CANES MEDIA ALERTS

Recommended Posts

Chad couldn't stop grinning you could really see the excitement on his face about getting the season started. Also, just a piece of advice for JR, don't talk about raising prices when we just nearly lost the season and lost 7% ticket holders (myself included)...

So I am deeply affected by the euphoria of having my Canes back ... but really.... honestly ... I have just come off several days of listening to Forslund and Kaiton on radio interviews and watching Tripp on the ice and darn they really are a class above as the faces and voices of the franchise ......(and I have said this before in mid season slump). Rutherford too was classy in his interview - just hope we can get it going on the ice

From Mike Sundheim:

A long-standing Canes preseason tradition is the annual “media blitz,” where we try to visit a number of local television and radio stations to promote Opening Night.

For obvious reasons, we’re a little more limited with what we can squeeze into an extremely quick training camp, but we’ve already hit a few media outlets in the past week, and we have some more planned. Below is a quick run-down of this year’s blitz. I will edit this blog with any additions to the agenda, as well as links to interviews after they happen.

Friday, Jan. 11

  • G105 – Head Coach Kirk Muller visited G105’s Bob and the Showgram in-studio last Friday. It starts around the 4:30 mark here.
  • 100.7 The River – Muller also visited The River’s Kitty Kinnin in-studio last Friday. Watch that interview here.

Monday, Jan. 14

  • TSN – Eric and Jordan Staal did a side-by-side sit down with TSN’s James Duthie following practice on Monday. The interview will air on TSN’s NHL30 at 8 p.m. on Tuesday. It should be posted online for the American audience after it airs.
  • HNIC RadioJeff Skinner joined Elliotte Friedman, Gord Stellick and Kelly Hrudey on Hockey Night in Canada Radio at 3:30 p.m. Audio should be available soon.

Tuesday, Jan. 15

  • WRAL – Jim Rutherford will visit Kelcey Carlson and Bill Leslie on WRAL’s morning show bright and early on Tuesday. Tune in at 6:30 a.m. to see the Hurricanes’ President and General Manager.
  • 99.9 The Fan – Following the Hurricanes’ noon team scrimmage, Eric Staal will visit 99.9 The Fan to join Adam Gold and Joe Ovies in studio at 3:30 p.m.
  • News 14 CarolinaJeff Skinner will stop by News 14’s studios to tape an interview with Jim Connors after the scrimmage. The interview is expected to air on News 14’s Sports Night at 10 p.m. on Tuesday.

Wednesday, Jan. 16

  • 620 The BuzzJordan Staal makes the “World’s Strong Morning Show” even stronger, joining Mark Thomas and Mike Maniscalco in-studio at 8:30 a.m.
  • Mix 101.5 – Jordan will emerge from the 620 studio, make one quick turn, and visit Bill and Lynda on Mix 101.5. That interview will be taped and air on Thursday.
  • David Glenn Show – Forward Chad LaRose pays a visit to the David Glenn Show, available locally on 99.9 The Fan, following practice on Wednesday. He is tentatively scheduled for 2 p.m.

More to come, and you can follow Mike on Twitter for immediate alerts.

The Front Line: Linemates key to Staal's resurgence

Tuesday, 03.05.2013 / 12:00 PM / Fantasy Hockey Draft Rankings, Advice and Analysis

By Pete Jensen - NHL.com Staff Writer

NHL.com fantasy hockey insider Pete Jensen provides owners with in-depth fantasy forward analysis in this week's edition of "The Front Line." From updated top-100 rankings to players worth keeping an eye on, Jensen will guide your fantasy squad in the right direction.

Only 13 players League-wide posted a worse rating than Eric Staal last season. Luckily for his fantasy owners, Staal's new linemates have helped him put a positive spin on the situation.

The Carolina Hurricanes' top unit of Staal, Alexander Semin and Jiri Tlusty has emerged as one of the most lethal fantasy line combos in the land. Each member of the trio sports a plus-15 through 21 games this season -- the best combined rating of any NHL line.

STAAL_325_FWD_030513.jpg

A major fantasy disappointment last season, Eric Staal is an elite asset once again -- thanks largely to his equally hot linemates in Carolina, Alexander Semin and Jiri Tlusty. (Photo: Getty Images)

All three players came into the season with something to prove and have coexisted superbly. Semin, who fell out of favor with the Washington Capitals, has responded nicely to a change in scenery with 20 points in his first 21 games. Tlusty, who was drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2006 but previously struggled to find his niche at the game's highest level, has been a fantasy waiver wire steal with four multi-goal games (T-1st in NHL).

Staal, meanwhile, has re-established himself as a top-five fantasy forward by registering at least a point in 16 of 21 games. Staal's rating has gone from a minus-20 in 2011-12 to a plus-15 in 2012-13, but that category improvement is only part of the story. He also ranks among the top 12 in the League in goals, points and shots on goal. And here's the icing on the cake: Staal has accumulated the most PIMs (28) of any 25-plus point scorer in the NHL.

He already owns the longest point streak in the NHL this season -- 11 games from Jan. 24 to Feb. 14. Fantasy owners haven't seen such a degree of production from Staal since he had 100 points in 82 games during the 2005-06 regular season. He then reeled off 28 points in 25 postseason games to will the Hurricanes to a Stanley Cup title.

Staal was selected on average in the late second rounds of Yahoo! fantasy hockey drafts, but warrants mention among the elite-level fantasy centers to this point in the season. As far as the owners who took a chance on this proven point producer despite a career-worst category output? They're reaping the benefits of one of the more well-rounded fantasy assets in the game today.
