Trade: W Nino Niederreiter for C Victor Rask (no joke)

Could it be a first leg of a 3 team deal? Taking Rask saves Min 1.25 mil in cap space but that's about it

It saves them 1.25 per year

edit* messed up how many years Rask has left.

Well that replaces one of our highly touted " 5th overall" picks.

I can't believe we only gave them Rask. Wow.

When my phone dinged and I announced this trade to Mrs. wxray, she literally got up and did a small dance of delight.  She doesn't typically dance.

This was awesome.  :ohyeah:

I'm not going to surf Minnesota's message boards, but I'll bet there is a lot of head-scratching right now in the Twin Cities.

My AF buddies who are Wild fans are “irate” over this trade

Nino was a much bigger force in the physical game earlier on. Is it a change in the scoring person giving credit of hits, an injury, or a style change request from coaching staff?

He was getting credit for 120+ hits for his first 5 seasons; 129, 175, 155, 129, and 120. Yet last season it was 58 hits and 46 so far this season. He only played 63 games last season.  So maybe it is a shoulder injury issue.

His shooting % is 11%.

Look at who’s been behind the bench the past two seasons vs prior...he isn’t a physical coach

I peeked at one MN board and there is no consensus there either.  Most agree it appears to be a change of scenery trade.  Lots of confusion.  Someone asked, "Does he skate fast?" and a Canes fan jumped on and said, "No!"  Someone else said, "Maybe we'll get the 'Carolina Effect' out of him."

I presume they are referring to reinvigoration of E. Staal and Skinner and are hoping and projecting it on Rask.  Well, if that happens, good for Victor.  But it just wasn't happening here anymore.

Comments about Nino were mostly about his lack of anything good or bad this year, just he is.

To all MN lurkers:

There is consensus here...Rask was pretty much worthless to us the past season and a half...and we think we got the better end of the deal.

I would say it is a bit on the negative side for Minn if you look at their boards.

Also, I asked a Boston guy I know who is very hockey knowledgeable and he said:

We played them last week and he was a factor. Not afraid to get his nose dirty - especially for a piece of Swisschard
I'd take him over Rask all day  4:12:04 PM
Makes me wonder why the Wild would do it  4:12:16 PM

Well let’s hope it works out. But give TD one for not cheaping out. I did read his last 20 goal season was 2015-6. Minnesota must think he is past his peak. But Rask only had one good year.

Nino is on his 2nd of 5 years of 5.25 million cap hit.

The salary of each year: 4.6, 6.075, 5.85, 4.25, 5.475. We owe him 18.247 million over the remaining of this season and the additional three years.

I mispoke earlier.  Rask is actually in his 3rd (whoops) of 6 years.  So he is owed 13.756 million over the life of his deal.  So we do pay about 4.5 million more.

Sad that Nino just became the Canes highest paid forward...Well at least until the next trade🤞, or AHO extension is announced.

I always liked NN...really like this trade for the Canes!

Staal is paid 6mil per year, though.

Don't forget Staal.  Capfriendly buries him in temporary IR box.  He's at $6M per through '23.

So where does Nino slot in

Ferland-Aho-Teravainen
McGinn-Wallmark-Martinook
Svechnikov-McKegg-Williams
Foegele-Rask-Maenalanen

Whoa, and here I was just thinking what are we gonna do at C when Staal gets back. McKegg has certainly proven he deserves to stay up, as well as Wallmark, so that would leave Rask as the odd man out down the middle. I was wondering how they'd handle this, but I was not expecting a trade. It seems to be a pretty sweet deal for us, too.

Im hoping for:

FAT

Nino-Wallmark-Svech

McGinn-Martinook-Williams

Foegele-McKegg/Bishop-Maenalanen

That is two top lines that are hard to take the puck from and can hit when needed.  If Svech and Nino could be a scoring center, watch out.
