Charlotte Checkers Information

Checkers have a solution to the lock out .....

Checkers up close and personal

So I had a great time - bit of a combination of the homliness of AAA baseball with the quality of NHL

Great! I'm working, BUT, love to have you come back on here and post your thoughts on our prospects!

Was hoping to see their 25 - one Wade Brookbank! - but he didnt suit up for the game - might go down again if we dont have some thing a bit more local to watch!

If your thinking about it - I would highly recommend it!

Fantastic news about Bowman Somebody with skill and stones..... finally!

Apparently, the Checkers picked him up during the offseason on a tryout basis. He only has a 25 game contract that is about to expire soon. More info can be found in this link...

A little more on Ellis.

Drafted 2000, 2nd round #60. Dallas.

Played almost all in the minors until 2007.

Traded to Nashville 2007.

That year started and led the NHL in save percentage for the year.

Started two years, almost losing his job 08 when a snowstorm delayed call up Pikka Rinne and Ellis got one more start and put on a show holding Chicago to one goal on 38 shots. Ellis started the rest of the year including a playoff round.

But his play did not stay sharp and he started being traded and more of a journeyman back up. His back up numbers are not terrible, but nor are they eye popping. Tampa then Anaheim. Then sports hernia surgery in March and groin tear.

Ironically he is most recently known for a Twitter account:

From Wikipedia:

On September 8, 2010, Ellis lashed out to the public, via his Twitter account expressing frustration and anger towards the 24 percent pay cut NHL players took when the 2004-05 lockout was settled with the new collective bargaining agreement, stating

"I am more stressed about money now than I was in college." He then stated "players deserve the money they get because they are specialists."[2]

Despite signing a two-year, $3 million contract with the Lightning, Ellis added, "If you lost 18% of your income would you be happy? If you don’t make a lot of money, I don’t expect you to understand." When a negative reception ensued, he told followers, "I am not holding a gun at your head to follow so do yourself a favor." He then retracted his statement released by the Lightning, stating "I am deeply sorry if I offended anyone via my recent statements on Twitter. I should have known better." Mike Russo of the Minneapolis Star Tribune commented, "No matter the point, pro athletes are better off not talking money during such turbulent times

Apparently this was exacerbated by a fake account that kept posting things like the sentiment that the poor have it better because they don't have to deal with the rising cost of top hats.

So....talk about your JR reclamation project for the Island of Misfit Toys.

Still the man has played at a very high level in the NHL at one point. Has gotten past his surgery and groin injury and is playing very well in Charlotte. I had really hoped for more from Peters this year, but so far......

Peters: 3.05 GAA, .897 Sv %

Ellis : 2.21 GAA, .934 Sv %

So we should definitely sign him. We are pretty weak at back up goalie, and if he finds even some of his 07-08 form he'll be better than anything we have ready. Plus, for him, I would think there aren't too many places with a better shot at getting at least some back up time in the NHL.

They left Dalpe and Welsh off their list. Interesting that they are skeptical about Boychuk, though I doubt they have real insight. They mention how little love our brass has given Sutter. But he's been called up as recently as the others and may well get a 4th line slot.

I still can't 100% give up on Boychuk. I know I know it's the AHL but he is tied for #3 in goals. There are a lot of serious NHL'ers below him on the goals chart. And while he's put up nice AHL numbers the last 3 years, he is blowing that pace away this year.

His goals per game average past years:

.32

.37

.29

This year:

.52

True, Bowman is right there with him and we have a glut of wingers, but he should get one more chance. If nothing else might establish some trade value.

With Dalpe's move to wing all of our best AHL prospects are wingers at this point.

Not sure Welsh is ready.

Ideally Ellis's next contract should have a clause giving us an option on him for the NHL. Right now he is our best back up option.

Unfortunately every game I have been too this season w/ the exception of the home opener they've looked terrible. They are playing better now, probably because I'm not there  We have a lot of new players on the roster this year than last year so I'm still trying to figure out who is who.

Bowman and Boychuk were both playing very well at the start of the season. Ellis is ok. Peters is still inconsistent, although he achieved a shutout recently.

Zach Boychuck is still at it.

Averaging just a hair under a point a game after 29 games. Just put up three points including a goal.

Tied for #5 in the league in scoring. A league with a bunch of NHL'ers in it.

I know it's the AHL, but if we play a shortened season it would seem within one shuttle some people up and down and that will be injuries. Yes, I have to say it through a cringe, but I would like to see Boychuck up one more time with the big club.

Quick question here regarding the game this sunday, does anyone know if the upper level will be available? For a minor league game I ain't paying 135$ for 3 tickets for lower bowl, but if the 15 dollar tickets are available upstairs I could do it. Might be the only time I see hockey in person this year... :kleenex:

Just checked the TicketMaster site, looks like sections 112-115 still have plenty of seats available. No upper level seats except single seats shown. $28.55 each including their "fee". I'm sure there's some other surcharge.

Overall checkers looked real good today fun game.

Boychuk, Dalpe, and Bowman seemed NHL ready.

Not seeing NHL's speed from Nash or Welsh.

Faulk Seems like he's hardly trying and he's still the best player on the ice.

Wonder if Ellis has a shot at back up.

Great to see hockey. And when it was mentioned that the lockout was over the reaction was pretty well all positive cheers.

It was a really good game! Great atmosphere, and Chubby is a cute mascot. Spotted JR and Kirk and Francis and Brindy up in the higher level ....checking out the players or looking to see how many 'Canes fans showed up?

It was weird seeing a player with the name Staal on his back and not be that great.

I agree Nash and Welsh don't look NHL ready.

Everyone who should be NHL ready appear ready and honestly if there was ever a time for Boychuk, Dalpe and Bowman to slip into the NHL now would be the time. A ton of NHL'ers are going to be out of game shape and they could really build some confidence in those first few weeks.

Dan Ellis looked relatively untested today. I couldn't tell ya if he's good or not.

On another note Fredrik Andersen who didn't want to play for us, didn't look very good. It just hit me at this moment that was the guy who turned us down.

I agree with you. This really is a great chance. If the Canes are smart they'll use some of these guys for energy frequently. From what I've heard from guys who went through the last partial season work stoppage, they came out strong for a couple games and then many of them hit a wall. And as you've mentioned, these guys have a bit of a jump start being game ready. Add the loss of a Ruutu, and those three guys really should get a shot.

I know Boychuk has not shown much in the NHL, but of the three he has the most pure skill.

I'm not sure why they moved Dalpe to the wing, but I'd rather have him there than Welsh or Nash.

That's pretty much what I took away from the game today. It's probably only going to be a few players that get a look in such a quick camp. Now's their time. Anybody know if the waiver rules have changed at all?

Dang Legend, I knew you would be all over Andersen, ;) Better late than never.

I guess my Staal comment was a low blow since both of ya'll removed it from the quote hahaha.

How many of ya'll had to pay attention to your chanting? Lets go Cannnheckers.

My wife wanted to hear the horn boy, but I explained if we said let's go chex it'd sound like we just enjoyed cereal entirely too much.

Tim Wallace looked great. He'll be on 4th line and pk IMO. Agree with other comments, but thought Welsh look "responsible" albeit slow. I thinkmost will stay in Charlotte.

I looked back at Andersen on the season and sadly (to me) the kid sports a .924 SV%. I think the Admirals just suck he might actually have an NHL shot at some point.

Their other goalie was like a .890 SV%

Good game! Checkers are up tempo and always looking to attack.

Shame with the Admirals. To go from Calder Cup Champions and best team in the AHL last season to near the bottom of the league this season.
