Matt Cullen traded to Ottawa for Alex Picard and a 2nd round pick

Recommended Posts

Might as well leave it and re-name it when the trade happens.  I think everyone in the arena last night knew this was coming today.  My whole section was rooting for Cullen to score for his last game in Raleigh......hopefully not forever.

I will miss Cullen at Casino Night, & on the ice. BUT this is a very good move for the Canes. If it is for a rumored 2nd round pick then that would give the Canes 3 - 2nd round picks in a very deep draft. Or they could be packaged to move up & get another 1st round pick.

Cullen to Ottawa for Picard + a 2nd round pick. Done. Per Bob McKenzie TSN.

Even Better!!! Comes with a 24 year old NHL ready Defenseman who will be a RFA at the end of the year. Great deal!!!

Canes now own 3 - 2nd round picks!

Agree.  And Picard has been playing 19 minutes a night in Ottawa.  He's got some size as well...  6'2" 210.

Good job by JR.  If Cullen had to go, he at least got a nice return.

This is a great deal guys, Picard is not bad at all plus at the very least another 2nd rounder. Will someone on the d get moved now? Maybe he will replace A. Ward? The price for rentals has been very high so far this year, this is very good for us so far and Whitney is sure to fetch at least a 1st and a prospect. Things are looking good.

we've all been waiting for a trade to happen and it looks like JR has made a good move here. is it possible that wallin could be the next move. i know the trade with san jose didn't happen but did he decide not to waive his ntc?

I wish Matt all the luck in Ottawa.

Like most I wonder what d-man is out.  There are teams that are looking for veteran d-men, which Ward and Corvo could fill.  I guess we will wait and see.

The trade with San Jose did happen. He's gone and already played a couple games with them. But yes, it would seem that another defenseman has to be on the move soon if we plan on putting Picard in the lineup (Please don't send down one of the rats to make room).

Picard sounds a bit like another Eaves type player to me:

"Picard has earned the trust of Senators coach Cory Clouston this season, even if he's earned the hatred of a large segment of Senators fans due to his inconsistent play on the season. (Note: That's a different Alex Picard photo'd.) But he's put up decent points in limited time this season, developed some chemistry with on-again, off-again partner Matt Carkner, and when he's good he's pretty good, but when he's bad he's awful."

We are his fourth team since 2007 (Philadelphia, Tampa, Ottawa, Canes). Does that sound like a good asset to you?

My assumption was that we got Picard to offset salary for the Sens. If he does good for us we can resign him at the end of the season. If not, we dont have to.

Picard seems to have more offensive upside than defensive, 57 points in 184 games with a -37. Of course, he's young. Anybody have a good scouting report? EDIT - thanks CA, where'd that come from?

Sounds like more of a young Corvo replacement, though I think for now he'd fit with Alberts on the third line. I fully expect both Corvo and Ward to be moved, this pretty much confirms at least one will, since they want to avoid waiving Carson and putting someone in the box would waste $.

Best of luck to Cullen, he was a great player and member of the franchise. I do like this trade, however, and we do have a number of good picks and young players for the future!

This appears at first glance to be a good trade.  I really hate to see a favorite  go but wish Matt the best north of the border.

It will be interesting to see if our new Dman skates Saturday and which Dman sits.

(or maybe JR isn't done yet today)

Sounds like a sweet deal to me.  At worst, we get the 2nd rounder to continue to build assets.  J.R. and the staff get to try out Picard and see if he can mesh with the team and he's a RFA this year which means a reasonable contract if he is a keeper.
