KHL News and Updates

Recommended Posts

As suggested in the off-season discussion thread, KHL news (and other European leagues) and updates! Since the NHL remains locked out, players are across the sea and in various leagues we can keep up with the goings on here.

The KHL Championship tournament is divided into regular season and play-offs:

  • in the regular season all teams play 56 games (four against opponents in their own division and two games against opponents from other divisions);
  • in the play-off series the best 16 teams of the regular season - eight from the Eastern Conference and eight from the Western - compete for the Gagarin Cup.

Current Standings

Highlights: AO in action with the Dynamo (And whats this one foot stays on ground???)

Malkin (Metallurg Magnitogorsk) gets a nice welcome into the KHL as well:

Its not the NHL but hey, what ever gets the hockey blood going right?

5 games into the season, coach Paul ".500" Maurice's Mettalurg Mg ranks 22nd out of 26 teams. In Malkin's and Gonchar's debut ( 1 point each) they only managed an OT loss making their record 2-2-1 OTL.

thx. that is what I meant. wonder about the quality

My understanding is that lutch usa is one of the more reliable and best quality for getting KHL jerseys in the states. Not sure how much to take that though lol.

Oskar Osala scores 2g and 1a against Avangard, now has 5g/2a in 10 games.

!

Its not like he'd playing here if stayed anyway. Guess he's probably pretty happy with his decision he made now.

Check out Mike Murphy's wonderful net minding. And it appears they don't play defense in the KHL.

That announcer must have had a mouth full of peanut butter... I couldn't understand a word he said!

Apparently there are two KHL games in the new Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY on January 19th and 20th. I might go, especially if the season hasn't started yet.

EDIT:

Also apparently KHL's Vice President Vladimir Shalaev told Sovetsky Sport, "The Barclays Center easily surpasses the New York Rangers' home at Madison Square Garden as a hockey venue... There's nothing good about [MSG]. Anyone who's been there understands that arena is no longer suited to modern hockey."

Andrew Ladd has signed with Avangard Omsk of the KHL. When you start seeing North American players head to the KHL it is difficult to be optimistic for an early settlement.

I also read that the KHL and ESPN are working out details of an agreement to broadcast KHL games on the networks live sport streaming channel. ESPN 3

Ladd has decided to stay at home.

ESPN 3 has agreed to stream KHL games.

The first game -- Lev vs. Dynamo Moscow on Oct. 9 at 1 p.m. ET -- also will air on ESPN2. Steve Levy and Barry Melrose will call the first game, which will re-air at 8 p.m. the same night on ESPN2.

Yesterday I watched the full broadcast of the KHL game on ESPN. I'm sorry, but it was a total snooze fest. -_-

I couldn't agree more.

I watched a KHL game this morning on ESPN 3 (on-line).Paul Maurice coached Metallurg Mg @ Avangard . Metallurg Mg took the lead, lost the lead, tied the game late and then lost to Avangard in OT 3-2. Just like old times.

I don't know why but this made me laugh.

I know I would be classified as a "Mo-Hater", no sense in denying it since browsing my past posts would convict me...

However, I am not sure he deserved banishment to the salt mines of Siberia...

Just how bizarre the culture difference is may be captured in this little "Holiday Video" I found on the Metallurg Magnitogorsk website.  I am not sure I understand about 50% of it...

Dear friends!

In these cold New Year's Eve hockey club "Metallurg" decided to please you a humorous promotional video, give your holiday mood and warm emotions present you the music video for the theme «We No Speak Americano».

Starring - mascot "Metallurg" Pup Timosha and masters team players - Justin Hodzhman Mats Zukkarello and Enver Lisin!

Well, this video is quite stupid. I cannot understand those parts of it with a girl and kids in some place resembling in no way either the States or Russia, either. Hockey-related parts are supposed to look funny as they imitate kids who like to dance awkwardly when this song is being played. On the whole, it's not connected with the Russian New Year or Christmas or even with Magnitogorsk. And in no way it reflects Russian culture. So don't try to determine "how bizarre the culture difference is" judging by this video. It's like finding a half amateur video on youtube and saying that it can be a mirror of the culture of the country where it was created.

Meant to post the other day since ol Mo's name came up in the O'Reilly mess as he had played for Mo's club in Russia during and after the lockout.

Looks like Mo's team made the playoff's though.  Not sure if that's because of or in spite of his skills behind the bench.  But good for him.  Wondered if he was still hanging in there at the KHL level or if he'd been demoted to a beer league.  Good to see his team is having some moderate success.

Its goofy but no goofier than half the stuff you see on American TV. Don't worry we aren't judging Russia, only Mo. Mo bashing has become a Carolina tradition no matter what continent he is coaching on.
