Race to the Bottom (a.k.a. the McDavid/ Eichel Sweepstake)

Recommended Posts

Don't look now but it looks like there's a very good chance Buffalo may be playing themselves out of their own pick as a lottery entry for McDavid/ Eichel.  They've won 8 of their last 11, including wins over the Bolts, Sharks, Kings, and Habs (twice).  Who would have guessed that the 1st round pick they got from NJ last season might end up being their best chance at one of next years draft star Yutes?

Unfortunately( :P?) for us Canes fans, Edmonton still looks like they'll be very hard to catch in any race to the bottom. And from the sound of things it looks like Arizona might be very close to jumping into the race with both feet.

That's why key strategic personel management is key.

Move E. Move say, Ward? (He is playing so well though....), move Tlusty....etc.

Not only can we compile picks but the remaining team will stay near the bottom while playing to win (see October).

I know that tank talk is toxic. But a couple of extra first rounders to go with McDavid....over pay a UFA to come in (only way to get them) that could turn things fairly fast....

We still have a shot if we can land in the bottom 3. What the heck it's a lottery.Like the Kentucky Derby the favorite rarely wins.

Non-Playoff Team

(Fewest Pts. to Most)

New Draft Lottery Odds  Odds Under Former Allocation

1. 20.0%                         25.0%

2 13.5%                          18.8%

3 11.5%                          14.2%

The difference this year being that the bottom team is guaranteed a "generational player" since they can only slide one spot and both McDavid and Eichel are available.  The Sporting News Canada has the two yutes ranked as even at this point.

Especially after last game, I think "Canes Luck" is an even longer shot than the odds might indicate

Good point. We helped our cause today by the waxing by Philly. Khudini lit up like a Christmas tree.

Thing is that the #29 team has only a 1/3 chance of getting EITHER guy.

Going for #30 and coming up one short has a 2/3 chance of all the pain, but missing the golden prize.

This is why,"losing culture" concerns will lose to some form of tank with a few teams and this is the exact year that successful extreme strategic roster moves could pay off big, but you've got to win the race down.
