2016 Off-Season Talk

Recommended Posts

The Black Hawks one that substitutes a showgirl feathered headdress for the Indian Chieftain one borders on the sacrilegious, but it's pretty funny.  Turning the Panther's logo into a Siegfried & Roy type cat jumping through a hoop was one of the more cleaver ones imo.

The most interesting thing to me is that ESPN will devote time and money to this, but precious little to ACTUAL NHL COVERAGE.

They have more online than on tv.  But doesn't tv coverage just follows overall national interest?  I mean, not even all of the Cup Final games were televised on network tv this year, which is kind of sad when you think about it.

I wonder if the NHL is even still considered by many as one of the 4 major US sports?  Seems like college football and basketball have passed it in popularity.

A name being rumored in trade talks that'd be much cheaper than Duchene, RNH and some of the others mentioned here is Marcus Johansson. He's averaged 45 points over the last 5 seasons and can play all three positions. Only 25 years old so he's just entering his prime years. Has the Swedish connection with Rask, Lindholm, Nordstrom.

Not as flashy as other names but would be a great addition and fits into the type of guys Francis has been adding. He is a RFA but shouldn't be hard to lockup.

ESPN did a logo makeover for every team if it relocated to Vegas.  Here's the Canes:

Among my favorites: they turned the Bruins logo into a poker chip.  And they turned the Devil's tail into one of those "Live Show" neon sign arrows you see at strip clubs, lol.

I like the Senators and Devils logo's

Salary cap $73 million for next season, up just slightly from $71.4 million.  Cap floor is $54 million, up from $52.8

Yeah the key as in previous years is what is PK willing to spend? What is his cap? I never heard of anything further on the law suit initiated by his sons.http://www.cbssports.com/nhl/news/hurricanes-owner-peter-karmanos-sued-by-his-three-sons-for-105-million/

Yeah, that's the primary key. But secondary is how crunched teams near the cap limit will be when it comes to managing their rosters. RF has proven very adept so far at taking advantage of cap limited teams (Chicago).  There was talk that the cap could go down, which might have opened up a few more opportunities.

Well, we know that he has to spend at least $54 million because that's the cap floor. Going 10% over that puts the value at $59.4 million, which the Hurricanes can do even with one more fairly-pricy ($5 million/year) free-agent contract. That would leave the team $13+ million below the cap.

The lawsuit, at the moment, is not even a factor, IMO. The way the legal system and the courts move, it probably won't be heard 'til 2018. I'm sure PK hires the best lawyers he can afford, and even the cheap lawyers know how to string out a case....

Yes, but even so, the cap only went up $1.6 million. Fine if your team has one player to sign to a new deal (and he's not so great), but not so much of an increase that teams up against the cap are going to let out a collective sigh of relief.

So Vegas is official even if Black Knights isn't.

Would be interesting to go see the Canes there one day (assuming the Canes are still around). Put a nice bet on the Canes at the casino, then go see the game.

I realize that people do this anyway, but I mean legally.

Their guy claimed they'll be 85% sold out with season tickets.

I recently moved to Vegas so I'm excited about a team coming here. The arena is gorgeous and it's right on the strip. It'll be a great game experience.

I've been looking into getting season tickets and several of the options are sold out. They say around 14k deposits have been made. Arena holds a little over 17k for hockey. I'm still debating putting down my deposit and I may have to soon based on how quickly seats are going.

Just got back from Vegas Faulker, how interesting for you. You're not a magician are you?

In your favor the main guy at the press conference admitted that a bunch of their pre sales will vanish, so there will probably still be seats, especially the first couple of years.

I'm not a magician but I went to a magic show last week and was convinced I could have my own show based on how bad the guy was.

But that's what I'm waiting on. Pre-sale tickets to vanish so I can swoop in on some of the cheaper options. I want to sit upper level shoot twice side. Currently none available from what I was told.

I've just found my second Western team to cheer for after Dallas...

Now I've got something else to go see in Vegas besides the Australian Bee Gees Show ;)

The ice conditions shouldn't be a problem unless they make the playoffs. Oct-April here isn't bad at all.

"Cool"  B)

And thanks, I obviously don't know the seasons out there.

Congrats to Vegas, can't wait to see the name and team colors and logo.

I guess this also means we are setup for more relocation BS speculation.

Stick with the plan GMRF.

With all the Finns we are signing we ought to start a rumor the Canes are relocating to Helsinki.  That might shut the Quebecers up for a little while.

Speaking of Finns - and OBXer is doing some Jedi mind trick here - I was just thinking about this in the last minute.

Finland is pumping out players.

Good to have Joni over there looking out for things.  My understanding is he had Aho on the radar last year.

I've seen reports of a couple teams in need of a top 4 LHD. Should we be throwing Hainsey out there to gauge his value?

Warming up the car right now for the long drive to Raleigh so i can dial the phone for RF...

I was in Toronto over the weekend - 3 pages of hockey in the sports section in June...anyway, read that Montreal is willing to listen to talk about PK Subban.  The guy signed an astronomical contract but man the Canes could use his swagger.  People rag on some of his decisions on ice but....the Canes need some swagger in the worst way instead of being the quiet dressing room of get-along-guys.

I think we can do without his kind of antics.  Just my personal opinion of course.

I love Subban. But that trade would be insanely expensive.

ditto this. Puts us right back in the box we just got out of.

We're D-veloping just fine. :)
