Who should stay and who should go for next year

Recommended Posts

I think Pitkanen is the no-brainer pick. He's sucking up a lot of salary for the return we get out of him. I really have a hard time fathoming the 4.5 mil we drop on him yearly. I think moving him and McBain's contracts is the biggest key to getting some flexibility in the defense for next season. They struggled all year to find someone to play wing on Jordan's line last year...they finally found it when Ruutu returned. Pitkanen, when he returned, continued to be inconsistent. He should be moved.

Totally agree. We win more games when Pits is out.

Skinner would fetch us a great defensemen.

Skinner is a fan favorite 20 year old top six forward who is locked up long term. He's not going anywhere.

+1,

Girls love him.  Not going anywhere, anytime.  Forget that.  Think of other players to trade.

I dunno guys...if JR can fetch a great deal for Skins, before his next concussion takes effect, I think he'd jump on it.  JR has shown he won't get anyone willing to defend Jeff on the ice...so why take the risk of a high-valued asset taking more cheap shots and ending his career before he turns 25?

Skinner has concussion problems and is a serious risk.  He would fetch us a top notch d man.  Might as well get something good for him while his value is high.  I fear having concussions this early is going to result in a short career for the kid.  Hence why I would trade him.

Rosey isn't 20 years old or a 30 goal scorer. I love Larose, too...but comparing him to Skinner is just silly. As is the notion we should trade him.

I said this in another thread so I will say it here to. I would entertain trading skinner to get Druoin. I think in the end it would be well worth it. Especially if they wanted to use Skinner as a center man. I think Nash will fill the third line center role perfectly with the right off season workout, and knowing he is gonna play our 3rd line center man. Druoin would play with Staal and Ruutu and make that line just lethal. Also get rid of Joni for another defenseman. We don't need him.

Joni isn't getting dealt unless some team somewhere really wants him. He has no value right now. If we dont want his salary hit next year, buy him out. I don't know if anyone would want him, he's proven himself to be injury prone. No one likes injury prone defensemen.

As for Skinner, he's not going to get dealt anytime soon. It might make sense, it might bring in a huge return, but it's not how JR operates. Especially after his extension. Skinner has a few more years of developing to do, and the fact that he's this good before he's filled out is pretty amazing. JR refused to trade Skinner in the Nash deal BEFORE his extension, who do you think he'd consider trading him for WITH the extension? Exactly, Skinner is staying put.

So his inability to stay healthy at a young age is not at all concerning? He has Eric Lindros written all over him.

Those who are saying JR should go need to re-evaluate their thinking lol.  He is a good GM, and has done more with less money than most.  I mean he landed us JStaal and Semin for heavens sake!  We have never had that kind of talent.  The only thing JR is at fault with any of this is his lack of pursuit on our defensive end and his constant abuse of recycling players/coaches.

First and foremost, Mueller has got to go.  I've heard a lot of excuses about him not having a full training camp but look what Adam Oates has done with the Capitals.  Mueller has had many more games than Oates to get this team on the right track, and he simply has failed.  I am BEYOND confused as to why JR hasn't given him the boot.  It's time to get rid of him NOW.  We do not want to waste the 2013/2014 season because we failed to recognize that Muller can't make it at this level right now.

I'm also surprised Dwyer has been thrown under the bus by you people.  He had good numbers leading up to the complete crash of the team mid-season; he brought his speed and work ethic consistently.  He would be a fine addition to an energy based 3rd or 4th line without question next season.

As for players...  JR needs to sit down with Gleason and let him know he had a bad season.  He can't expect to wear the A with a performance like he had.  He needs to put on more muscle and play that physical game we expect out of him.  Corvo obviously needs to be axed.  His defensive liability is WAY too high compared to his offensive capabilities.  McBain also needs to be traded or sent down to the AHL.  I admire his attempt at fighting through adversity, but he has been bad all season.  Harrison also had a weak season with his lack of physicality in front of the net and around the boards.  He needs to be traded or put on a third line pairing.  He has way too much ice-time.  We don't need MAB, and never did.  Yes our powerplay was bad but we didn't need to add another defensive liability to an already terrible d-core.  We also need to figure out what to do with Pits.  Either trade him or don't trade him, but the indecisiveness on what to do with him has got to end.  How can you expect a player to flourish when he isn't in a comfort zone with the team and management.  I personally think he's a diamond in the rough and has an awesome ability to move the puck, and can eat up huge ice time.

