Helsinki - How many are going?

Recommended Posts

LOL. Yeah, I'm a little plugged in. I run the Canes in Finland group page on Facebook (over 150 followers and tons of helpful trip information, check my post on the first page of this thread for the link), and I've been blogging about the trip for the last couple of months over on Canes Country. I've also been pretty active on twitter. To the extent information is available I've been trying to disseminate it to all the trip participants.

From what I've been able to gather, less than 100 people have signed up for the official trip package for the Wild through AAA, compared to over 200 bookings through AAA here. On a like-for-like basis their trip was priced similar to ours, but their package included tickets and the package trip duration was longer and therefore more expensive, so more of their fans may have opted to manage their own travel plans. Very little has been communicated through any of their major message boards that I've been able to find.

I'm stoked we got this many people. When I paid off my balance, Mary Ann was telling me that approx. 200 booked through them, then they have another 50-100 folks who are making their own travel plans, but purchased game tickets. I believe Chicago only had approx. 150 people last year and well Florida, who knows, maybe 50 roll.gif

But it just farther proves that we might be from the South, but we love hockey just as much as any Northern State. We are going to have a great showing and I'm so happy that the finances for the first time in a long time worked out and I am able to be a part of this.

I don't post that much, but I'll be there next week, Sunday to be exact. Moving there to be with my fiance, so it will be wonderful.

I can post here and let you guys know what to expect. smile.gif I am so excited!!!

Well first off, congratulations!  What wonderful news for you!  Are you going to be there permanently as of Sunday, or is this a first trip over?  Have you been before?  I would love to hear everything you want to tell us about the Finnish experience, especially all of the little "day in the life" things you will encounter that we'd never consider sitting on this side of the pond.  Very cool...

Thanks Dreamie.  Yes, I will be there permanently when I get there on Sunday August 15.  smile.gif  I turned my notice in here on Monday, and am getting things packed and finalized.  As of right now, I have never been so this is going to be very exciting for me.  I will make sure to let you all know what to expect when you get there.  I wanted to say here, but I'm not there yet.  roll.gif

I'll be at the two games that are played in Finland, wouldn't miss out on those.  :D  I will make sure to keep you guys posted on everyday Finnish life.

This is all gonna be good stuff.  I know the boys may come back from the trip a bit tired and out of sorts.  But this Europe trip just sounds way too cool all around.

It will also have some people dusting off their globes looking for a place called "Raleigh, NC".

I had to refresh myself on the exact location of Lenin...er... St. Petersburg.  Didn't realize it was so far North.

I spoke too soon with regard to tickets in St. Petersburg.  Look here:  http://www.khlnhl.ru/en/

For those planning on attending this game, you should check, but I believe a Visa is needed to go to Russia.  At least that is what Joni told me when I talked with him at this past Casino Night when he told me about this game and the Finland games. smile.gif

A visa is definitely required to travel into Russia, and the requirements are not hard but very detailed, and the fees are not cheap (I think I read it's around $150?).

Also, Finland requires that your passport be valid for six months after your planned trip, so all travelers should make sure their passports are valid through early April 2011.

Here's something for all of you who plan to visit a sauna: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-10904691

Also, As Dreamie stated above, the six month rule is in place in many countries. So check your passport expiration date. If not valid through April, 2011, you may need to have it extended. When I applied for my passport renewal last month, I was told there was about a four-week turnaround. So you should have time to make any necessary arrangements.

I delayed buying my ticket so far, but now I finally did it, though it does not count as I am a native Finn.

I really suggest experiencing the sauna. It's really  not dangerous at all, and you will definitely know when you have had enough. One could compare it to drinking water: it's actually good for your health (especially skin), unless you end up being in WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS FINAL...

This is probably restricted to EU-citizens only, but nowadays it is possible to visit St. Petersburgh without a Visa by taking a cruise. This is a pretty new option not too many people know about.

Waiting forward to the game, also hoping to meet some of you overseas, let me know if you need a guide or so!

AAA is contacting people but I'll throw this out there:

If you were originally scheduled to leave Oct 4th on the United flight to Dulles then Frankfurt to Finland, your flight is changing. Apparently United cancelled multiple flights out of RDU, so AAA had to scramble and get new ones. They are splitting folks up into 2 flights on US Air to Charlotte. In Charlotte we will then all pick up the flight out to Munich then continue on with Lufthansa to Helsinki.

Wanted to give everyone the heads up that the Helsinki travelers have created t-shirts for the trip! Details are available at the Hurricanes in Helsinki group page on Facebook.

If you are interested in a t-shirt and for some reason can not access Facebook, click on my profile and leave me a private message (fingers crossed I get the email) and I will try to help you out!

Here's the link to the Facebook page:

Sorry, I have issues posting pictures here with this board software or I would post them for you sad.gif

I will be at the AAA meeting Monday night and will have samples of the [unprinted] shirts so folks can look at the sizing. I'll be taking orders there as well. Shirts are only going to be available to be ordered through Tuesday, 8/31, in order to get them printed and distributed in time for the trip.
