Helsinki - How many are going?

Recommended Posts

I'm not going but for those of you who are - be glad you are not a Wild fan.  Their packages are considerably more $$$.  Two additional nights but both the air and land packages are about 50% more than ours if my calculations are correct.

Theirs are a little more but they include lower level tickets, so with the extra nights, I'd say about the same. I also notice they just came out with the details, good for them for avoiding the chaos. Not sure why the Canes felt the need to rush things.

^^^ Thanks for posting the link to the Wild's game package, I'd been looking for that, glad to see it's finally out. Will be interesting to see how their fan participation compares with ours. Best as I can tell we have a little over 200 confirmed so far, between those who chose the AAA trip packages and those who have purchased tickets only and are making separate travel plans.

I will be there, along with my husband and eight-year-old son. And here's the Facebook "Canes in Finland" group page TSA linked in the other thread.

3 of us going but we are just getting the tickets through the Canes and not doing the full package. Its a long way to go just for 4 days so we wanted to go the Saturday before. Younger brother is flying in from Ireland and another friend who is a canes fan is going with. Really looking forward to it although I don't know if anyone heard on the Cole exit interview today that a game or game(s) in Russia is now official? Can anyone here confirm that? I would have picked Russia over Finland in a heartbeat.

I'm going, as is my 12 yr old daughter and my sister (from Chicago). Hubby is staying home to watch the dog, hunt, and have the bed all to himself. We are going over a day early and I'm looking to book a catamaran from Helsinki to Tallinn, Estonia for a day. My plan to train it St. Petersburg fell through. Also want to hit the zoo. I'm not enthralled with the AAA sightseeing spots: both churches.

No, Cole's interview did not confirm any games in Russia. There has been talk going on for awhile regarding playing some of the preseason games overseas while the team is there, and one of the interviewers made a comment about Russia, and Cole said "Is that confirmed?" and as best as I could hear the interviewer laughed and said why not play while you're over there. Cole then spent some time talking about "food and nutrition" challenges in Russia from his experiences in Moscow when he was in juniors.

So yes, there is speculation regarding possible preseason games in Europe prior to the Helsinki opener, but to my knowledge nothing has been confirmed by either the league or the team.

I guess my survey on how many are going got diverted to a different destination.  SO I'll join the detour.  Based on the costs of the Minnesota and Carolina packages, I'd estimate they're paying more than our package charges.  Both include many of the same things (air fare, hotel, etc) after adding in $600 for two tickets.  The biggest difference I see is the extra night(s) at the hotel and possibly the seat location.  I've been a bit confused by the Hartwall Areena seat layout, but it seems they are in the lower bowl and we are in the club level of the lower bowl.  Same thing?  Bottom line is that for two of us to go, including staying over an extra day (we booked our own air tickets), we're paying about $400/person less than the Wild fans.  Probably not worth worrying about, given the fun of the whole trip.  Remember that if you leave from the US, you're going to lose the first day in transportation due to time zone changes and air travel hours.  So if you leave on the afternoon of the 4th, it'll be the 5th when you arrive.  Your first sleep night will be on the plane.

I was so excited when it was announced, but I did not expect it to cost that much. I thought about selling my motorcycle and buying another one next spring, but I guess that would be crazy. After it is over, I am going to wish that I had gone, but can't do it. There is still hope of winning the lottery! smile.gifsmile.gif

Maybe some of the resident Finn's on the board can clarify, but when I booked my game tickets on the Finnish ticket site, it seems that on one side of the lower level are 4 sections which are club seats, and then across the ice on the other side of the arena are the regular lower level sections.

I'm in but I'm not going through AAA. In addition to Helsinki, I'm also looking at going to Tallinn, Estonia and St. Petersburg for a couple of days.

What I can tell you is what Joni told me at Casino Night when I talked to him.  He said that there was going to be one game played in Russia.  That's what I know.  He said that I would need a visa to go to Russia, so I told him that I wouldn't be going.  He did quickly throw into the conversation that a passport is needed for Finland.  roll.gif

No way, My personal opinion is,,,I am against moving the NHL,NFL,NBA,MLB games to other continents! Just not a smart move to me. Yes if it is televised I will watch but I won't be footing that kind of bill. Plus ,,if I did have that kind of money I would be purchasing season tickets here for the Canes!!

Yes, JR, The Princess of Finland (Nickname given to me by Ron the Ref, and I live up to it!) will feel very lost without Big Mike yelling "That's a Carolina Hurricane's Goal, WOOO, WOOO, WOOO!!!"  The Royalty has spoken.  roll.gif

I'm in along with 3 seatmates, so that's a total of 4. Three of us got the air package while the other one used miles and just went for the land.

Got the itinerary from AAA and we arrive around 12:35pm Oct 5th.

Any suggestions on those neck pillows? I know there is one type of filling you shouldn't get, but I don't remember what that was. I need something to help me sleep on the plane. I have the hardest time sleeping on planes.

This could be of absolutely no use whatsoever but when I did a google search, here's the advice I got:

How to Be Comfortable on a Long Airplane Trip

I went to Australia once and I can say with full confidence that once you cross the International Date Line, there's no chance of being comfortable on an airplane..ever.

Alcohol has always worked for me in the past for sleeping on planes.  laugh.gif
