jb_online Report post Posted September 3, 2010 (edited) 33 of Boston caused Staal and Cole to have a lot of sore nights throughout the second series of the 2008-2009 Playoffs, but it always makes me feel good to see this pic of a little payback from our Captain and reflect on the epic win in game 7. Obi-Wan Report post Posted September 5, 2010 30 days until the season...45 different players have scored 30 or more goals in a season in franchise history since joining the NHL. The first was Blaine Stoughton in 1979-80 (setting a franchise record that still stands with 56 goals!), and the most recent was Jussi Jokinen last season (at 30 goals, he was the team's leader). Here are all the 30-goal scorers in franchise history, listed by the number of times they did it. Thirty-one thirty-goal seasons were posted with the Whalers, while the other fourteen came in the Hurricanes era. Players with a * after their name did it after the move from Hartford to Raleigh; oddly enough, no player had a 30 goal season in both Hartford and Carolina. Four: Geoff Sanderson, Eric Staal*, Blaine Stoughton, Pat Verbeek Three: Kevin Dineen, Jeff O'Neill*, Ron Francis, Sylvain Turgeon Two: Ray Ferraro, Mark Johnson, Mike Rogers, Justin Williams* One: John Anderson, Rod Brind'Amour*, Bob Crawford, Erik Cole*, Jordy Douglas, Jussi Jokinen*, Keith Primeau*, Brendan Shanahan, Ray Whitney*

Kind of surprised Whitney only did it once, he actually only did it twice in his career. Shows you how tough the 30 goal plateau is. Put Jokinen's year in perspective. Wouldn't it be something if Cole did it again? Well I can dream can't I?

Obi-Wan Report post Posted September 9, 2010 (edited) With just twenty-six days left until the first puck drop, I think it's time to do a little biography on our favorite number 26, Erik Cole. Born in Oswego, NY, on November 6, 1978, Erik Cole has always been a scoring winger. In high school, he scored 90 points in 40 career games, including 49 goals for Oswego High School. He went on to play junior hockey with Des Moines of the USHL, scoring 30 goals for them while posting 140 PIM in 48 GP, by far his highest career total. In 1997, he was brought on to the Clarkson University squad. In three years with Clarkson, he was twice an ECAC All-Star, once on the first and once on the second team, and was also named to the NCAA East All-American Second Team. That impressive 1998 season--22 goals and 20 assists in 36 games--was enough to get Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford's attention, and Cole was taken with the 71st overall pick in the 1998 entry draft. Cole joined the professional ranks full-time in 2000, and was able to post 23 goals in 69 games for the Cincinnati Cyclones of the IHL, then the Hurricanes top affiliate. In 2001, he made the team out of training camp, and joined the Hurricanes for a magical run. As part of the popular "BBC" line with Rod Brind'Amour and Bates Batagglia, Cole posted 40 points as a rookie for the Hurricanes. He had a hand in history in many ways that season. He had an assist on Ron Francis's 500th career goal. Come postseason time, Cole was ready. He scored nine points in the playoffs, including the tying goal with forty seconds remaining in the Hurricanes amazing comeback against Montreal in Game 4, now known as the "Miracle at Molson." The Hurricanes would go on to make it to the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time in franchise history. He also had a score of a different sort, when he and his wife, Emily, welcomed their first child into the world, Bella Cole. Cole's success that season would be short lived. He suffered an injury-shortened season, when he broke his leg in early February, missing 29 games and also the YoungStars contest at the All-Star Game. 2002-03 and 2003-04 were tough for Cole and the Hurricanes, as they missed the playoffs, though Cole set new career highs in goals and points in the last campaign before the NHL lockout in 2004. 2004 wasn't all bad for his family, as his son Landon was born. With the lockout, Cole went to Germany, and again came to the forefront. He had a pedestrian regular season with the Eisbaren Berlin (Berlin Ice Bears), scoring 27 points in 39 DEL games, but in the German Elite League playoffs, he scored five goals in eight games as the Ice Bears won the title, and Cole was named DEL Postseason MVP. 2005-06 started out well for Cole as well. Back in the NHL with Carolina, Cole and the 'Canes had career years. On their way to their first Southeast Division Title since 2002, Cole racked up 30 goals and 29 assists for the Hurricanes, and became the first (and so far only) player in NHL history to get two penalty shots in one game when he did so against Buffalo. He also represented the US at the Olympics in Turin, Italy. Cole, on a top line with Ray Whitney and Eric Staal when with Carolina, was a part of one of the fastest and most dangerous lines in the NHL, and looked unstoppable. Then, tragedy struck. On March 4, 2006, Penguins D Brooks Orpik hit Cole in the back, down and into the boards, a hit that cost Orpik three games, but cost Cole a lot more. He suffered a severely fractured vertebra, and the question was not when he would be back, but if. He suffered through a hellish rehab, and the Hurricanes floundered at first in his absence, particularly his young linemate Staal. However, Cole would not be denied a part in the best season he and his team had ever had, and when Doug Weight separated his shoulder in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Finals, the gritty winger surprised the hockey world by getting back onto the ice, just three and a half months after a life-threatening injury. His emotional and physical play inspired the Hurricanes, and though he did not score a point in the two games, he got to lift the Stanley Cup--and got the loudest ovation at a rocking RBC Center in Raleigh. Cole established a career high in assists and points in 2006-07 with 32 and 61, respectively, but again the Hurricanes plummeted in the standings after a magical run. His numbers dropped slightly in 2007-08, though his 51 points were still third on the team. Then, in the summer of 2009, he was shipped to Edmonton for defenseman Joni Pitkanen. Cole would do fairly well with the Oilers, notching his 300th career point by scoring a hat trick, the fifth of his career, against Washington, but the Hurricanes and Erik Cole were better together than they were apart. At the trade deadline, the Hurricanes re-acquired Cole, shipping Justin Williams to LA in a three-team swap. Cole, re-energized from his homecoming, racked up 15 points in 17 games in Carolina, and helped the 'Canes on another miracle run, this time to the Eastern Conference Finals and upsets of the New Jersey Devils and Boston Bruins. 2009-10 saw another drop-off for both Cole and the Hurricanes, as he missed more than half the season with varied injuries and managed a career-low 11 goals and 16 points. However, Cole, like his team, remains optimistic for the upcoming season. As one of the elder statesmen on a very young team, and the most playoff-experienced of any player on the roster, the Hurricanes need Cole to be a leader. If his history with the team suggests anything, it is that as goes Erik Cole, so too do the Carolina Hurricanes.
