over 3 years: 6, 6, 9.  McAvoy over 2 years: 3, 5.

To the surprise of absolutely no one, show me he can defend and i'll get excited.  Goals from a defenseman are nice, but if he can't defend, he isn't doing his real job.  Cam Ward is one of the leading scorers amongst goaltenders in the NHL but that doesn't mean i want to rely on him to stop pucks.  Make the cake first and then the goals can be the icing.

  9. I've been telling Mrs. Realm for months that we'd get new whites next season and that they'd be based on the blacks (i'm not ultra-clairvoyant or anything - i'll bet most of you have been thinking it too).  That video doesn't reveal much, but it doesn't give me any reason to think i (we) was (were) wrong.

  10. I saw Saarela play a decent number of Chex games and i never saw anything in his game that made me think he was a legit NHL prospect.  He scored at the AHL level, but then so did Chris Terry and Zach Boychuk.  If he had given the committee a real reason to make a decision, they likely would have made a decision.  There's a reason he was rarely the one called up, and that reason had nothing to do with anyone not making a decision.

  11. I followed the Whalers a little back then because the IceCaps were briefly affiliated with them and i remember him being there, but like the Hurricanes now the Whalers were lucky to get one nationally televised game each season, so i can't say for sure i ever saw him play a game.

At least that's one question answered.  Williams, you're up...

I like the idea of Puljujarvi given the upside, and I don't care about him wanting out, I just don't see us doing it, unless J Williams retires.

To which i'll continue riding the horse i've been riding all offseason - Williams is doing the team no favors by prolonging his decision.  Not saying the Canes would be interested in Puljujarvi anyway nor that they'd necessarily be able to get him, but if they knew Williams was on his way out, perhaps they could be looking at backup plans, Puljujarvi or no.  As it is, Williams continues to sit on the pot without doing anything.
