Ice Rinks Fight Energy Costs

Recommended Posts

Saw this topic today on the news feed from my ISP, decided to investigate further.

It's no surprise that energy costs are a big factor in the cost of doing business for ice rinks - for a lot of small rinks, energy cost makes up a third or more of their budget. This is an impediment for providing services, since it means the amount they have to charge increases the amount that parents have to pay for hockey, ice skating, etc.

Woodstock, Vermont is trying to do something about this. The local Union Arena board of directors has adopted a four-tier plan to get the rink to "net-zero" energy use. This will allow them to reduce the cost of ice time, which allows more kids to get involved in ice sports. Sounds like, if they're successful, it could be the beginning of a trend....
