2014 Training Camp and Exibition Games

The game stream is only going to be available in Canes viewing area? That's rather unfortunate for those of us that live elsewhere...

?? Do you mean televised or streamed over the internet?  I haven't heard that it will be televised and I don't know how they would restrict access to the internet stream to any particular geographic area; seems like everyone should have access to that.

I'm referring the to streaming via the website. From Michael Smith's blog on the home page:

Exciting news for those in the Hurricanes viewing area that can’t make it to tonight’s game: CarolinaHurricanes.com will be live streaming with John Forslund and Tripp Tracy on the call. As always, you can listen to the game on 99.9 FM The Fan and follow along on Twitter with these accounts: @NHLCanes@Canes_Gameday and@MSmithCanes.

Peters said yesterday, or the day before, nothing has been decided on the bottom two pairs on D, and he also said it was frustrating that Murphy hasn't exactly stepped up to the plate and taken one of those spots as of yet.  Paraphrasing of course.

From the practices and games I've seen so far, I would say that's spot on.

Look, I'm not expert, but I didn't just fall off the turnip truck either.  If this D isn't going to be an issue, something better change quickly.

I'd love to see a link to that, because Maniscalco also said something about Murphy "not necessarily always making a positive impression" in the post-game after Columbus - a game Murphy didn't even play in - in discussing the Peter's approach to assessing the D corps. Frankly, I just don't see it.

Peters also said as camp started that he wanted to give Murph a shot to QB the PP. So far, in three preseason games, here's the line on Murph:

9/21 v. Columbus: 23:12 TOI, one assist (on the PP) and even +/-

9/24 v. Islanders:   16:42 TOI, one goal and one assist (both on the PP) and -1

9/30 v. Blues:        22:38 TOI, one goal (even strength) and +1

So in three games Murphy is even on the +/- and has four points, three on the PP. Perhaps Peters is just trying to push the kid harder, because I don't see how that is anything less than impressive.

That's weird. If anything, you'd think they'd black it out in the local area rather than the other way around.  I wonder if MS just phrased it awkwardly rather than it actually being blocked for some internet viewers?  But even if so, there are alternatives.  Check your private messages.

Like you mentioned, perhaps he is only trying to push him harder, but that's not what it sounded like to me.

The Columbus feed the other night was only in the Bluejackets viewing area. I suspect but don't know if they are restricting access by your Inet providers zip location. It does seem odd unless their testing a way to stream games within each teams dominate area. Now if I was a cynic (I am) I would ponder that if you could stream to viewers only in each teams home area you could place a fee on the stream. The fee would go to the home team and the blackout would protect other teams paid streams. They would still need to protect their Tv affiliate somehow but with people leaving paid cable they will have to jump into the streaming game somehow.

Just thinking out loud. Probable nothing to it at all

That's weird. I had the CBJs game feed (I live in NC) and I thought it was by going through the CBJs home site.  But maybe I got it through my "alternate" online source.

If CanesVision has anything to do with hosting the stream, be prepared for a lot of people to have issues with it.  I can't watch anything they produce, and I know tons of people who can't either.

When are they going to get their act together?  On most every other team site, you have choices for stream quality.  We seem to be one of the only teams that don't offer that.

Lake, PM me your stream source if you don't mind, just in case.

It would appear that we like our group.

Peters didn't sound exactly enthusiastic.  I feel bad him having to play the hand he's been dealt at this point.

I will say this on a positive note. Rask.

If the guy keeps bringing it, we might get through this offensively, and when J. gets back we could be in really good shape down the middle.

It is very very refreshing to see a guy EMERGE from our AHL system and clearly show some stuff.

BTW it is also a bit of vindication on our recent drafting. If McGinn develops this year (he will) then we'll have a pretty good run of second rounders recently (not even counting DiGiuseppe).

Also the article by Luke on Rask's emergence does mention the "Murphy not grabbing the ring" thing Coastal mentioned:

Contrast Rask’s situation to that of Ryan Murphy, the team’s first-round draft pick in 2011. The Hurricanes were dying for Murphy to step up and claim a spot among the team’s top six defensemen as a power-play specialist. That competition, a frustrated Peters said Thursday, remains open – and he wants a resolution “sooner rather than later.”

“Murph’s a puck guy who runs a power play,” Peters said. “That’s what he did as a junior, that’s what he did for Canada in the world junior tournament, that’s why he got drafted in the first round. So it’s time. For me, it’s time.”

While I share everyone's optimism regarding Rask, I hope we keep in mind that it's based on a couple of preseason games.  I'm not trying to downplay his prospects; rather I don't think it's fair to him to expect him to necessarily continue at the same pace on a regular season NHL 2nd line.  If he can just hold down the fort for a couple of months and then continue his development over the next year or 2 I'll be thrilled.

:crossfingers:

Oh yeah, it wasn't a matter of not believing you, Coastal, I just wanted hear what he said, because I'm assuming Maniscalco was repeating what he heard. I've been really impressed with Murph's camp so far, and he sure seems to have homed in on Peters' stated desire for him to be a leader on the PP. There is no question the kid is O-minded, but with his size and speed I think he can afford to be.

Thanks Rem. So these comments thicken the confusion for me, given his pre-season performance on the PP in game situations. Maybe Peters just doesn't fully appreciate how badly the PP has sucked for the past several seasons!

Top-shelf, I know you weren't saying you didn't believe me, but with so much stuff that's said, by fans and coaches alike, it's much better to have a link. Anyway, thanks to Rem for digging up that comment that was repeated in Luke's article.

On Rask, I'm with you Lake, we have to keep in perspective he's still just a kid, and that's a big responsibility to play on an NHL second line in real games.  I hope he continues to improve.

Nice to hear John's commentary while watching a game again, been too long.

Too bad to see Larose out so quick in those circumstances, would have liked to see what he is still capable of bringing over the full course of a game.

This is the first pre-season game I've watched. The defense looks way more aggressive than last season.

Yeah I had only caught parts of the previous few games. This team looks fast, relentless, and I love how the D are stepping up into the play. There's always risks with that and we will have to see how some of the young guys hold their own against top competition over the course of the season, but overall Peters seems a lot better at matching situations and strategies to the players strengths. More of a round hole/round peg finally, if you will.

Welcome back.  Oh,and see you in a couple of weeks.  I'll be chasing ducks and geese in the Quill Lakes area.  Then moving down around Old Wives Lake for some partridge.
