Off-Season Talk 2017

TVR is a low risk, high reward. Cap hit $825k. Better than Murphy. An RFA next season.

Our blue line is under the age of 26.

I think the idea is also, Fleury or McKeown (or both) may still be NHL ready if not in October, at some point this coming season.

Will either of them be able to replace Faulk if he traded? Or how top 4 D would look like?

Without Faulk? I'd foresee:

Slavin - Pesce

Hanifin - TVR

Fleury - Dahlbeck/McKeown

This would probably net us +10 to +15 goals, assuming Duchene can pot around 30.

EDIT: And that would be assuming we didn't go after a vet for the bottom pairing. If we don't move Faulk, TVR would be where Dahlbeck/McKeown would be. If we did find a bottom pairing guy, Dahlbeck, McKeown, and Fluery would compete to complete that final pairing (in the scenario we do move Faulk and we do get another D afterwards).

I have to imagine we are in on: Galchenyuk, Duchene, Landsekog, and even MacKinnon. I'd imagine we'd have to include Hanifin in a MacKinnon deal.. and I'd do it.. :P

Rags supposedly offered Stepan, Kreider, and a 1st. Not really sure this one is legit though.

Also, if we don't make any moves today, supposedly tomorrow will be even more busy trade-wise.

Habs got Schmelko from LV for a 2019 5th rounder.  Well I may have to take back my excitement of TVR.  J/k.  Did GMGM hurt his D market slightly by taking so many?

Have to consider the deal we made with LV too. We probably gave them a 2nd (late 2nd at that) because they essentially got no one from us in the expansion draft. (sorry Brickley)

yeah this may have been part of the expansion draft considerations...so the full trade was:

CAR:

TVR & 2018 7th + LV lays off Stem & Nordy

LV:

2017 2nd & 5th..and their pick of AHLers.

No way they wanted anyone else not named Stem, or Nordy. :)

Vegas now has 13 picks this year and counting...6 in the first 2 rounds.

Which is amazing, we need to retain Stemper's goals, and sustain our success at PK (Nordstrom is a bit stealthy in how great he is at PK). And we got that bottom pairing dman with potential still to rise to a top-4 role.

Ugh, Islanders are close to another "big move". Probably Duchene or Galchenyuk.

Well if we take GMRF's word and believe he isn't trading a defender to get help.  I believe that eliminates Duchene, Galchenyuk, Mackinnon and Stephan from the viable options list.

options that may be available:

Stastny, STL- only scored 50 points once over the last 5 seasons and is overpaid at 7.5 million actual salary next season.  But could be a cheaper acquisition because of the performance and STL's need for some cap space.  The risk is low because he only has 1 year left.  Which may not be terrible since Aho supposedly will be center ready in a year.

Carter, LAK- older but still producing with over 60 PPS. Larger cap hit but only owed 3.5 million AAV over his next 5 seasons.  LAK wants cap space and what better way than with prospects.

Big Joe, UFA-  could sign him and cost us nothing

Schenn, PHI?  Does Philly need a roster spot for their 2nd overall pick?  Also only have 10 million in cap for their top pick, 2 RFAs, a starter goalie, and at least one other defender.  They will need more space than they have.  He has 3 years and a little over 5 million per left on his contract.

anyone else have any suggestions?  Most other teams arent looking for prospects because they have a good farm, need to add salary themselves, and/or are looking to compete now.

If Francis manages to use this expansion stuff to keep Stempniak and firm up our bottom pair defense and still manages to get that forward wow. One obvious way to do it would be to sign TJ Oshie but of course nobody thinks were in that ballpark. But what if we were?  Think of how good would be.

Anyways I hope Francis is able to package up a bunch of prospects and pics and get that guy to keep everything he's created to this point.

Go after Oshie after July 1st?

I'd give our first right now for a week to lock in Oshie before FA.

Not really a suggestion or do I advocate it but I read about 2 weeks ago a rumor, suggestion, best guess from some pundit a trade centering around  Galchenyuk  for Lindholm. I didn't pay it much mind then and still don't but I suppose it would be an option.

With Francis indicating he wants deals centered around picks and prospects I think that big jaw dropping type trade is not the direction we are going in

Which is why Faulk might be the odd man out. He is going to demand more than we're probably willing to pay him, if in fact we keep TVR, Pesce, Slavin, and Hanifin.

With Faulk being under contract for two more years, I see keeping him this year and letting Fleury and McKeown get another year in the AHL. Even better, send Murphy down and let one of them come up. Either way, this would solidify our 7 d-men.

I think RF is happy with his defense by adding TVR to the ranks. Now, I might be missing something, and if so, please point it out.

Knowing what we know at this point in time I think your assessment is spot on.  I think there is a good chance Fluery jumps in but I wouldn't be surprised to see one of Fluery, Mckeown or Carrick (if we re-sign him) as part of a trade. They are all prospects and the log jam is at D

No way I'd give a 1st unless it was a sign & trade deal. Remember Washington has no 1st, but I can't see them trading him in the division.

but a 3rd to get exclusive rights for extra week might be doable...not sure if it is even worth it at this point can't you start talking to FA early next week???

UFA can meet with new teams the day after the draft is over.

addition:

not supposed to negotiate contracts during the time.  Can discuss length of deal you would consider offering/ accepting, the team, facilities, plan, etc. basically each side can say their initial terms but it isn't supposed to past that for contracts.
