Official Trade Deadline, Re-signing, Trade Talk "Maybe it's really a fire sale" thread

Recommended Posts

OK now I get it, if they don't make it the pick is in two years.

Well the way they're playing it looks pretty likely they'll make it, and since they'll proably make it next year too and a cup hangover would hit more this year, and we want that dang pick in this, deepest of drafts....yes the Kings must make the playoffs, then lose to Nasville or Anaheiam, we pick around #18.

Good haul on Sekera. Basically a 1st and a 2nd that's a right shot defenseman that's a year more developed. Don't know much about him, but he's 19, so he's got a lot of developing to do.

All true but Kingston as a team is really struggling. He's -24 with 7 goals and 22 helpers in 61 games this year; with that kind of minus rating let's hope it's b/c he's playing big minutes in all situations. Seven goals as a D-man on a bad team suggests to me he's a PP guy, and very likely a PK guy too.

I like this line.

Despite the struggles he has endured this year though, he remains a potentially game-breaking and dynamic defensemen. His hockey sense and puck-moving ability are still some of the best in the Kings system at the highest level.

It then goes on to say he's far from realizing that, but he's a dman with major upside, which is nice. Hockey's Future has him listed with major talent, but only a D on likely to succeed. Still, that seems like a reasonable chance to take on a guy who is kind of a throw in player.

And I'll just add that if they are trying to get him more focused on D, RF could be looking at him as a possible convert to offense.

Okay, off topic, but I've been fighting the urge to post this since it went up on Monday.

With that wig Timmy is pictured wearing at Casino Night, the headline should not be "Ahoy Matey."

It should be "Oy vey, Matey"!!

We got a hell of a deal with the Sekera trade. Even if LA makes it, I think they're one and done, so we could have a high teens pick

I know Francis is focusing on UFA's, but he pulled the trigger on these two very fast, and still has a few days to listen to other offers on non UFA's. Not saying he'll do anything, I think he won't, but he can at least relax a bit and hear out offers.

LA will go deep and could repeat, especially with Kane now out of the picture in Chicago. They are certifiably hot, they have done this before, and they look poised to do it again.

IMO, of course.

Remember, in 2012 they lost only four games throughout the playoffs and won the Cup despite finishing 8th in their division and not having home ice in any series. They are a completely different team come playoff time.

Yeah, I like the Sekera deal.  Go Kings.

On Leafs retaining $650k of Winnik's salary: I read that it was necessary for the deal to happen because of the Pens lack of cap space, so I wouldn't use that as part of a comparison of the Tlusty deal.  I wonder if one of the 2 draft picks Toronto got (a 2nd and 4th) was a throw in for the $650k?

IBTD, they've had numerous offensive problems this season and I don't think that'll change come round one

Friendly wager? Kings in five. I don't care who they play.

That's about what I expected. As a comparison, Toronto got more for Winnik but they retained half of his salary.

For the record (well, it's already on record), Winnik is the free agent I was saying we should sign before the season began. He's had a good year playing on a bad Toronto team. His salary was only 1.3 million or something like that.

He has 25 points (one more than Skinner), and is +15. He's not used on the PP and doesn't see top six minutes either. He's a physical player also. Really wish we would have signed him.

Sadly, my "told you so" will get lost in all of today's activity. :)

Happy with the returns. In my opinion though, I'd rather keep McClement. I know they've talked about resigning him, and it never went anywhere. But he's a big reason, again IMO, why our PK is so good. I see him going for a mid round draft pick, and that's not exactly that much to us.

Agree, and BP sure likes that fourth line as it is, with good reason.

By the way, can we now say the sale is on?

I don't think so, yet. We all knew that Tlusty and Sekera were marked as moving due to UFA.

Now if someone else moves, then yes.

Now the 1st round pick from the Kings is conditional for the Kings making the playoffs if we get this year's 1st round. Otherwise, it's next year's.

McKeown is only 19 years old. It takes defensemen time to mature and develop. I think this was an awesome deal!

I was listening around 6:30 on the FAN 99.9. They were interviewing Cam Ward and Cam did not shy away from any questions they threw at him. The biggest change Cam mentioned, and we've noticed, is that he is playing the game like a kid. Just trying to enjoy it and not over-think things and let things bother him that he cannot control.

At first I was disappointed with the return on Tlusty, his only real "great" season was in the strike year, and that was when he scored a ton of goals feeding off two (potentially) great assist men. Well they were great that year. I'd be shocked if he re-signs with Winnipeg, so they are probably getting him for the remainder of the season plus the playoffs if Winnipeg holds on and qualifies. Maybe the sub-zero temps in Winnipeg will remind Jiri of what he liked (at least one thing) about playing in Carolina.

Only RF really knew what was on the table for Tlusty, and I guess this was the best he could get. Might open Jiri and his agent's eyes in the offseason about his $$ value as a UFA.

We're going to have 2 1st round picks in this years draft.  How awesome is that?!

Assuming LA doesn't fade, which is possible but seems pretty unlikely now.

I'm sure this was the best option out there, but I had hoped that we would get the pick of a bubble team that might then fall out of the playoffs, but LA protected themselves from that. Now for us to get a top half pick they'd have to fall out of the playoffs, twice, and even then it would be in 2016.

Still, it is looking like a first rounder in this year's draft.

Also, while LA is built for playoffs and has been an incredibly difficult out, all 3 of their Western Confernce series went to 7 games last year, and they'll probably be playing a top seed, so it is possible for them to exit early.
