Report: Toronto, Seattle, Quebec City to join Vegas in 2017 NHL expansion - SI

Recommended Posts

In spite of the denials I suspect there is some validity to the report. I expect the speculation will build over the next couple of seasons until a decision is made. I can see adding 2 teams but 4 teams seems a bit much.

I remember when a retired Mickey Mantle and Willie Mays were banned from making appearances at baseball games and related functions because they made an on stage appearance at a gambling casino. Now Vegas is rumored to be a leading candidate for a NHL Pro franchise. Times they have changed.

Hmm, you've got to think the league would balance the East and West as part of any expansion. Clearly Vegas and Seattle would go out west, but Quebec and Toronto would have to be in the east.  Who might they move west to balance things?.

You have to wonder if 2 of the 4 teams won't be relocation teams. The rumors continue to swirl around the Florida Panthers possible relocation.

HA! After looking at the teams again I just swung back here to post that exact same question, lol.

Seemed kinda obvious after they realigned the divisions for last season that there was more to come.  Leaving open 2 spots in the West was kinda glaring.  Interesting that they're leaking all the info right now.  I dont feel comfortable talking about relo teams, the Canes have the fan base and support but unfortunately being a subpar team the past several years has created so much apathy.   Canes are not safe, winning cures all.

as to existing teams being relocated, the Kitty Kats have to top that list.  When an info-mercial can get better ratings than a televised game that is a thin fan base

I think Toronto would be interesting, lot's of hockey fans but mostly loyal Leaf fans who have been crushed for years. If a already established team was walking into town I could see it working. But an expansion team that'll take years to really get off the ground I just don't see working it would be a side show to the Leafs.

Vegas.... ugh....speaking of sideshows.

They can support a minor league team(I have a Las Vegas Wranglers jersey), but I don't know if they can support NHL hockey.  And the Leafs will never allow a 2nd Toronto team.

Seattle and Quebec have been rumored for the past few years...Vegas?  No way!  That town is so fickle, the Wranglers actually had to fold for a few seasons due to crappy attendance and no location to play their games (they played at the Orleans arena the past few seasons).  Toronto shouldn't be allowed a 2nd franchise when Hamilton has been begging for one and gets the shaft repeatedly.

On the Dan Patrick show this morning, Dan said he had a source (who he won't name) that says the Las Vegas team is almost certainly a done deal.  He also mentioned that two teams to look out for as far as relocation for these 4 new teams......the Coyotes and unfortunately, the Canes.

I've got to believe that Florida is by far the #1 relocation probability.  After that, seems like the next most likely choices are Arizona, Columbus, and the Canes. :(  Hard to say without knowing teams financials, though.

You have to think Florida is the number one candidate to relocate.

NBC Sports Pro Hockey Talk

“The arena and the team have lost a significant amount of money year over year for the last 10-plus years and the current business model is not sustainable,” Cifu said.

The story adds Broward County mayor Barbara Sharief and the county have hired a consultant who is looking into the possibility of allowing the Panthers out of their arena lease and the opportunity to relocate.

The results of that report are expected in October.

Even so I expect whenever relocation is discussed the Canes will be part of the conversation. Lets hope its just empty talk.

The more I read the more I get the feeling that this is just speculation that the media has taken off with.

Read this today.  Take it for what it is worth.

  • Luke DeCock: “Don’t work yourself up over” Dan Patrick’s speculation about the Hurricanes moving to Las Vegas.
  • Luke DeCock of the Raleigh News & Observer: Hurricanes Peter Karmanos is looking to sell chucks of the team to local investors, but he’s been more involved with the team and not less even as he searches for investors. The Hurricanes arena lease gives them the incentive to remain as they control the arena. Relocating to Vegas and not through expansion would cost the owners money.
  • Dan Patrick: From a financial source, it’s a done deal and there will be a team in Las Vegas by 2016. Question being, will it be an expansion team or by relocation. Patrick then says that two relocation candidates are the Coyotes (there is a clause in their deal that the NHL can step in if they are losing “x” amount of money) and the Hurricanes. Owner Peter Karmanos is reportedly asking for an exorbitant amount of money for the team.  The owners would prefer a expansion as they would get more money.

Well financially, Yotes and Panthers are the weakest., plus the Panthers owner has made some noise about the losses.  On the other had, PK has moved the team before.....

All he big casinos will buy tickets for giveaways and comps. And I would bet Vegas would be willing to fund an arena for a NHL team rather than a minor league team, Rumor has MGM and a partner footing the cost of an arena.  Hamilton will be like the Islanders, moving to the big city as soon as possible.