Next season I would like to see Gleason-Faulk as our first d line and Harrison-Bellemore as our third with Sangs as a 7th optional.  Those calling for murphy to play next season need to stop.  He's not ready, and he won't be for a few years.  If we can trade Pits or redefine his role, it will stamp out our second pairing with a solid free agent grab in the off-season.

Hopeful Line-up for next season:

Semin-EStaal-Tlusty

Skinner-JStaal-Ruutu

??-Nash-Dwyer

Westgarth-??-Wallace

Gleason-Faulk

Pits-???

Harrison-Bellemore

LaRose has to go.  I love him, but Rosey isn't the same guy we had when we won the cup.

Westgarth should stay.  We need a good enforcer.  We also need him to bang bodies MUCH more next season, or he should go.

Wallace would feature nicely with Westy on a hard checking 4th line.

We need a nice compliment for Nash and Dwyer to find success.  Someone with dishing capabilities.

We can talk about this all day, but the major point is to find a new head coach.  THERE ARE OPTIONS OUT THERE!  We neeeeeeeeeeeeed to get a new coach.  Mueller hasn't worked.

Mueller has had basically just one season as a head coach. You almost NEVER fire a guy after 1 season.

I don't buy the training camp excuse, but you have to give a guy at least 2 - 3 seasons.

The more time I think about this I really think we shop skinner for a first this year. If we could get a barkov or nischkinun and pick up a nurse or other damn that would be worth the trade right there. Face it he is not going to fit in the second line and Nash will be our 3rd line center. I guarantee you they told him to get bigger and to work on his face offs. The playoffs in Charlotte will help this kid greatly especially since he will be centering there top line. Ok now tell me I'm crazy or wrong

Not sure if I agree with this and the similar comments.  We need to remember last year at this time we had Brandon Sutter who I would not have thought was going anywhere but now is in Pittsburgh.  Sutter was an 11th overall pick versus Skinner being 7th.  They both brought different things to the team that is hard to measure in just stats.

Interestingly too is that Sutter did have a concussion early on also.

For the right deal I would think JR would trade anyone not named Staal, Semin, Ward, or Faulk.

You are crazy and wrong lol.

He is a scoring machine and will only, as time goes on, get better in his all around game.  Trading him would be a huge huge mistake.

He sure proved that he was a scoring machine this season with his solid 2-way play.  he is very responsible in his own end too!!

Who Should Stay

Staal                   Ruutu                    Westgarth

Staal                    Skinner                  Brent

Tlusty                  Semin                 Wallace

Faulk                   Harrison

Who Should Go

Larose                   Gleason               Corvo

McBain                  Sangs                  Peters

Players on the Bubble

Joni                       Dwyer                  Nash

In my opinion, the main concern with this team is lack of a true checking line.  Every elite team has at least one guy to bang some bodies and still have some offensive capability.  We need a guy who can rotate in between 2nd/3rd line who plays physical.  We could also use a guy strictly for 3rd line who's big and can defend (poni would look real good right now) to replace Larose.

The defense needs an overhaul that i don't believe will happen.  JR loves our top 4 defensemen, and has been too lazy to solve the problem.  Corvo played 10x better than i thought he would, but he doesn't hit and can't clear the puck.  McBain is the most likely to be moved, we'll see.  Harrison could be a bit more aggressive.

I'd be in the market for a backup goalie depending on how the defense turs out.  If they can't do anything on D, i would definitely be looking for a former starter type backup who could play 20-30 games.  If they won't shell out money for D, they should shell out money for G.

Bottom line is this team needs a lot of work, and we could be at least a playoff team withe at least one or two moves, but i don't think this organization will make the RIGHT moves this offseason.  Hopefully i'm wrong.

I read that to mean you have little to no confidence in Mr. Rutherford as a GM.

I don't disagree that we need to be able to play more physical, I think the problem with the third line though, is that all it did was check. Most of the really good teams get scoring from that third line. That's what Muller has wanted from the beginning. That's what led to the (ill-advised) move of Jussi to the third center. But that scoring did not happen. Then when the second line misfired there was very little production from the bottom 9.

I guess that's why Trip and John keep pumping Matt Cooke's tires up. A guy that can do both. Still wondering why they went sooo far out of their way at the end to prop up Cooke. :letssee:

I'll say i'll believe it when i see it.  I was encouraged by JR in his presser, it sounds like he's ready to do things he's not used to.  But he's always complained about the difficulties of getting defensemen.  If he can get 2 or 3 defensemen THAT FILLS A VOID, then i'll be as impressed as i was last offseason

Still think we should keep Timmy G...he had a bit of a disappointing season, but I think he's part of the solution, and not the problem itself.
