2013-14 In-Season Canes News, Updates and Talk

Chicken Little Syndrome anyone? I'm sure this type of tripe could be written about any one of 29 other teams, if one could fabricate the right scenario!

Interesting article about our future but do not read if you are prone to getting depressed. http://www.rantsports.com/nhl/2013/09/30/why-2016-could-be-the-apocalypse-for-the-carolina-hurricanes/

And I stopped reading that SportsRant article when I got to the part where they claim Faulk has done nothing but underperformed and hasn't shown any leadership. Riiiiight. Author lost all credibility to me right there.

He also said Staal played in the 2002 finals.  As I recall, he was picked 2nd overall in the 2003 draft, just a little over a year after we lost to Detroit.  The author probably couldn't pick a Hurricanes jersey out of a line-up of MLB jerseys.

The latest from Chip

Canes owner Peter Karmanos said Murphy move was cap-related. Would be back soon.

In talking about roster moves, Canes GM Jim Rutherford said: "What the roster is today may not be what it is for opening night."

Rutherford said Canes "keeping fingers crossed" on having Semin, Lindholm available for opener. Gleason, Ruutu won't play.

Chip Alexander @ice_chip 2m

On Dvorak, Rutherford said talks continue, there remains interest. "By tomorrow we will know the direction that it's going."

Its getting hard to keep up

I concur. This could be written about any team if you look 3-4 years out depending on existing contracts. The author was obviously not a cane fan as he blasted Rutherford and several players,  Just thought it was a read from a different angle.

Yes, step back from the ledge.

I will say this. Bellemore has looked good. I didn't think he was the problem last year either.

I am sick of concussions, but I am comfortable with Bellemore.

You all know I'm a Murphyphile, but I like using him as a specialist at first.

At this point the one guy I want back most is Semin. W/Ruutu out we are already slotting guys up, Semin also and the line up is more anemic still.

Think they may dress 7 d-men and sit one of your 4th liners (or an injured Lindholm). IMO may see Murphy as the 7th d-man for offensive situations like PP. Otherwise Komi may pair with Harrison.

People said the Canes got pushed around last season. This lineup is recipe for disaster.

You can't push what you can't catch! ;) Ok, all joking aside, I agree, but none of the healthy extras are going to help.  Westgarth is as useful as road cone, Corrente is AHL caliber, and Komisarek is, well Komisarek.

Well hybrid icing was just approved and will start tomorrow.

Joni might wish they had thought of that last year.

So, remind me of the rules again.

NHL.com

For the purpose of interpretation of the rule, there are two judgments required for "icing the puck". The Linesman must first determine that the puck will cross the goal line. Once the Linesman determines that the puck will cross the goal line, icing is completed upon the determination as to which player (attacking or defending) would first touch the puck. This decision by the Linesman will be made the instant the first player reaches the end zone face-off dots with the player's skate being the determining factor. Should the puck be shot down the ice in such a manner that it travels around the boards and/or back towards the end zone face-off dots, the same procedure shall be in effect in that the Linesman shall determine within a similar distance as to who will have touched the puck first."

For clarification, the determining factor is which player would first touch the puck, not which player would first reach the end zone face-off dots.

If the race for the puck is too close to determine by the time the first Player reaches the end zone face-off dots, icing shall be called.

The puck striking or deflecting off an official does not automatically nullify a potential icing.

Since the author lists Eric Staal as playing on the 2002 SCF team, I take it with a grain of salt.  And a lime.  And a bottle of Patron.

Staal played with the Hurricanes in both the 2002 and 2006 Stanley Cup Finals, as well as the 2009 Eastern

This is the stupidest article I have ever read. Dead *edit* serious. Players age, teams sign new players, it's not like the Hurricanes will drop down to the AHL or anything. Completely ignorant.

I actually went to the PNC arena today to buy my fiance' a canes shirt(I am newly engaged). I couldn't help but walk in and watch the team practice. Kirk was running offensive zone drills. I forgot how big Jordan Staal is. Has he put on some size this off season because he looks freaking HUGE!!! The injury bug has already hit and the season isn't even underway! Semin, Gleason. Skinner, Pitkanen, Ruutu, Lindholm. Kill me now please.

just got back from the canes corner, where my friend continues to have the devil's own luck getting a wristband.

He sounded like he was feeling good and ready to go for Friday.

Anecdotal aside, when asked about the Taylor Swift picture, he mentioned that she really didn't seem to have a clue who he was, and at one point she asked if he wanted her to sign his jersey and give it back to him. Someone in her crew asked him to sign a puck and a jersey for her. Also, Dalpe was there on a ticket originally intended for Jeff's sister.

Thusly, someone with Taylor Swift's crew is messing with the hockey gods.

Believe it or not, but J.Staal reported to camp lighter then last year by 12 pounds, maybe shedding off a bit of the lockout blubber this past summer :D

To me, we look a lot less soft than previous years, so I don't know what you're looking at Ronnie. We actually have a defensive looking defense. And can we not judge players before we even see them play, e.g. Komisarek? I think we're fine. And I'm glad I called the Murphy situation.

Also, I'm curious to see who gets Gleason's 'A' in his absence. Semin donned it during the pre-season, that would be my guess.

Think we can get her to take a pic with everybody else in the Metropolitan Division? ;)

I think it'll be a Dman. Maybe even Faulk since it's safe to say he'll be wearing a letter one day.

Every picture I see of the new uniform, I like them less. They have gone from a very distinctive look to a very generic look. I know this is a minor complaint, but bring back the warning flags!
