Bear with me on this...

My crazy idea is to, within the next few years, go to EVERY SINGLY NHL VENUE to catch a game. A pic from each game will be posted in this thread as documentation of my success...and I have a mini-pennant of each NHL team that will be hung in my home office for each city we make it to.

The rules are simple:

1. It MUST be a regular season/post-season game, no pre-season.

2. My wife must accompany me...solo trips don't count (she added this).

Since we live in Oklahoma, we go to a few Stars games every year. So here's proof from the American Airlines Center: Dallas vs. Carolina last November.

15949_190862119614_505109614_3081395_4562198_n.jpg

Here's proof from Raleigh at the RBC Center: Carolina vs. Boston on my birthday in January.

18855_772462711467_9604874_42976077_6080766_n.jpg

Tomorrow, we're off to St. Louis to catch the Blues vs. Stars. Next weekend, we're off to Boston to see Rod's last game. Proof will be posted upon our return...and each time we check off another city on our quest.

So this past weekend, the wife and I went to the Scottrade Center to see the Blues vs. the Stars, and see Mike Modano play one last time before he hangs up the skates after this week.

St. Louis won 2-1.

23569_793946188407_9604874_43608021_2111575_n.jpg

23569_793946168447_9604874_43608018_1531727_n.jpg

23569_793946113557_9604874_43608008_6206660_n.jpg

True fact: Mike Modano got into only one fight in his entire career...against ROD! I guess when you get thumped by the MAN, you don't wanna fight anyone else.

All in all, the facility was great and the fans were loud and enthusiastic...BUT...it irritated me that the concessions were all closed by the start of the 3rd period. And then there's the fans...

The fans in our nosebleed section were loud, but also drunk. They were shouting obscenities at the Stars players all game...throwing popcorn at my wife and myself because we were cheering for Dallas...giving me crap because I was wearing a Rod jersey (umm, didn't you guys draft him?)...and then there was the exit...

In both Dallas and Carolina, when you want to get up and head out to the bathroom, grab some concessions, or just leave, you do it. In St. Louis, I guess there's this unspoken rule that you must wait for a TV timeout before even getting up out of your seat. With Dallas losing 2-1, less than 2 minutes to go, and us wanting to catch the tram back to our hotel downtown, we left. Oh my God, you would have thought we were both Jesse James or something because we had the entire section booing at us and screaming obscenities as we made our way down the stairs. My wife, because she was in a Modano jersey, caught the worst of it. If I printed the crap they were screaming at us on this board, TSA would permaban me. Anyways, my wife shocked the hell outta me (because she's really passive and reserved about crap like this) when she reached the bottom of the staircase leading to the outside of the level, she gave the entire section a big one-fingered salute...that sent them into a frenzy...but those morons deserved it and more. I have never been more offended by an opposing fanbase...and that's saying something being an OU graduate (those of you who know of OU/Texas know how nasty the fanbases can be towards each other).

St. Louis is checked off...and we are NOT going to another game here (or at least sitting in the nosebleed sections with these morons).

Next up: BOSTON...this Saturday...vs the Canes!

Wear a Red Sox hat with your Canes jersey and you'll be just fine there. Ignore the drunken fans in the sports pubs across the street from the Garden that will try and tell you that the Canes were once the Whalers...no kidding, they think this is news to us. Oh, and try the chowda.

HOOK 'EM HORNS!!!!!

As someone who went to school in Denton, TX, I'm not affiliated with either fanbase, but always loved saying that.

A lot of arena fans are pretty harsh when it comes to getting up and moving around when the puck is in play. After all, there is no replay at the arenas. If you miss it, you missed it. Just remember for your trip to Chicago's United Center or MSG. Fans there will be pretty vocal.

I went to TWU, and had no idea about the OU/Texas rivalry until I moved down there. I was recruited, by default, to cheer on OU for the two years I was there. I must have jinxed 'em.

23569_796345300567_9604874_43680484_1461577_n.jpg

The weekend after Easter, my beautiful wife and I continued our pilgrimage to Boston...for the Hurricanes' last game of the 2009-2010 regular season. With the experience of the trashy St. Louis fans from the previous weekend behind us, we decided to brave the Bruins fans...and boy, were they great. Honestly, the in-game experience was the best we've ever had...and don't get me wrong, I LOVE the gameday experience in Raleigh. Sure, I took some friendly ribbing form the B's fans, but it was all good-natured and respectful. Quite a few of them were displace Whalers fans...

23569_796345320527_9604874_43680485_6265155_n.jpg

Heh...how original! I came to this arena for one reason and one reason only...to see Rod play his last game. And I didn't get the memo prior to the game that he was injured. So I was extremely PISSED when I saw Sutter wearing the "A" and another Caniac told me what was going on. So yah, now I hate the Habs even more...

