Rats strike fast

Nick Dodge had two goals and linemate Michael Ryan added a third to give the River Rats a 3-0 lead over Binghamton after one period in tonight's game at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena.

Jakub Petruzalek assisted on all three goals for Albany, which has won three straight games and began the night 13 points behind third-place Binghamton in the East Division standings. The Rats trail fourth-place Bridgeport by 12 for the final playoff spot with 30 games remaining, including tonight.

Justin Peters is making his second straight start for Albany, and stopped all six shots he saw in the first period. Martin Gerber allowed three goals on 11 shots for Binghamton, which is 3-0-2-0 in its last five.

South Glens Falls native Shawn Weller, shaken up on a heavy hit Saturday night in Springfield, is not in the Senators lineup.

Sens trim Rats lead

Cohoes native Marc Cavosie had the lone goal of the second period, but the River Rats will take a 3-1 lead into the final 20 minutes.

Cavosie, who began this season on a pro tryout with Albany before joining Binghamton in mid-November, netted his sixth goal of the season with 5:20 left in the second. It was the fifth goal in 17 games in calendar year 2009 for the former Albany Academy and RPI star, who had one goal in his first 30 games.

The Rats are 13-3-3-0 when taking a lead into the third period. Binghamton is 2-13-2-2 when trailing after 40 minutes.

Rats win fourth straight

The River Rats rode three first-period goals to a 4-2 victory over Binghamton tonight at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena.

Nick Dodge scored twice, Michael Ryan had a goal and assist and Jakub Petruzalek added three assists for Albany (23-23-3-2), which won its season-high fourth consecutive game.

Goaltender Justin Peters stopped 23 of 25 shots to earn his third straight win and second in as many nights after the Rats edged Portland in a shootout, 4-3, Tuesday at the HSBC Arena in Buffalo.

Alternate captain Pat Dwyer sealed the win on his 12th goal of the season with 67 seconds left in regulation.

Cohoes native Marc Cavosie, who began the season with Albany, scored for Binghamton in the second period, and Sens captain Denis Hamel got them within 3-2 midway through the third.

The game was the home debut for new Senators head coach Curtis Hunt, who replaced Cory Clouston, promoted to the NHL's Ottawa Senators last week.

Three stars were: 1. Dodge (2g, 0a, plus-1); 2. Petruzalek (0g, 3a, plus-1); 3. Ryan (1g, 1a, plus-2).

Three-Goal First Period Moves River Rats Record Back To .500

BINGHAMTON, NY - The Albany River Rats three first period goals as they defeated the Binghamton Senators 4-2 Wednesday night at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena.

If there were any thoughts of Albany showing fatigue after their physical contest in Buffalo Tuesday, those were erased from memory as the River Rats scored on each of their first three shots of the game. All-Star left wing Michael Ryan swooped down the left wing and snapped a wrist shot from the left circle that beat goaltender Martin Gerber over the glove just 1:24. The goal, Ryan

Well I did not catch all this game because I had to work lastnight. But I was very impressed with the first period we had lastnight. Glad to see them on a roll again.
