Digital tickets only this year (for STMs)

Recommended Posts

What do you all feel about the fact that tickets this year for STMs are digital only?  In other words, need to show a smartphone in order to have a barcode to scan.  I liked having the tickets loaded on the STM card (plastic card) and I feel that should be continued.  Call me a fuddy duddy, but not having any option other than the electronic barcode, on my own phone, seems discourteous.

We already discussed it and were called fuddy duddies by the wise people of this community.  Welcome to the FD club!

I'm with you, but for the other side, I'll repost coastal_caniac's response to our fuddy-duddiness below.

Quote

Jesus, so much beeching about a simple thing like e-tickets.  Do you self-proclaimed old people not fly?  The world also exists with Android phones, imagine that, choices.  I feel sorry for your oldness because it's self-inflicted.

I'm sure you will get in the game, though, so that's good.

My issue is I have my Dad buy 10 pairs of tickets from my STH load and he is over 80yrs old.  He does OK with a lot of tech but will not like having to deal with electronics to get into the game.  I'll be heading to the box office and forcing them to print the pairs that are for him.  They have printed me pairs before for these situations.   I don't see it as possible they will not help you out if you go ask, not everyone has a smart phone.  I will say I did not go do it yet for this season however.

Actually wxray, I referred to you as an old person, which was your description of yourself, not mine.  But, if you prefer fuddy-duddy that's your call as well. ;)

That being said, the fuddy-duddies should be happier because the new technology that is being employed doesn't use barcode scans anymore.  It also doesn't require being connected to a Wi-fi network, both of which caused delays at the gate because there are going to be people who can't figure out how to pull up their tickets at the gate for barcode scanning.

For the record, I prefer paper tickets, but have no problem with the newer technology which is now pretty much standard across all pro leagues.

Hopefully, this change at least will make it easier for the tech challenged - of all ages.

I like it.  Name change now properly applied.  :)

I can live with this.  There are some games I can't attend and Mrs. FuddyDuddy goes with one of her OldMaids.  I have to give her a learnin' on how to pull up tix in those cases.  It was easier for her to just grab the card.

What is the the technology they are using then?  The guidance I got from my rep was that a user would need to log into his hurricanes.com accountmanager, navigate to the game in question, then choose "view barcode." That to me means a barcode scan.  And all of this is still going to need some sort of network connection, so it seems it could still be slowed down by people in one way or another.

I'm not even saying I need paper tickets, though I did like that from a souvenir perspective.  Everyone today is all about the 1s and 0s.  Am I'm not even that old.  Again though, I just liked that the STM card could be used to "hold" the tickets.  That wouldn't have been a big concession.  But I appreciate the discussion, and sorry for resurrecting an old topic, especially in a new thread.

Now get off my lawn!

You'll fit right in here!  Stay for a while and contribute.  Seriously.  Welcome to our little section of the internet.

I'm also not sure about what coastal is saying about no barcode.  I hope he can clarify.  I know they want us to "load tix" onto the phone somehow.  I haven't done that yet because it was unclear to me what to do.

BTW, if it means using NFC technology, not all phones have that yet.

wxray1:  Thanks for the warm welcome and the invitation to stay a while.  I will plan to, best I can....

I'm not new to the 'Canes, or even to the web boards, but it's been quite a while (years).  I was a regular reader and occasional poster on some of the old web boards like scoreboards, insiders, and one way back that I think was called Penalty Box and was hosted by a superfan of the day.

I've been a plan holder in one form or another since the 'Canes have been in Raleigh.  Just things like job and family and other concerns have worked to grab some of the time that I used to devote to the 'Canes.  🙂  And now Father Time has apparently turned me into that older guy that complains about ticketing technology.

Thanks again.  And now on to other topics like actual hockey (which I look forward to watching if they can somehow scan my ticket from my pager or my jitterbug flip-phone).  (kidding)

You can do screenshots of barcodes and those screenshots will be stored on your phone like any other photos if you do not want to install additional app just for managing tickets. Also all tix bought via Ticketmaster/StubHub are electronic by default and obtaining paper tix will cost you more due to delivery.

If I read my email about the tickets correctly:

-you can call your rep and get paper tickets, and

- there is something different about the technology this year and screen shots will not work.

