Canes Acquire Jordan Staal for 8th pick, Brandon Sutter and Dumo

Recommended Posts

Jordan staal is one of the best penalty killers in the league. He can also play On the power play. His defensive talent is as good as his offensive talents. He has played his whole career with third liners putting up some good numbers. Hopefully those numbers will improve playing with first and second line caliber players.

Sure, and if Sid or Geno go down this season with injury, who do you think gets moved up to take their spots?

Does a contract get extended when a player changes lines? Seriously, though, I have no dog in this fight. Just making it clear that the price of anyone holding the opinion that 'Staal is going to sign a long term deal with the Canes' is that it is irrevocably tied to the concept that the Canes traded Sutter, Dumoulin, and the 8th pick for a single year of Staal.

I think it makes us better now, and we didn't give up Faulk or Murphy. If we had their first pick, I'd call it a good trade for both sides and call it a day. Overpayment, perhaps, but the return...I think the return may be worth it.

Recall that earlier some were predicting we'd have to give up Ruutu, the pick, and Murphy, and that was AFTER J.Staal dropped the price by refusing the long term deal.

Forget for a moment the "we could have gotten him even cheaper" thinking, Staal is in his own way nearly as good as a Nash or Parise. Would we have given up our third center, a pick and a prospect for them?

I'm quite surprised by the negativity.

J Staal is a great player, and now that he isn't sitting in the Malkin/Crosby shadow, he is likely to explode. You guys act like your a 100% certain that we could have gotten him next year when his contract ran out, but you don't know that for certain. He did reject a contract extension, but that doesn't mean he wouldn't sign for (oh i dont know) the rangers? (Maybe you forgot M-Staal plays there????)

I felt like the trade was good for both teams in the end. Sutter is not even comparable to J-Staal, I don't understand the big hype around Sutter. He's responsible, a good two-way player, decent Pker, but under-rated? I don't see what the hype is for with Sutter. Hes a stand-up guy but he has never and will never be a top contributer to our offense (which, right now, isn't very consistent).

Giving up the 8th pick was much needed to balance the trade, knowing a Sutter/Staal trade-off is a ridiculous proposition. Even with the 8th pick, the deal was still slighty in our favor - so we give them a D-man prospect. Big whoopy.

Rutherford just got us J-Staal guys! He will be signed for a LONG time. Hes EXTREMELY young and is already a top player in the league. Now we have a Staal-Staal brotherly lineup, and who knows maybe we get Marc Staal in the future! For the first time in franchise history, we have the potential line-up that will make us an elite team in the league!

I'm having a hard time with my fescue grass. This is great news! Finally getting more Staals here. With grandkids, and probably more on the way now that Jordan's married, we need grandma and gramps Henry to permanently move here to open up a sod farm and work on the brown patch and drought resistance problem. So, this is great news!

Seriously... I'm still trying to absorb this. Sutter was one of my favorites. I don't know about Domouline. But I just feel like the Sutter thing will bite us. And still having a hard time knowing how the Staal boys, along with Muller's lineups, will work together.

Gotta continue to digest this. Gonna sleep on it now.

Truly elite talent is hard to come by in the NHL. Jordan will be that. He put up 59 points in 68 games this year (including more than a ppg in the playoffs), much of it with less than stellar wingers. Just to use Remkin patented projections, that would have been 71 points over 82 games. This year that would have made him #20 in the league in points, despite third line time, 2 points ahead of ZACH PARISE . And he plays defense.

We now have THE best second line center in hockey.

We will have this kind of productivity locked down for years (JR would not make this deal if he couldn't sign Staal).

Yes Brandon is a tough loss, and I really wanted to see what Doumo would do, and who knows what the #8 pick might have brought, but this draft was thin, and we just locked down one of the best players in the NHL, and gave up none of our top 6.

Maybe JR could have squeezed them and not given up say Doumo, but Brandon ain't putting up 70 points in the NHL. J.Staal will, next year.

If we can somehow add that winger, B.Ryan? We are there.

We won't be adding a winger of that talent through trade since we have very few assets now (without our 1st round pick and Sutter). So, I'm 98% sure we won't be getting Bobby Ryan or Rick Nash. Since we can't trade for that first line winger, we'll only be able to improve our first line by signing a UFA. There aren't any that I can think of besides Alex Semin. He can't speak English (or perhaps just a few words) and supposedly has an attitude problem (and we know JR isn't keen on Russians anyway). So whos left in free agency? Second tier wingers. It's worth bringing up that perhaps with Jordan Staal now on our team, we'll be more appealing for new players to join us (regardless of them being UFA's or not). We're just 1-2 players away from truely being a cup contender.

On a bit of a different note, aren't we still way below the cap floor? I want to say about 6 million or so. How would we reach the floor? Overpaying free agent(s)? IMO the Jordan Staal trade would have been quite a bit better had the Penguins switch first round picks with us.

Also, I'm just now reaching my limit of posts for tonight (since this is a new account). I won't be able to post till about 3 hours from now :pout:

We still could move Pits or McBain, and have two second rounders, even next year's first rounder plus a prospect. Maybe could get Ryan.

If not, we still can throw some serious money at Suter and beef up the d without losing assets.

Tlusty will be ready, pick up a third line center in FA? or try Nash?

I think

Tlusy, Staal, Jussi

Ruutu Staal Skinner

will keep us in the hunt

THEN make a move for a big time winger rental at the deadline.

