Myers is also making 5.5mil per year for the next 6 years.

That's a risky trade to make considering how he's played recently.  Maybe we could get Buffalo to eat some of that if we threw in McBain.

We are only falling back 3 spots, however I agree with you about it being risky. Taking a rather large cap hit for a guy that has had a good past and definitely has a promising future. Unfortunately we are asking him to play a big role in Carolina as well, I don't know if that would help him at all. Also, is it even worth McBain? I mean both guys had a bad season, McBain could as well improve... I would rather get a sure player for McBain rather than a risky guy in return for McBain.

rem, despite us both still hoping we somehow get Jones, its basically zero chance...   repeating...   the Carolina brain trust canceled its meeting the other night with Seth Jones (according to TSN).    If that is not writing on the wall, I don't know what is.

Bummer. Kill a guy's dream.

nichushkin is going to be an impact player guys . i just hope jim rutherford picks nichushkin  when its our time to pick .

if jr does not pick nich , then  jr needs to be fired . it's as simple as that folks.  you don't pass up on malkin like talent when it is up for grabs  !!!

Thanks Coastal, and I pretty much agree with everything you said, particularly about the "stepping out of our comfort zone" comment concerning Nichushkin. This is where I keep swinging back and forth. I don't want us to mess this up (go with safer pick), but I am tired of never having superstar(s) players here. As many authors have said about Nichushkin, drafting him is like "swinging for the fences." I just can't decide.

I have been too much of a coward to put up my final wish-list for forward, but here it goes:

1. Barkov

2. Lindholm

3. Nichushkin

4. Monahan

5. Drouin

Nichushkin and Lindholm keep swapping for me for the reason stated above. I excluded MacKinnon as well, and I haven't looked into Jones enough to form an opinion. Still, if he is there we probably have to take him, he does look like a unique talent. Also, this is no disrespect to Monahan or Drouin, I will fully support whoever we pick and I would be excited to have either player here.

The amazing thing to me is the lack of love for Drouin (and not just here) by Canes fans, other sites/fans would probably think we are crazy or stupid (or both). For those who are not Canes fans, they are probably oblivious to our frustration over small, skilled forwards not panning out as anticipated.

Anyway, now that this is almost over I just wanted to say thanks to everyone for their opinions and insight. I have been ill so discussing this stuff really helps pass the time/takes my mind off of things (sorry for the long posts). I have enjoyed it, and this is the first time I have even remotely studied the draft so I can't wait until tomorrow. Remember the NHL network kicks things off tonight with a scouting combine review and mock draft show.

Thanks again. Kyrule, hope you are feeling better, thanks for all the insight, maybe see ya in chat.. Thanks!

@TSNRyanRishaug: Lots of chatter on the floor about pick number five. Sounds like its likely being moved.

I think I will now be shocked if JR keeps the pick.

What if Canes move down to 8, & pick up Myers, or  Pysyk...then trade #8 & McBain to the leafs for Phaneuf, & #21.

Ok, wait I think I was daydreaming for a minute.

Everyone is looking to move up.  Maybe our 1st pick is dealt a couple of times.  Maybe a deal with Buffalo then a deal with Toronto.  I cant see a move from 5th to 21st.  A deal to 8th then 21st while getting two roster players would be legit.  Maybe pick up Fucale.  We haven't picked up a goalie in a while and we need one.

Man you beat me to it.  Maybe Reilly and a 3rd line winger and the 21st for McBain and the 8th.  Kulemin maybe.  He is a hitter and puts up decent points for a 3rd liner.

Maybe I'm not dreaming...I could see it. If Buffalo wants Nich, & Toronto wants Domi!

It's interesting to me how our natural tendency is to optimistically project a prospect as becoming "another XXXXX" based on a few similarities.  And usually the projection is towards someone at the very top end of the prospect's potential.  E.g., you see Nich & think "he could be another Malkin".  Others see Drouin and think "he could be another Datsyuk".   Too bad it rarely works out that way . . .

Yea if we can get Myers and 8th for the 5th then do it.  Then could get a young Dman like Reilly and then a 3rd liner like Kulemin and the 21st for the 8th and McBain.  We would have a sick weekend to me.

Tyler for the Pens?

Source?

Just saw it on NHL network.

They just announced it on the NHL video of the draft.  (I watching the braves game, so I have to stream the draft).

Yea for the 5th pick.  The discussion could open back up if they still want to get back into the top 10 and Reilly is available.