23569_796347416327_9604874_43680593_6305432_n.jpg

Take away the glass, and I could've been sitting on the bench...it was the best seat EVER!

23569_796347321517_9604874_43680577_447418_n.jpg

Manny being Manny...

23569_796347276607_9604874_43680572_7865982_n.jpg

The boys looked insanely shell-shocked after the three shorties were scored on them...honestly, I kinda laughed after the first one cause I think I have now seen just about EVERYTHING crazy there is to see in a game.

23569_796347286587_9604874_43680573_4937755_n.jpg

Yah, Paul wasn't happy...

23569_796347381397_9604874_43680586_3541313_n.jpg

Staal and Rosey talking afterward. Eric was really pissed after those three goals...

The experience was GREAT and I honestly hope these guys go the distance in the playoffs (I know some of y'all don't, but Dad's from Mass. and I was raised watching this team, so there). They exceeded my expectations and were a great group of guys to hang out with...and as they told my wife, I was a "great spowt" in taking their ribbing. And get this, they didn't have a problem with people getting up while play was going on...

That concludes this season...stay tuned to this thread during next season...hopefully I can knock out a few more cities before or after I get deployed this fall...

Ok guys...looks like I got some quality time in the sandbox starting next month. HOWEVER, I should be back in time for Rod's retirement ceremony in February...and the airline tix/hotel have already been booked. The next week after that game will be spent out east and we're looking at knocking off a few more cities in the pilgrimmage...Nashville, Columbus and Pittsburgh.

See y'all in Feb.

Thanks for finding it guys!

Well...umm...it doesn't look too pretty because it had to be copied and pasted from the old board and the post editors in the old board don't exactly match up to the new board. We recommend that you start a brand new thread and copy/paste all the images and text into it. You'll lose the member responses but at least your pilgrimage will be in tact. Once you have it done, shoot me a PM so I can delete this copied/older version and you'll be set to carry on with your adventures. :)

PS: You can thank a "guardian angel" for recovering the lost thread. Your angel has all your images saved the their Photobucket account so if you have them hosted on your own account, use your URL's to re-post them so they can clear the images out of their account.

Actually, the pics are from my FB account. But still, whomever my guardian angel is, THANK YOU!

Edit: I will use this post to update city/arena rankings as I continue the pilgrimage.
Rankings will be based on a 1-5 ranking...with half-rankings applicable...and will be based upon the following criteria: Arena, Fans, Atmosphere, Food, and that intangible "it" factor
1 rating: Stay away!!
2 rating: Go at your own risk.
3 rating: It's decent, but there are a few things to consider.
4 rating: Great arena, great game.
5 rating: Holy schnikeys Batman! You have got to go here if you love the game of hockey!

Dallas: 3
Carolina: 4 1/2
St. Louis: 1
Boston: 5
Columbus: 3 1/2
Florida: 3
Anaheim: 2
Phoenix: 2 1/2
Colorado: 4 1/2
Minnesota: 4
Detroit: 5
Pittsburgh: 4 1/2
Philadelphia 3 1/2
Washington: 3

Nashville: 2

Tampa: 3.5...solely cause they have a huge Van de Graaf generator that sparks bolts of lightning, and they serve poutine!

Columbus, OH

Ok peeps...this might be the only entry this season due to the fact I was deployed for most of it and now it's vacation time with the wife (and she has picked other ways to spend it over traversing the country going to NHL games)...but we knocked out Columbus on Tuesday night: Blue Jackets vs. Predators.

But before I post pics of that game...let me thank you all for the awesome experience, once again, that we had at Rod's retirement ceremony last Friday.

183279_943279642967_9604874_47476103_7449728_n.jpg

That being said, Columbus is an interesting hockey venue. Sure, they've only had the team around for a decade, but they're finally coming into their element as a fan base. Of course, they're nowhere near as rabid as the traditional NHL powers (original six) or even us Caniacs...mostly cause their only playoff experience was last season...and they promptly got swept out of the first round.

180193_945283287647_9604874_47507241_713255_n.jpg

Seriously...their mascot looks like a gecko with a stinger:

184279_945270558157_9604874_47506977_1601320_n.jpg

Whenever they score a goal, they have some dude dressed up in a Union uniform fire this cannon...indoors:

184959_945284460297_9604874_47507268_1470522_n.jpg

My best friend lives in Columbus and had never been to a hockey game in his life...so my wife and I spent most of the game trying to at least give him a basic understanding of the rules:

180859_945283796627_9604874_47507256_1536863_n.jpg

The score was 0-0 until the third period, when Columbus decided to finally wake up and score four goals (two by Rick Nash)...and then there was this dance towards the end of the game:

182961_945284709797_9604874_47507271_3400689_n.jpg

All in all, the fans were really nice to us, and even to the Nashville fans. Based upon a 5 star rating system, I give the experience a 3 1/2.

