The Ax Fell at ESPN

We thought the ESPN coverage of the NHL was bad. I can't wait to see what they do now. I expect the ice they will cover will be in short glasses at a sports bar.

Not even sure i realized they still covered hockey at all, to be honest.  Haven't watched that network in years.  Hopefully all 3 of them will find employers who give a crap about what they write about.

ESPN has been hemorrhaging programming for a while and losing viewers as well as long time commentators.

People just don't watch them that much anymore. And some of their new programming is moving towards more social/entertainment topics.

Well, when your network now wants to push social and political agendas instead of covering sports like they should, this was bound to happen.  Besides, ESPN did themselves in a decade ago when they ceased showing NHL games.  I just hope Melrose tells them to eff themselves and walks out the door as well.

+1.  I have no idea who sent the memo to sports people (all over) to push politics.  I reconnected with sports in 2001 specifically to get away from the world.

How quickly social media reports everything has really replaced the need for ESPN. Join the groups or follow the tweets of things that interest you and don't sit through 30 minutes where 20-25 minutes is sports you don't care about?

If their was anything interesting last night, it's on my Facebook wall typically within an hour.

Also why I gave up my THN subscription, everything I was reading was week old news.

The days of ESPN as predominately sports news are mostly over. It's all opinion and analysis all the time on multiple stations. Heck they have had about 50 mock NFL drafts, and 5000 analysts covering that for weeks now.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy some sports analysis, but given the number of shows doing that, there seems to be no end of an audience for it.

Unless, of course it's hockey talk. Where's the NHL mock draft? Ha!

I can't remember the last time I actually tuned into ESPN.  What service do they provide you can't get quicker?

Instant irritation.  But the web can still probably do that quicker.

It's quite amazing to me that papers still exist. I have no idea how their making money unless it's a front for drugs now.

The only time i ever see a newspaper now is when the Charlotte Observer throws their little low-protein high-carb 'extra' in our driveway every week that i have to pick up and carry to the recycle bin.
