Canes vs Wild to open '10-11 in Helsinki - New Travel Package info added!

Recommended Posts

Because of this huge fiasco, I went ahead and bought my own game tickets on lippu.fi

That's what i've done and in 24 hours they sent me the tickets. Now i'm waiting the best offers for book the flight and the hotel.

Any chance you can post what the grand total was for the tickets? I checked and it seemed that it was pretty close to what the Canes/AAA were asking.

I bought a ticket for both games in the lower level Club section for $378 Euro ($189 x 2) and shipping was $35 Euro. With the current exchange rate, my total was $556.45.

AAA Raleigh told me this morning that 170 Caniac travel requests have been dealt with. Wow! That's more fans than Chicago had at this seasons opener.

Probably just a general thought but many people around here are transplants that are used to traveling quite a bit whether it be for work or to visit family, and many corporate jobs require international travel too.  I wonder how MN is doing with their travel arrangements and how high the interest is there?

I would check out Northwest/Delta. Their rates were hovering in the high 800 to low 900 range a few days ago and you would fly via DTW and Amsterdam. I am not a fan of AA and transferring in London isn't my favorite thing.

I was thinking the same; also, wonder if there is a direct flight from the Twin Cities?

You mean $556 for 2 people for each game right?  I'm only seeing an option to buy the games separately.  And it looks like $556/game for 2 people.  Yikes!

I looked on the Wild's website a few days ago and couldnt find a single thing about the games.

no... 2 games, 1 ticket per game.  You have to buy the games separately.

I looked at the MN site over the weekend to see what they were doing, and the only thing I could find were a few fans complaining about how a European start would be detrimental to their season.

My Canes ticket rep asked me the same day the news came out about the packages if I wanted to buy game tickets that same day.  He told me he could help me with that.  So, it appears that one could buy tickets independently.

TSA wondered about what was going on in Minnesota about travel packages.  Well, I posted this question on their board and from the replies I'm glad we're not in their division.  They appear to be a rather belligerent bunch, based on the comments about the Canes.  I'd rather be dealing with the Slug fans than these people.

I priced tickets and hotel(based on 2 people attending):

2 lower level Club Seats for both games - $1116

4 nights Radisson Blu - $850

Total: $1962

So for the 'Land' package the Canes are offering you are paying $1,342 for the following...

· Transportation to see the Carolina Hurricanes team practices

· Exclusive VIP lunch with the team

· Roundtrip transportation to both games from hotel to Hartwall Arena

· Half-day sightseeing tour of Helsinki

· Special NHL souvenir

· AAA escort

Yep, I give up. My belief is that:

1. they're still ticked off that the NorthStars went to Dallas.

2. now they have the added pain of seeing Gaborik play like he should have

I was able to get in, but it wasn't without issues. As unorganized and overwhelmed as AAA appeared to be, I'm not holding my breath that no other snafus are coming. When I saw they only had 50 air packages, I was shocked. That night, I went over to one of the ticket people holding down the booth and I told him that they are going to need more than 50. He put that shocked look on his face and was like "you think, we hope, but we don't know." I was like well I know 5 couples who are going so there's 10 right there. One of these days they will understand the fanbase they have here. Sure we are small market, but we are tight and close to this team and yes that means you will have over 100 caniacs following them to Finland.

I hope all who wants to go gets out there somehow whether with the package or on their own. I think it will be AWESOME to have hundreds of Caniacs showing up. We will show the hockey world that we aren't just some team from the south happy.gif

I too can't find anything on the Wild's site. If they aren't doing anything, then the Canes just might have 2 extra home games.

Oh and somone mentioned using who Columbus used, Premier Travel in Cary, they are known to be pretty expensive. Columbus is offering the samething the Canes are and its double. AAA was the way to go, but I also heard that they found out they were chosen the sametime we did. Ooops.

When I first tried to contact AAA, it took two days to get any response.  Either by luck or by accident, when I went to their office to get things going, I was helped by a lady who I take is a supervisor or manager.  She has the front office in the corner.  She helped me with the land package and had us on the waiting list for airline tickets and gave me her direct number.  Now she calls me at least once a day to keep me posted on the status of the plane tix and at my request extended our hotel reservations for a night to match the airline schedule we already worked out on our own.  From famine to feast.  I get the feeling that somebody lit a fire under AAA.  Maybe the Canes org?

Sadly, I will not be attending the games in Finland.  I was all set to go when they first announced the games well over a month ago.  However, based on the poor performance of AAA, I've decided not to go.

While I realize that it will be a trip of a lifetime, it really rubbed me the wrong way that I was willing to spend a large sum of money and couldn't even talk to a live person to set it up.  I tried calling several times and decided not to leave a voicemail and going by the office was not an option for me.

After I cooled off, I decided that I will hang onto that extra money and hope to use it when we make the playoffs next year.

