E Staal injured....3rd degree knee sprain/no surgery planned

Recommended Posts

so hes "banned" for the rest of a meaningless tournament?  i think the punishment (whatever it would have been) should have started next regular season.

It looks like he could get a further suspension if I'm reading the IIHF statement correctly.

Any additional suspension, exceeding the duration of the tournament, will be handled by the disciplinary panel to the IIHF Disciplinary Committee.

Really? The last time anyone wearing a Hurricane uniform got even for a bad hit was............? Let's hope Ruu hips are healthy next season.

Exactly what I was thinking. And of all people that crybaby Edler? Who gathers the media up to complain about officiating and embellishment in regards to their series with San Jose? I hope this moron gets shunned into the KHL or something. And this looks serious, when has any of us seen Eric in that pain? He's only been injured enough to stop playing once or twice in his career so far. So seeing him get dropped by a bum in Edler by one of the dirtier plays in the game, it stirs some serious emotions. He may be lucky and not have as serious an injury as it appears, but I'm going to expect the worst and hope for the best. Just hope this doesn't somehow de-rail JR's quest for a new defense.

No point of getting all worked up until Eric has the MRI and we're told how bad it is. No one will know until then, not even the Dr and training staff.

I am not an MD or anything---and I understand JR wants our medical team to evaluate

him and make a public diagnosis........but I am sure he has had some sort of exam or evaluation

procedure in Sweden on his leg, to clear him for the flight, and to know what was needed

to stabilize the leg and prevent further injury. So JR may have a little prior knowledge of the

injury extent.( He is not going to take any chances with his $7-8 mil dollar man ) Just thinking

logically.

The first reports said he was to have an MRI this morning in Sweden but that was either wrong or something changed overnight and instead is flying home and having the MRI in Raleigh on Saturday.

Will Eric be going to Rex for this MRI?

I will not be in the area, but if I were, I'd totally want to go stand outside with a group of fellow caniacs to cheer and wish him the best.

I dunno, if I was gimping into a hospital being cheered would seem awkward.

But I'm not a superstar either so not something I have to think about :D

. This is a very bad idea. I am a healthcare provider, and it would not be well received by the staff. And you'd probably be escorted away by campus security. Good thought though!

He probably just had x-rays to see if there was any bone damage or dislocation; had a preliminary physical manipulation exam. and then had it immobilized for the trip home. He'll need the MRI to evaluate the soft tissue damage (which is not visible on an x-ray), like ligaments, tendons, cartilage/meniscus.

Hate MRIs.  Due to my genetic disorder I have had far too many of them.  The good thing is the Canes have the $$ to hire the best to take care of the injury

Eric Staal Diagnosed with Third-Degree MCL Sprain More

a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) test on team captain Eric Staal's right knee revealed a third-degree sprain of the medial collateral ligament (MCL). Surgery will not be required to repair the ligament, and Staal’s rehabilitation should last three months. It is expected that he will be healthy and ready to play to start the 2013-14 season.

Eric Staal Diagnosed with Third-Degree MCL Sprain More

Let me just say, that first, it is terrible that this happened.

That said, given the grim look of the video and expectations, and the phrase "career-ending" having been tossed in the ring, the fact that Eric will be ready to start the season next year is  .

Now JR can exhale and refocus on fixing the defense.

He'll certainly be focused this entire off season.  He has a long tough summer ahead but he'll get it done.

Guess JR will not be looking to bring Edler on-board for the Defense!!!!

The injury is bad enough but in this case it certainly could have been a lot worse. I hate knee injuries. A summer of rest and rehab should take care of this. In no way should this lessen the impact of the hit. Elder should get further disciplinary punishment. It was a stupid and dangerous play.

Terrible that this happened-----given all that could have happened, this is

good news !  RRR Eric. (rest, relax and rehab)

How will the NHL justify further punishment? This was not a league matter.   Let the players handle it.