That's probably it for this season...stay tuned for next season, when hopefully, I'll have more chances to get out and catch more games.

I enjoy your entries, you sure your wife won't consider at least one more game....somewhere? Good to hear hockey is thriving in Columbus too.

Glad you were able to be here for Rod Brind'Amour's night. You saw the best we have to offer aside from game 7's of the playoffs.

Yeah even though I've never been there Columbus and Raleigh same similarities. Big college city, only one major league team in town, state capital, etc. I hear they have one of the best venues in the NHL.

That being said, looking at the Stanley Cup pic, I would like to say "Oh Stanley Cup, won't you come back to Raleigh for another year?" :)

Ok, this thread is now resurrected for the 2011-2012 season!

Currently deployed...again...been gone since just before the Cup finals started. However, I should be home just before Thanksgiving, so that means possible travel opportunities for the pilgrimage!

Right now, I've got tix to the Bolts vs. SwampCats in the Forum on 26 November...and tix to Stars vs. Ducks in Big D on my birthday in January...and probably will make my annual trip out to Raleigh the night before for the Canes vs. Jets.

Peace out guys...hopefully I'll have some new entries into the thread soon...once I get home!

Update: Just purchased two tix to the Canes/Jets game on 23 January. Sitting right behind the Canes bench! Happy (one-day early) birthday to me! See y'all there!

Looking at Colorado and some other western conference city sometime on a Friday-Saturday in February...will keep you guys posted.

Planning on it...

Right now I'm looking at Feb 10 going to Denver for the Avs/Canes game...then hitting Phoenix the next night for Yotes/Hawks...with Minnesota as a backup.

Edit: AIR TICKETS BOOKED! Now just waiting on decent (cheaper) game tickets to pop up on StubHub!

Edit 2: Re-worked it...now adding Anaheim to the itinerary...CANES/Ducks on Feb 8...Coyotes/Flames in Phoenix on Feb 9...CANES/Avs on Feb 10.

Well crap...I just got word my deployment is being extended three weeks...which means I am being denied Thanksgiving for the second year in a row. AARGH!

This means that there will be no pilgrimage trip to Tampa Bay. DOUBLE AARGH!

HOWEVER...because I PROMISED the Mrs. a trip to Disney last year (only to have to cancel it TWICE due to this deployment), we are still going...probably sometime in December after I FINALLY get home and am on my R&R time. Looking at the schedule for the Bolts and SwampCats, I figured out a way to knock out the SwampCats from the list...guess who now has two tix to see them vs. the Canes on December 18th? WIN!!!!

Florida

Merry Christmas everyone!

I finally got home on the 15th in time to venture with my wife down to Florida to catch the SwampCats play our boys.393847_10150450878999615_505109614_8806010_1997939776_n.jpg

The game marked Stanley C. Panther's "birthday," and was marked by appearances by several other mascots from other franchises...including the NJ Devil, the NY Islander Dragon, etc...and Stormy:

380776_10150450880309615_505109614_8806020_773657655_n.jpg

Overall, the Bank Atlantic Center was a GREAT arena...and the fans were really nice to Carolyn and I. HOWEVER, they weren't loud at all. There were maybe a dozen Caniacs in my section behind the Carolina bench...and we were as loud when the Canes scored as the Florida fans were for most of the game. I'd give these guys a 3 average...the arena offset the quiet fans.

400855_10150450882079615_505109614_8806033_1336405376_n.jpg

Next month, we will be in Raleigh for the Canes/Jets game on the 23rd...followed by Stars/Ducks in Dallas on my birthday the next night.

February marks the mass pilgrimage trip: Anaheim, Phoenix, Colorado, and Minnesota on consecutive nights!

Anaheim

Ok guys...we're now on the mega-trip of the season...starting with last night in Anaheim.

420106_10100596730474237_9604874_51111806_1547127333_n.jpg

We flew in from Vegas yesterday afternoon and met one of my former AWACS pilots (who's now stationed up at Edwards AFB, CA) for the game...and we got seats right on the glass next to the Canes bench. I was 0-3 for seeing them win on the road...hoping for the best...

Opening faceoff:

419961_10100596733787597_9604874_51111813_556916809_n.jpg

Doug and I watching the action:

398715_10100596734690787_9604874_51111814_411338049_n.jpg

The BS Overtime goal celebration:

423012_10100596746447227_9604874_51111859_1436373872_n.jpg

The arena was one of the lower-end ones I've been to so far...the food was meh...and there were quite a few really nasty fans. One of them was giving my friend crap for wearing an ESPN jersey and an IU hat...I turned around and informed him that he really doesn't have any room to talk since our respective teams are in the basements in their conferences. It took that moron five minutes to come up with the retort: "Well, at least I'm not stupid enough to buy a plane ticket to watch my crappy team lose on the road!" No bubba, it means that you're just a fair-weather idiot who doesn't love your team as much as I love my Canes! And then, after the OT goal, as we were exiting the arena, several Ducks fans came right up to my wife and I and blew these duck call whistles right in our ears...Carolyn gave them the one-fingered salute and we walked out.