I'm not sure how anyone (Canes or AAA) would think that only 50 fans would be interested in airfare and it just seems to me that this was handled really poorly.  Based on previous posts, it seems like AAA is trying harder now, so there's no point in assigning blame.

I hope all of those who will get to attend have a great trip and keep the rest of us filled in on their overseas experience!

I understand your frustration. It kept me up one night. But, don't throw the proverbial baby out with the bath water. It's my understanding that Canes/AAA have added more packages. It wasn't just AAA, and it wasn't just the Canes. It takes 2 to tango, and both parties seemed to start off on the wrong foot. If this is "your final answer' then we'll send pictures and post often on our experiences. But, should you change your mind, call tomorrow. Or email.

Why wouldn't you leave a message? From my understanding they had 33 messages when they came into the office on Friday. They had to return those calls first. I understand the frustration of constantly getting voicemail, samething happened to me, but I also left several messages and got a call back. They were probably letting calls go to voicemail so they could return calls as they came in. I can understand that. If someone leaves a message at 8am, you call at 9am, they pick up the phone and give you a spot, it takes a spot away from those who called before you.

As Caniac247 previously posted: "Oh and someone mentioned using who

He, she, it is correct.
Not quite double the cost, but $1200-$1500 more.

We bought the land package and then my wife made our own
ticket arrangements on AA to Helsinki and return, going through Heathrow.  It's listed as AA all the way, but she says
the leg from Heathrow will be handled by a different airline, probably Finnair.  In order to save a couple of hundred bucks on
air fare, we're staying over an extra day in Helsinki.  The savings will require an additional night
at the hotel, so it's probably a wash as to the total price.  I guess anyone willing to spend five or six
big ones shouldn’t quibble about an extra couple of hundred $.  These arrangements give us an extra day in
Helsinki, which is nice.  The Russian
border is only a couple hours to the east by car.  Maybe I can convince Ms. g105 we should rent
a car and make a trip over to St. Petersburg, only another hour or two.  I doubt it, but it would be a grand
adventure.  Think of the stories you
could tell your friends about getting lost in Russia and nobody spoke English.

My overall complaint about all this is about the lack of
planning and response by the organizing (responsible) parties, the Canes and
AAA.  We stopped by the ticket kiosk at
the RBC the night this trip was announced and the reps were clueless.  All they knew was that AAA was handling
everything.  With proper planning and a
responsible agent, everyone going should have been able to make all the
arrangements with one phone call and not go through the hassle of wondering
what is going on, waiting for replies, piecing partial packages together, etc.  As it stands, I'm
still waiting for a call back from AAA to hear if they got extra air tix (we
don't need them now) and what the extra night at the hotel costs.  Makes me uneasy; wonder what else might go
wrong.

Yes, I'm thinking of the same thing. You'll need a visa, even for a day trip. If we don't do the visa, we may just go to the border and get our pictures taken.

We did our own airfare, and are going over on Sunday so we'll have an extra day to sight see. Still excited!

Calling all Finns on the board. How difficult is it to travel via rented car from Helsinki to St. Petersburg? Train is >5 hrs from the schedules I've seen. I'm looking on several websites and I know that I need entry visa and proper auto documentation which I'd assume to get from the car agency. Also required is a "foreign drivers license" that I can get online. (Sounds dumb, but okay). What has been your experience, assuming y'all drive over the Russian border.

EDIT: Looks like we may settle for a day trip to Vyborg, Russia (2 hrs away) instead of St. Petersburg (which would require a sleepover...not driving at night).

If i was you, i would go to St. Petersburg. Much more to see and  the city is more "Russian". One day might be a little short trip to take to Pietari though. Vyborg looks like a Finnish town  that has been left to rot. Actually Vyborg is a Finnish town. Not very desirable place these days. Russian are finally starting to show some effort in reconstructing the city, but it still has many buildings that are in the same condition as they were after the continuation war. That is mainly because when there was the soviet rule in Russia , there was no interest or money to reconstruct some town other than Moscow. But i have to say again , if you go , go to Pietari. And if you go to Russia... dont take a rental car. Train is much better way to get there.

Never been to St.Petersburg but it has a lot of cultural sightseeing options like the Royal Palace and as atlantis said a 1 day trip might be bit short to see&experience everything in St.Petersburg.

Heh, interesting email last night re: the trip from the Canes. It basically said, dear STH, as you were one of the people pre-identified by a call to the club when first announced as interested in our premier event in Helsinki, AAA will start calling you tomorrow to see if you want to book.

Wouldn't that have made more sense to do oh, I don't know, when they first were ready to market the trips and they were actually still available rather than after they sold out?

Interestingly, this email came just after I voiced concern about how they handled the bookings on this as the whole thing appears to have been quite chaotic.
