I love Whatifsports. I compared this year's Buffalo and last year's Carolina (Similar records. We had 1 more OT Loss than them).

Beat them in 5.

Now that makes my day.

I wonder what algorithm they use for this, anyone have any clue? As with anything simulation based repetition gives better results than one try. But enough waxing poetic about statistics here are some results from ten runs:

05-06 Canes vs 03-04 Lighting

Canes win 4 series, Lightining win six

Each series averages 6 games (with 3 seven game series, 4 six gamers, and 3 fives)

Canes win loss record 30-30

Home team wins 50% of the series

05-06 Canes vs 02-03 Devils

Canes win 4 series, Devils win six

Each series averages 5.3 games (1 seven gamer, 3 six gamers, 4 fives, and 2 sweeps, both devils wins)

Canes win loss record 22-31

Home team wins 50% of series

03-04 Lightning vs 02-03 Devils

Devils win 7, Lightning win 3

Each series averages 6.3 games (5 seven gamers, 4 six gamers, 1 sweep)

Devils win loss record 35-28

Home team win 60% of series

In summary in the series

Canes win 8 cups and go 52-61

Tampa wins 9 cups and go 58 and 65

Devils win 13 cups and go 66-50

So it looks like the Devils are the "Best Team" but then again that discounts the fact that rules were enforced after the lockout and the Lightning and Canes would probably beat that NJ team with those rules more often, and the canes would have lost more often if the obstruction was kept in.

I did a series pitting the 2000-2001 Avalanche versus the 2006-2007 Buffalo Sabres. The Avs jumped out to a 3-1 series lead, but lost two straight to the Sabres. Here's Game 7 (Imagine that this was Bourque before he won the Cup):

4:02 00-01 Avalanche Goal scored by Shjon Podein assisted by Raymond Bourque and Alex Tanguay 00-01 Avalanche 1-0

4:48 06-07 Sabres 2 minute penalty on Andrew Peters for cross check 06-07 Sabres 0-1

Period 2

1:30 06-07 Sabres 2 minute penalty on Toni Lydman for charging 06-07 Sabres 0-1

7:44 06-07 Sabres Goal scored by Daniel Briere assisted by Daniel Paille Game tied 1-1

Period 3

3:21 00-01 Avalanche 2 minute penalty on Dan Hinote for elbowing Game tied 1-1

14:47 00-01 Avalanche 2 minute penalty on Chris Dingman for cross check Game tied 1-1

16:42 06-07 Sabres Powerplay - Goal scored by Thomas Vanek assisted by Adam Mair and Henrik Tallinder 06-07 Sabres 2-1

19:17 00-01 Avalanche Goal scored by Joe Sakic assisted by Milan Hejduk

Patrick Roy returns to the net. Game tied 2-2

Period OT1

7:12 06-07 Sabres 2 minute penalty on Derek Roy for cross check Game tied 2-2

8:54 00-01 Avalanche Powerplay - Raymond Bourque shoots and scores on the rebound assisted by Joe Sakic 00-01 Avalanche 3-2

Best sports ending. EVER.

So I did the 99 Sabres vs 02 Wings and we lost 4 games to 3. Surely theres a virus <_<

Yeah, there is: two Dominik Haseks.

Or, perhaps, Hull was in the crease again.
