PK lawsuit and Relocation rumors - what does it mean for the Hurricanes

Recommended Posts

This pretty much kills it I think.

Ding!!

dogbutler nailed it too: Haters are gonna hate, no matter what.

I'm sure the "rationale" behind Bleedin' Bill Watters' constant yammering about the Canes moving is the traditionalist view Realm spoke of. In my experience, the Canadians who so proudly refer to hockey as "our game" are the same ones bent on keeping it for themselves.

You get the same kind of moaning from the anti- expansion crowd.

That's great!  Is that a hag original or did you find it someplace else?

I wrote it, trying to capture the spirit and veracity of the Quebec City sportswriters. It is just as credible.

You did a great job. I wonder if The Onion takes submissions?  It's certainly of that quality.

hag65, that has got to be the funniest thing I've read in several days!  Thanks for the uptick in attitude.  I'm still bullish on the Canes and our two recent signings fuel the fire that was ignited by the team last season.  It's going to be an interesting next several weeks with the draft, free agency, salary cap effects, etc. transpire.  I have confidence that Ron is going to make the best moves he can to improve the team.  Thanks again for the laughs.

Thanks for the kind words.  A little levity during the long offseason goes a long way, at least for me.

I also agree with the positivity.  I see amazing things in our future.

seriously hag, your Quebec press clipping deserves to be seen by more than the limited members of this community.  Where else might you post it to get wider circulation?  I could see it picking up steam if it gets out there.

There is a Buisness of Hockey board on HFBoards that has had a raging relocation debate about the Canes to become the Nordiques. I'd love to post that there....peoples heads would explode in Canada.

Go for it.  I release all rights and trademarks to the material.  If I tried to post it with a single digit post count I would get the troll label.

I'd post it but I'm a single digit count as well.  How did you get it in the box like you had copied it from an actual source? That was a nice touch.

1) start by quoting any post

2) when the editor comes up, hit the icon in the upper left next to the eraser, which changes the editor to HTML mode.

3) manipulate the HTML how you want to, i.e. in this case I just removed all of the quote stuff that pointed to the original source, the date, etc.  What was left was an empty QUOTE block, then I pasted in my article. inside the quote block.

4) you can use the preview button to make sure it is right.

Basically surrounding any text with a beginning and ending QUOTE tag will work, if you know what that means, apologies if it is obvious.

Saw a quote somewhere (I think it was Facebook) that addressed the issue of attendance as a factor in relocation talk, so I decided to do a little research on a Saturday. I looked at the last ten years of NHL per-game home attendance team-by-team (got the data from ESPN's website - http://espn.go.com/nhl/attendance/_/year/2006), and here's what I found:

Hurricanes' rank and attendance in the past 10 seasons:

2015-16   #30   12,203

2014-15   #29   12,594

2013-14   #23   15,483

2012-13   #17   17,558 (short season - 24 home games)

2011-12   #22   16,042

2010-11   #20   16,415

2009-10   #23   15,416

2008-09   #20   16,572

2007-08   #20   16,633

2006-07   #15   17,386

2005-06   #21   15,596

Okay, so we know the Hurricanes were last in the league in attendance in 2015-16 and next-to-last in 2014-15. Which teams occupied the last two spots in each of the last ten years?

2015-16   #30 - Carolina    #29 - Arizona

2014-15   #30 - Florida      #29 - Carolina

2013-14   #30 - Arizona     #29 - Florida

2012-13   #30 - Islanders   #29 - Arizona

2011-12   #30 - Arizona     #29 - Islanders

2010-11   #30 - Islanders   #29 - Arizona

2009-10   #30 - Arizona     #29 - Islanders

2008-09   #30 - Islanders   #29 - Winnipeg

2007-08   #30 - Islanders   #29 - Arizona

2006-07   #30 - Blues        #29 - Chicago

2005-06   #30 - Islanders   #29 - Chicago

And the top five in attendance the last ten years?

2015-16 - Chicago, Montreal, Detroit, Minnesota, Philadelphia

2014-15 - Chicago, Montreal, Detroit, Philadelphia, Washington

2013-14 - Chicago, Detroit, Montreal, Philadeliphia, Vancouver

2012-13 - Chicago, Montreal, Detroit, Philadelphia, Toronto

2011-12 - Chicago, Montreal, Philadelphia, Detroit, Toronto

2010-11 - Chicago, Montreal, Philadelphia, Detroit, Toronto

2009-10 - Chicago, Montreal, Detroit, Philadelphia, Calgary

2008-09 - Chicago, Montreal, Detroit, Philadelphia, Toronto

2007-08 - Montreal, Buffalo, Ottawa, Philadelphia, Toronto

2006-07 - Montreal, Detroit, Tampa Bay, Toronto, Ottawa

2005-06 - Montreal, Tampa Bay, Detroit, Philadelphia, Ottawa

I know, TL;DR.

Summary - I think the NHL should relocate the Islanders to Quebec, since they've been last in the league in attendance in five of the last ten seasons and next-to-last in two others.

Better yet, let's move all the NHL teams to Montreal, since Montreal's been in the top three in the league in attendance for the past ten years!
