the Stick Collector Thread

I'm real excited about this... I added my first pair of skates to the collection today: Jeff Skinner's first pair of skates as a professional athlete. Issued May 1, 2010 to Jeff from Bauer to be used in the 2010-2011 season. I don't know when he stopped wearing them, but it was some time after the all-star break I believe. They have some interesting marks left from blocked shots and other impacts but are in pretty good shape. One is size 9, the other 8 3/4. They are also labeled with his name, number and date issued.

I saw those too, but was a little leery if they were genuine, especially for the price. Wish The Eye still sold game used equipment. Made that sort of thing easier to verify.

L

They are real. I actually thought they were fake when I saw on eBay since Hurricanes have never put the name tag underneath the skates. They use black sharpie to write the numbers. By the way, I got some information from an insider saying that someone got these from the locker room and sold on eBay. The reason why these skates have name tags is that they are from when Skinner played in junior.

It's funny, Nate, because I did the same thing, sort of. I asked a LOT of questions to make sure these were legit, one of which was where/how did he get them. I mentioned names and his explanation was right on. I know they were expensive, but with a little overtime last weekend was all I needed for them.

Did you bid on any game worn jersey from Rod Brind'Amour night? :)

LOL! I watched those for days until the cheapest one was like $700 or so... I couldn't believe how much they made off those! I was hoping to get the Harrison or Peters jerseys, but they were way out of my price range.

Did you notice all the jerseys that were made for guys who weren't even on the roster? That was weird.

Good that you guys know the right questions to ask. I don't buy often enough to be 100% sure I've covered all the bases. My collection is fairly small, mostly due to space considerations, but the items I have I love.

That said, can I send you my wish list? I'm sure you guys could get a thriving business going and I know I have one or two things I'd love to add! :)

I was looking at Jussi's jersey. Then the price was up and up and up and... I gave up lol. I noticed too that there were some of them were for guys in Charlotte. Those jerseys did not have the player's autograph, but Brind'Amour's autograph. Not sure if they wore those in Charlotte as well or they were game issue. I forgot what the description said.

As for my collection, those are all I have. I wish I could get Skinner's, but it would be so hard to get. I don't even have Brind'Amour's. Well, as a collector, it's difficult to stop looking huh? lol

Yeah, I remember Swanson's words of warning and wisdom the night I bought my first three sticks from him: "Watch out, collecting sticks is addictive."

The ones for the Charlotte players were listed as game-issued, not game-worn, and they do issue a fair number for the most likely call-ups in case they are needed, they did the same thing for Wesley night.

I got Jussi's jersey. And yes the price was up and up and up.

Love the Skinner skates, JB.

ETA: Oops, JB. Just saw your note about Harrison's jersey. I'm the one you should be looking at about that one too.

That's cool. Jussi is one of my favorite. He's a nice guy on and off the ice. Well, I don't think that I can afford any game worn jersey, so I'd better stay with sticks and some gloves.

I don't think that I saw Staal, Ward, and Skinner jerseys in the auction. Maybe they keep them for the silent auctions at the games. Do you know what they do with the warm up jerseys? The ones that everybody wore during the retirement ceremony.

Cam's jersey was auctioned off at Casino Night. Chad's was the in-arena auction last night. Not sure about Staal or Skinner or Cole, although I imagine that K&C may be holding them back in case they need big ticket auction items for the playoffs.

It was my understanding that the game jerseys would be auctioned off but the warmup jerseys would not be. The Wesley warmup jerseys were given to the players, I suspect that was the case for Brind'Amour night warmups as well. The Flyers auctioned their warmup jerseys on the NHL auction. They didn't go for nearly the prices that the Canes jerseys went for, but they weren't personalized either, and of course not technically game-worn since they were only worn in warmups. We bought the one Ville Leino wore, it has his autograph, and that and the interior label are the only way you know it is his, and it also has Brind'Amour's autograph.

I don't have any gloves, but I do have a few sticks, and I have one skate. I think all of them are special in their own right. I think it's an incredible opportunity to own something a favorite player once wore or used in a game.

Hey JDK! How have you been?

Well, I'm glad the Harrison jersey went to someone who deserved it. Plus, the money I would have used on that went to the skates, so I'm happy with the way things panned out.

You are totally right, owning game used equipment helps bring us a little closer to this special game and wonderful group of guys that we have come to love.

Here are some new pics of my stick and hockey collection. I also built a "locker" to display some jerseys and some other cool items.

The locker with LED lights:

Wow!  Nice collection!  I wish I had more sticks than I have, although I love the ones I do have.  I have a used and signed Jesse Boulerice stick, and an unused, but signed, Alexander Ovechkin stick.  They are my pride and joy.  I have a TON of memorabilia, but those are the only sticks I have.  I'll be watching this thread for any potential buying tips.  My only tip is to visit The Eye if you can.  Usually they have a whole rack full of used player sticks, and getting an autograph on it from the guys is easy peasy.  Sometimes you'll even find sticks at The Eye from players who are no longer on the team, or who have been called down to Albany.

do you mean the eye at crabtree?

That's funny on two or three levels, he has the shortest stick on the team (at least that's what Trip says). That's strange for a defenseman. Maybe that's his problem... :letssee:
