2016 DRAFT talk

Recommended Posts

To the speculation that Francis tried to move up, Canes Country had this:

According to general manager Ron Francis, though, the lack of movement wasn’t for lack of trying, and while it’s always easy for armchair GMs to criticize the lack of movement, sometimes the asking prices are so high that it becomes counterproductive

Sounds like he tried.

Thanks Hag. Those were some of the ones I was looking at earlier, but without the shootouts.

Gauthier has been compared to Rick Nash. Watching those highlights? Does not seem that far fetched. Heck, maybe he can play this year...

Gauthier will score a ton of goals just banging pucks in from the front of the net, but this guy can score all kinds of other ways. He is slick as heck with the puck (like Nash). He makes sweet little plays around the goal to fake the goalie out. He can shoot a lighting quick one timer, or dangle and snipe his spot, and has you mention he gets the puck up routinely, forehand and backhand.

But if anyone wants to see one play to just wow you. Check out Hag's highlights with the play that starts at 5:31. That is enough to draft him on alone. You have to watch it a couple of times to believe what you are seeing. He cuts across the ice, R wing to L wing, carrying the puck across his body while crossing legs over and gaining speed, comes over the blueline on the LW with good pace and the puck on his forehand and head up looking like he's going to pass it across ice, but in a slight of hand quick move, instead he flicks the puck backhand behind the back and directly onto his far skate blade for a nano second before it is kicked back to the back of his stick, now in front of him. He then gets low and angular and turns the corner around the dman, reaching far ahead with the puck still on the back of his stick, now just him and the goalie. Then quickly lifts the stick and pokes it forehand under the left pad for a goal.

That, was elite skill. We stole this guy.

There is another one where he makes a slick move near the net, the puck pops up about knee high, and he bats it in out of mid air.

This really looks like a guy who could push 40 goals at some point, and while he may not put up 60 assists, there are a couple of very nice primary assists on that reel alone.

More Gauthier highlights:

This one has some more slick moves and some nice hits (also some repeats).

But check out:

1:01: slick shootout move

4:30; nice partial break move

4:40 Another super skilled, where'd the puck go? baffle the defender (through his legs) and score.

Well, this just won't stand. :D  Equal airtime needs to go to #13 overall Jake Bean.  This kid has a dynamite and deceptively quick shot, and watch his feet.  This was a great pick by Tony MacDonald and his staff via GMRF.

What I like when watching these is his willingness to boldly go to an area on the ice that no Cane has gone before.

Exactly what I was thinking. Size may matter, lol.

He can lift it too, and an added bonus, he can pass!

Some of those short side roof shots he had almost no space to thread it in there, pretty sick twisted stuff there.

Nice walking the blueline action too.

Bean's pretty young, isn't he? Will he be going back to juniors next season, or heading to college?

Bean is a 2-3 year project based on his weight. He has a high IQ. Had he been closer 200 pounds he may have gone higher. He'll need 2-3 years to gain 25-30 pounds and get used to playing at that weight.

I remember when we drafted Pesce his weight was even more of a potential issue.  He was 6'3", 165lbs or thereabout.   That worked out pretty nicely. :D

Took him 3 years. I'd expect the same timeframe.

That works out perfect. In 2-3 years Hainsey, & wis are gone. Hanifin, Pesce, & Slavin all RFA needing new contracts, & we find out if any of the other prospect can make the jump to the NHL. Seems about right to me.
