Hurricanes need a Rival for next season !

Recommended Posts

back in the early 2000's  the canes had a rival with the devils  because of the playoffs ,  then  id say late in the 2000's  it looked as if the thrashers were going to be that team the canes could have a rivalry with but was quickly  escorted away from the south up to canada  and over time that died down .   since then  the canes have zero rivals  that get under the skin of the team   like pens have with the caps , or  wings vs the leafs ,  or rangers vs the islanders , or kings  and ducks and sharks have with each other .    im thinking if the canes  had a rival  it could help get more fans to go to the games  cause it would be something people would want to watch .  that love hate  relationship  that help  build and mold a franchise .   for example in the acc , duke , nc state and unc  pretty much hate each other   and  ticket sells go really fast for those games  .   im thinking the canes need to make the caps their number 1 rival  for next year .  i  understand  that you want the team to play 100 %  hard for every game and im not saying we dont change that .  all im suggesting  is  the team plays a little dirty  against the caps  to help build and grow that rivalry that the canes so desperately need .  and since their team is close driving distance  reasonably   it's not to bad for our club  either .    the canes need this to help  grow more interest in hockey .  what do you guys say ?

With the addition of Seattle, we'll get our old buddies from Florida as well as Nashville in the new realignment. We should have no trouble rekindling old feelings with the Panthers and Lightning, and Nashville offers us another regional team to clash with regularly as well.

sorry to burst your bubble  but with seattle  coming into the league  in 2020 they get put in the  pacific  div .   arizona is most likely moving to the central , and then all the divisions will have an equal number of teams ,  that is if  they dont expand the league to 34 or 36 teams .

In a topic regarding rivalries, you're telling me that the NHL wont rectify the horrid decision to pull DET from their rivals in CHI and COL?

If I remember correctly Detroit had lobbied for years to be put back in the east.

it makes sense for them to be in the atlantic  since they are so close to everything in that division .

I think the reasoning was the time zone factor. Detroit said it was not fair for their fans to be force to watch the majority of away games two time zones and three time zones away. I can understand after forcing myself to watch some of our west coast swings only to suffer the next day. We only have to play those west coast teams once.

We have never had a true rival. Buffalo for awhile because of the 06 encounter, Washington a little, Rangers, Flyers Pens I suppose on our part but not on their part. Maybe Boston from the Whaler hang over days but not really. TB and Florida have each other as rivals. Atlanta was more like playing your cousin.

Nashville would be a natural for us but they are in another conference and a time zone away.

You also need to be relevant to develop  rivalry. We haven't been relevant in awhile.

They won't have a rival until they make the playoffs consistently.  This team is out of the spot light and will remain so until they have a successful season.  Devil fans never once considered the Canes a rival by the way.

NC State's rival is Carolina.

Carolina says NC State isn't their rival it is Duke.  This is to get under the skin of State fans, and is also somewhat true from Carolina's perspective as Duke is a real threat and State not so much.

Its a fun thing to say someone isn't your rival just to **** them off.  The older franchises will never admit we are their rivals even if we are, just for that reason.

ECU wants to be everyone in the triangle's rival but can't be because of opportunity and respect.

Who cares?   Rivals emerge and then disappear.  The nearest team is 5 hrs away by car.  Like it or not, we are the only game in town.

The next rival will be the team who we whup in the playoffs or get whupped by.  We don't have rivals because no one considers us a threat, and we don't make the playoffs and lay a whuppin on anyone.

You got the cart before the horse.  First you become hard to play.  Then you become a thorn in someone's side.  Then you have a rival.  Whether they admit it or not.

they did  when we were in the playoffs ,  they beat us once  and then we came back and played them  3 different times  and beat them all three times .  they hated the canes , so did marty  , it's unfortunate because the canes have been away for so long from the playoffs 9 years that both teams  have changed so much since those times  .   i figured  since the realignment that might of re-kindled things  again but  nope .  it  pretty much was to late  for anything to remain  hostile .     thats why im saying the canes should really target the caps next season  .  they have brooks orpik  ,  " he hurt cole  , booooo  "   lol    im looking for something the canes could have before it's too late for this franchise .  you guys might not hear about it as much as i do but i constantly  hear  about from other people about the team relocating up north  and i want to prevent that from ever being something said about my canes .

The Canes don't have a rivalry because they aren't relevant at this time.  Not sure why that is so hard for you to grasp.  Hopefully, we get better and one will develop, as it's always fun to attend those types of games.

I think you're wrong.  The Canes have never had a rival.  NJ fans never considered us a rival due to only meeting us 4 times in the playoffs.  Pretty obsolete tbh.

Seriously-  Our fricken rival should be whatever team is in our barn on a given night and shutting up opposing fans watching their team.

There is a pecking list . IMO- Philly,Rangers,Caps,.....

Rivalries are a by-product of success. If you want more interest in hockey and give fans and players something to be proud about, and develop more press coverage, build a team that will win more games and stays in the top 8 spots in the conference on a consistent basis.

This.  Start diving deep into the playoffs every year and teams and their fans will take notice and put the Canes on their radar, and rivalries may blossom.  There simply aren't any teams geographically situated for any other kind of rivalry, no matter how hard any of us may want them.  Again, it takes two to tango, and nothing short of Canes playoff success or the NHL putting a team in Greensboro (not gonna happen) will create a dance partner.

Canes fans considered the Devils a rival.  The Devils did not consider than Canes to be a rival in any shape or form.  Reason I know this is because I asked several of them including friends.

Problem with the Devils (or any northeast team) is that we'd be at best 6th-7th on their list at all times even if we met them every year in the playoffs. The metro rivalries stay hot because their fans are so close to each other to keep talking crap even when their team sucks (Isles) theres no big group of Canes fans within 8 hours to stoke the coals to keep it going or even get it going.

Can somebody name all the current "hot" NHL rivalries for me now?  I guess the Habs and Leafs will always be relevant.  Caps and Pens because of Crosby/Ovechkin.  Some inter-city/state rivalries like NYR and NYI.  Some of the California teams.   Face it, most teams don't have real rivals in the traditional sense, and that's true in most pro sports now.  Free agency has done away with a lot of that.  Most identify more with players than teams.

You can't judge the hockey world by the few obsessed nut jobs that waste time in June posting on the internet that follow a losing franchise.  We aren't normal.

Imo, it's more, as somebody above said, as playing a cousin.

Habs and Bruins was hot, but not lately
