  1. while there are probably no numbers available look at the numbers in the chat room during the game or posts in the game day threads.  the decline seems noticeable.  wonder what is the percentage of the populace that would care if the Canes moved?

Attendance is just over 12,000 - i'd say that pretty much equals the number of people who would care if the team moved.  Given a population of ~2,000,000 in the triangle area, that's about 0.6%.  I won't even take into account the percentage of those who are Hurricanes fans and not transplant fans going to see their favorite team when it visits Raleigh...

  2. If I jinx this kid, i'll never forgive myself.  So with the drafting of Hanifin, in addition to Fleury, Slavin, Pesce, Carrick, McKeown, the Hurricanes defensively seem set in the future.  But after 12 games and a terrible schedule, who's leading our team in +/-?

    Ryan Murphy

This is the guy a lot of people either questioned his spot or completely wrote him off.  I thought his preseason was up and down, but man has he come in and provided a service this team has needed.  Even though I still think he plays it a little too cautious sometimes, he's been very consistent.  I said on another board that he's probably been our 2nd best dman.

I think his +/- has as much to do with being paired against 3rd- and 4th-liners than it does anything else, but he has looked good for the most part.  I made a point to keep an eye on him for a few shifts last night (as best i could watching on television) and his positioning was solid and his passes were crisp.  I don't think he'll ever be top 4, but i think he's on pace to be a solid 3rd-pairing contributor.  And i don't mind the cautiousness if it keeps him honest.

  3. My percentages are tripe, I agree...haha. I don't watch a lot of basketball, but do lots and lots of football and hockey and there's a clear difference in the number of times the team based on their play that game "didn't deserve to win" or "got the lucky breaks" or "good bounces" wins in hockey vs football. Quantifying that difference along with determining the proper scope of random variation would get someone a PhD. I will contribute 4 bits to the board's scholarship fund if it will help find someone to solve this conundrum....

The off-setting difference, however, is that over an 82-game season a hockey team can easily overcome the occasional bad luck / bad call game.  In football where they play a measly 16-game (14?  not sure...), a couple bad call games and your season is shot.  Likewise the 1-game 'winner take all' when they reach the playoffs.  A bad luck goal or two in a best-of-4 series can be overcome... a bad call in a playoff football game and whoops - there go your hopes and dreams...

  4. It appears Semin is now being scratched on a nightly basis. I guess his initial scoring was a false alarm.

It's a shame because there's so much potential.  A bigger shame that because of JR's knee-jerk signings, the Hurricanes are still paying him millions of dollars a year to sit in the pressbox for another team.

  5. An interview goes two ways, Chantel was asking boring dim-witted questions. At least Michelle is asking things that have a chance of non-generic answers.

Michelle brings a professional poise to what she's doing, Chantel appeared to be trying to get ready during the games and seemed genuinely confused most of the time.

What was it Chantel asked that one time?  "What did it mean to the team for you to score that goal in overtime?" or something like that?  I don't remember who it was now, but the answer was something like "Well, we won...".  Yeah, she was rough.

My '0 times 100 is still 0' comment above was meant as dissatisfaction with Chantel, not Michelle.  I like Michelle was well.  She brings a professionalism to that role we haven't had since Bob Harwood.

  6. I agree the article was fair enough. We now have a time-line for Staal's agent and Francis to talk. Suggesting trading Staal and Ward is only an opinion not a fact. Just how bad we are or will be is an opinion, nothing more. But if we did find game everyone must admit we would be exceeding almost everyones expectations including our own.

We've already exceeded mine by winning 3 games in October with potential, slim as it may be, for more.  Actually it's not entirely slim, either - we've already beat one of our remaining October opponents once this month.

  7. I said it in the Sharks gdt and i'll say it here, I'm not excusing Lack's play.  It's obvious he could've played better, I'm not disputing the fact.  I'm just stating that the 2nd and 4th goal he let in were results of 2 on 1 breakaways for SJ, and one goal he was interfered with.  I'm not ready to make Lack the scapegoat or whipping boy.  When a team loses, no one person is to blame.  Even if Lack was sharper (or at least sharper) it still would've taken a perfect game by our players to win against a team that was playing tired and half-hearted.  That should be the real concern of this team.  We can't expect to score 2 goals (3 goals in 3 games), and expect to win on a nightly basis.

I can't dispute that one.  Lack certainly didn't steal a game for the team, but he can't be faulted for the whole thing either.  2 goals wins very few games in today's NHL.  Peace.

  8. Since raleighcaniac went there, it got me thinking...maybe Lack is in cahoots with Cam. I mean it makes sense. Lack got his deal, now he makes sure that the Canes don't feel comfortable going with just him, so Cam can get his deal. As soon as Cam gets signed Lack starts playing like a stud, then Cam buys Lack a nice car and everyone's happy.

I'd be happy.  Maybe they can even tank enough in the process to get Matthews...

  9. The Penguins are at the bottom half in offensive stats, but they are a very potent team. The Sharks are the same way. And SJ's been without Logan Couture. They have Thornton, Marleau, Pavelski, Couture, Hertl, Ward, Burns. That's as talented of offense as there is in the nhl.

Well, Lack certainly made them look that way.  But truthfully you can look at pretty much any roster in the NHL and say they're potent and talented.  And i'm not saying the Sharks aren't, because they obviously are - but i'll still strongly debate them being top 3, particularly at this time.  And including Couture is utterly irrelevant because he didn't play, and the whole point of discussion is what Lack did face, not what he could have faced had everyone been healthy.

A back-to-back against a team on a 4-game win streak and a team on a 3-game losing streak - i'd say the losing streak was certainly the better time to put Lack back in.  As for the 'cold' argument, not playing for a few games certainly didn't stop Nash from scoring a goal, and he'd been out longer than Lack.  I'd love for Lack to get into a groove just as much as you would, and yes, i feel he could have gotten another start or two before Saturday night - but he didn't, so it was up to him to make his case for more.  But he didn't, and it wasn't because of top 3 potency and talent - it was because of a couple softies that trickled through that the Blue Jackets' 4th-liners could have poked home, much less the supposed top 3 talent he was facing.

  10. Yep, put a cold goalie against a top 3 offensive team in the league. Makes sense.

In what alternate reality are the Sharks a top 3 offensive team?  As of this morning they are #12 in GF, and that's after scoring 5 on us last night.  Before that they had only scored 18 goals and were on a 3-game losing streak...

edit - Just did the math.  Before last night, San Jose was 15th in GF.

  11. Didn't play in last night's win - maybe tomorrow in Chicago.

Hey, off topic kinda, but is there any way to have those apostrophes removed from the title and description of this sub-forum?  Canes' System or just Canes System are grammatically fine, but throwing that apostrophe in the middle of 'Canes' is utterly wrong and drives me crazy...

  12. He very well could be - but then even if he is, that gives the Hurricanes one too many when Nordstrom is healthy.  Unless they want to carry an extra forward as well, dunno.  But i'd have to think sending Nordstrom or Terry to Charlotte will produce as much if not more than Bowman, and without bringing yet another fringe guy into the mix.

Fun to speculate when Bowman isn't even showing up on the Checkers site yet, no?

  13. I just wonder what the circumstances are that have the Checkers bringing him in.  Based on stats and game reviews (i obviously haven't seen a game yet this season) they're looking good offensively already - what piece is he going to fit?  I could see them bringing in another defensemen in order to fill a void for the Hurricanes to bring up a full-time 7th guy, but forwards?  The organization is pretty well-stocked with fringe forwards already, many of whom (hopefully) have more potential at the NHL level than Bowman...