All in all, their fans were quiet most of the game, just like the SwampCat fans in Sunrise...only when the scored or were making some end-roads in our zone did the noise level go up...but nowhere near as loud as RBC or the Gahden in Boston.

Anaheim would've ranked higher had it not been for the morons...even the B's fans (who I expected to be nasty) were more respectful of the opposition than these people.

Anaheim gets a solid 2 out of 5.

We're off to Burbank soon to fly to Phoenix...tonight it's the Coyotes vs. the Flames in Jobing.com Arena...pics and a report to come tomorrow (or later, depending on internet coverage).

Those are some nice seats in Anaheim. The arena looks really dark though except for the lower level.

That must be interesting sitting behind the coaches. Hearing their pep talk and whatnot. Although it doesn't really look like you can see much of the ice, or maybe it's just the picture.

Phoenix

Thursday, February 9th 2012...Phoenix Coyotes vs. Calgary Flames in Glendale, AZ.

418165_10100598315767297_9604874_51116345_34228856_n.jpg

After shaking off the disappointment (and understandable anger at the officials) of the Canes/Ducks game the night before, we headed off to the valley of the sun for a respite from ice zebra stupidity...until this moron took to the ice:

406514_10100598324898997_9604874_51116375_674526003_n.jpg

Needless to say, I spent the entire game yelling at him about how much he SUCKS!

166926_10100598314904027_9604874_51116343_216959078_n.jpg

We miss you Ray!

430595_10100598325537717_9604874_51116377_1626043069_n.jpg

Seriously, there were just as many Calgary fans in the stands as Phoenix fans...and "O Canada" sounded LOUDER than the "Star Spangled Banner."

395524_10100598326660467_9604874_51116382_1914539878_n.jpg

For the second night in a row, it went to OT...where Shane Doan scored the winner.

Overall, the fans were ok, but quiet...the arena seemed kinda "meh". The worst part where where someone came up to me and asked "Who the hell are the Chiefs and what league do they play in?" This one gets a 2 1/2 out of 5.

Denver

Friday, February 10th 2012...Carolina Hurricanes vs. Colorado Avalanche in Denver, CO

395759_10100600483887367_9604874_51122029_2077328797_n.jpg

After getting into Denver Intl and battling Friday evening rush hour traffic, we got to the Pepsi Center to take part in all the pre-game festivities...which included Military Appreciation Night. The Avs had a SWEET looking camo jersey that they wore for their pre-game skate...and Joe Sakic awarded a special one to MoH winner Salvatore Giunta before the ceremonial opening faceoff.

We had seats four rows up from the bench...and the equipment manager commented, "are you guys stalking us?" Heh...I wish!

Anyways, it was an AWESOME game going...until this happened with 1.2 freaking seconds left in OT:

As far as arenas, fanbases, and atmospheres go, this is one of the best ones. The fans were loud and we were treated with respect, even when I was cheering loudly after we scored. The arena was ROCKING from pre-game to post-game...no one got in my face after the game to taunt me (unlike those morons in Anaheim two nights prior). I'll give this a solid 4.5 out of 5...solely because it was missing an unknown "it" factor that RBC Center and the TD Bank Garden have.

At least these guys got the jersey...unlike the folks in Phoenix...

Missing you too, Matt:

One of the more pimped-out looking Zambonis:

I dunno...Michigan might have something to say about this:

Minnesota has one of the more colorful jerseys (my wife thinks they look like Christmas elves)...and their logo is awesome.

The place was average as far as fan noise was concerned (probably cause the Jackets are dead last in the NHL) and the fans were quick to give their team crap (probably cause, again, the Jackets suck...in fact, I didn't see a single Jackets fan in the stands). But the arena was really nice (heated covered walkways were a plus...cause it was 3 degrees outside)...and the food was great (get this, they serve FRIED WALLEYE...really? At least I was expecting the Mexican food in Phoenix). I'd give this one a 4 out of 5.

Ok guys...proudly announcing the latest round of the Hockey Pilgrimage (including two repeats)...six games over 7 nights next month: Raleigh on March 21st (Canes vs. Panthers), Columbus on March 23rd (Blue Jackets vs. Canes), DETROIT on the 24th (Red Wings vs. Canes), Pittsburgh on the 25th (Penguins vs. Devils), Philadelphia on the 26th (Flyers vs. Lightning), and Washington on the 27th (Capitals vs. Sabres).

Ok, so I am not giving us a prayer in Detroit...but we had better win in Columbus!