There are still options. I don't think JR is done.

Maybe off topic... But there is talk of teams trying to aquire Tim Thomas for his cap hit. Pay 3M to get 5M in cap hit, with him not playing.

I sure hope you are right. I've wanted a true 1st line winger with Staal for years just as you have (I've been a long time lurker :D). I'd be thrilled if we got Rick Nash or Bobby Ryan. Sadly, I think Rick Nash is the most unlikely for us to get out of the bunch by far (I would want a Nash jersey day 1 of his trade if by some miracle we did get him). Ryan Suter would be real nice on our blue line. I think the Rangers will get Nash, and the Red Wings will get Suter though.

I'm going to look at the list of wingers that are free agents now. I'm curious who is out there.

I'm happy with the trade. It probably means Nash and Ryan were too expensive for us. Sutter is very good at what he does, but Staal is in another class. He was picked #2 after all. And he's only 24 so his ceiling is extremely high I think. I think we needed this move now. We couldn't wait another year. Plus I think JR will add another piece. Personally I hope they don't play the Staals together except on the PP.

A lot of what I'm reading is purely emotional. Brandon was a fan fav. I liked him too. But you have to give up something to get something in this league and JR did it without giving away the farm. Forget about the #8 and Douminlin. Both are unproven commodities that may have done nothing for the team. We now have one of the top 20 centers in the league. Young, proven, and talented. I'm simply shocked that anyone is questioning this.

I think the real issue is that we still need more talent to truly compete. I get that. Sutter was good, but he's no J Staal. It's a solid deal that the team HAD to make. The same folks that are bemoaning this would have been screaming if Staal went to Toronto.

You just have to deal with it. Brandon's gone and we now have a sibling team that is going to smoke PNC this season. Without this move, PNC would have been half empty and the relocation birds would have been circling. This had to happen. Dont worry, we'll sign him next year. It's simply a matter of money that we were willing to spend this year, being moved to next year. I dont see any other blockbusters this year, even though I'd like to get Suter too. I know, dreaming.

This is a key aspect to this trade. Sutter is a very good player and a fan favorite, but not somebody to market around. E & J Staal together is a marketing machine. Get ready to see the Canes on national TV a little more. I'm sure that a few more season tickets just got sold.

I think everyone wanted big depth at center by keeping Sutter while still getting Staal. Staal - Staal - Sutter centering our top 3 lines would have IMO made us serious contenders. But losing Sutter means instead of jumping straight to contender in one trade, we move to playoff picture. Which is fine with me. Besides, the free agency hasn't even started yet.

All in all, JR did what he said he would do, and for that I am grateful. Much better than nothing happening today and just drafting, although I liked Forsberg.

Most Stanley Cup champions are defined by their depth at center. Almost every team has an awesome 1-2 combo. Staal and brindy, Malkin and Crosby, and now Staal and Staal. This is a sick move. sad to see Sutter go but we did get better. a lot better!

I am calming down a little now-----didn't think of the marketing aspect. Won't be completely satisfied til

we see Jordan signing a longer term contract. We strengthened our top six--weakened the 3rd line--

and still don't have that winger for Erik. So hope we are not done.

Come on now surely you didn't expect to get him for pocket change? He's a good player...

I hope this pays dividends cause I don't like this one bit. I was at the Checkers draft party and both Shara (radio/TV guy) and Wilson (in arena MC) both said they didn't like it, and Jordan had said he WANTED to come to Carolina so why not wait until next year and sign him as a UFA and not give up anything?????

Two first rounders?? Too much. We will miss Sutter badly.

Now we shift from 3 Sutters and 2 Staals to 3 Staals and 2 Sutters... which family will win out? LOL

Whether the two skate on the same line together in Carolina remains to be seen. That will be a decision that head coach Kirk Muller will make, Rutherford said. Losing Sutter could potentially complicate this plan, since the team now lacks a proven shutdown center. But Rutherford said that if Jeremy Welsh – who the organization thinks highly of – can step into the third-line center role, the two Staal brothers could play on the same line. Eric would move to the wing, something he has done successfully in Olympic play.

I think if this was going down two years ago everyone and myself would agree. We have been waiting for our draft picks to develop for the past 5 years now and have missed the playoffs for the past 3. Waiting another year isn't an option and there was no guarantee he would have signed up with us in the off-season next year, or just run the gambit and see how high the ceiling is in the open market.

As a lifelong Pens fans even for a good return, its going to be tough adjusting without Staal.

When Crosby/Malkin were constantly down with injuries Staal was huge in carrying the team. He was a SH specialist that gave the Penguins a top PK unit, He really developed his shot last year to a new level and was taking over multiple games on his own. (50 points +15 in 60 games) Which is why he got frustrated stepping up his game so much to return to 3rd line once Crosby finally returned.

I am going to be watching a lot more Canes games just to see what he really is capable of on a consistent top line. Especially playing with his brother, who will have amazing chemistry.

This move sends the Canes into the playoffs easily.

I think the fear was if we don't sell Jordan on how awesome and family friendly the organization is now he might have gone somewhere else in a year.

Eric could tell him all he wanted to but experiencing it is quite another thing. Also if Eric has been unhappy about things bringing in his brother should almost immediately end that.

Now we have two Staal's we can send over the boards for the last 5 minutes of every game. Think about it.

These Staal's are horses like that. I'm looking forward to it.