As for this being what is used across all professional leagues, I read in the paper the Panthers went to this technology, and the first pre-season game began with the majority of the crowd outside the stadium. Even for those of us that are technically challenged, surely it will get easier after a game or two. Or maybe I should call my ticket rep. They are always great and willing to help. Paper tickets might be the way to go for me!

They sent an email giving some instructions.  Need the app.  As mentioned in the other thread, it is all about the app, which ... well, nevermind...

Here's the instruction email:

WXRay, you old FuddyDuddy,

In preparation for the first Hurricanes game of the 2019-20 Season at PNC Arena, we wanted to send you some helpful information on Mobile Entry. If you have never used it before, rest assured, mobile entry is easy!

As a Hurricanes Season Ticket Member, the tickets within your plan have already automatically been loaded into your online "Caniac Account Manager." Your account manager can always be accessed in two different ways:
  • Visiting Hurricanes.com/AccountManager  in your phone’s web browser.
OR
  •  Clicking "Manage My Tickets" within the NHL App (after selecting the Hurricanes as your favorite team)
Once you have successfully logged in, you should see your game tickets and parking passes (if applicable) within your account. Simply click View Barcode and you will be ready to enter the doors!

Helpful Tips
  • STM Discount Cards –Your ID Card and STM Badge will not scan for entry, so be sure to utilize your mobile device.
  • Save To Passbook – We highly recommend you save your tickets to your Passbook. This will expedite entry to future games and make your tickets more easily accessible.
  • Forwarding to Friends – If you plan to enter separately, or plan on separating from others in your group for the game, we recommend simply forwarding them their individual ticket(s) so they can always access their tickets for the game. This is a simple 2 step process within your Account Manager, under “Forward Tickets”

My mom who is a STH doesn’t own a smartphone, so she is livid about the new ticket policy. I know last year it seemed as if someone ahead of us always had trouble getting their phone to scan

My question, which the club has been nonresponsive about is, how do parking attendants know you have premier parking as you enter the lot? Without a paper pass, you have nothing to wave at them as you drive in to be sent to the lot you paid for.

Between this and the new clear bag policy it’s going to be more difficult and take longer to just get into the game.

My mom went to the arena today and tried to get paper Tix. They told her nope, electronic only.

Good luck with forcing them. My mom went to the arena today to try and get the, printed because she lives in olden times and owns a flip phone. They wouldn’t give her hard copies.

So what did they say?  You are required to own a smart phone to attend Canes games?

Also, what do you get at the box office, do they print them for walk-ups (purchase at the gate and enter)?

If you buy at box office they print you paper tickets (at least last season).

I asked this morning how they will manage sifting everyone into their appropriate parking lot and was told that we’ll have to vigorously wave our smartphone with our parking pass at the attendant from our window as we drive by. They acknowledge that the *learning curve* for the attendants to direct people with this new system may lead to delays this season, so best be leaving for the game now, to ensure you make it to the game by the second intermission. 😂

It would seem pretty easy to print a couple of season long Premium or whatever parking pass you have for the window just to get waived in. Eventually the actual game pass has to be scanned by the last guy anyways. I guess they want out of the printing business.

Yes, get a smartphone was the answer they gave her. TBH it’s an argument I’ve had with my mom for years, so it is ALMOST worth it if this forces her to get one. Still I wouldn’t lay bets in her caving.

Ahhhhh, and what would you expect, now that they have that STM money in the bag?  Thanks for being an STM, now, what have you done for us lately?  Signed, the Canes organization.

Just so people know, we just entered the arena on our eTicket only tix. They are not handing you the little print ticket on scan in the way they did last year with eTix, so if you are with multiple people and do not all have smartphones, you won’t be able to seapate

to go out for food, restroom, etc. the person with the phone who has the Tix will need to escort you in/out of your section or you won’t get back inside.

Also, best to carry a large power brick so phone doesn’t die during the game I guess..

Obviously, their thought process is "if you can't afford a smartphone, you can't afford season tickets...."

Or maybe it's "Hey, you could afford season tickets. Surely you can afford a smartphone!"

Ah, that explains why our GrandFuddyDuddy friends are so peeved.  They have fancier tickets and are not happy with this.  We sit in the cheap seats where the ushers don't care.

Our GrandFuddyDuddies are always moving in and out of their seats separately (200 level?) and kind of became unhinged over this new policy when we discussed it the other day.  I didn't understand why they were babbling about loading on two phones, etc.  I think I get it now.
