Headline just popped up on my phone, Slavin replaces Dougie. It's great and sucks all at the same time. A worthy replacement is all I can say.

Doesn't surprise me at all.  Our representative was a defenseman, so they weren't going to take a forward.  He doesn't fit the 'all offense' mold of All-Star games, but i for one might actually enjoy someone out there trying to defend a little bit.

Slavin can skate and handle the puck.  I think he'll actually blend in quite well out there.

From the "Stats that don't matter but DO" department.....November 21st. The last time this season we lost only 1 game in a row in regulation. That loss to Philly and the 3-2 loss to CBJ on Oct 12th are the only two times all season we've been able to limit the glaring downturns of 2, 3 and 4 game slides. IDK what that says is going on, but whatever it says, it says it real loud.

Hi fellow Caniacs!   Long time reader, first time poster.  Been to 11 home games this season in section 117 row A so have had a great look at our team.

The great thing about our team is that we have the ability to beat any team any night.  We definitely have had nights with zero puck luck and inconsistencies but we are typically the controlling team but I have one huge issue...Jake G is very weak.  Stats aside, he just doesn’t look like he has any confidence in his game.  Watching him first hand closely and you can see the indecision and these hesitations are really killing us.

Even with the loss of Dougie, I think the team would be much better off holding Jake as the healthy scratch and let Hayden & TVR man the third line...no defenseman is perfect but every game he makes a play that seems to kill us...am I the only fan who his play drives crazy?  Seems like a great guy but man, does anyone think Bean would be -20 ?   Could we really do worse?

I think everyone knew what the Canes were getting when they signed Gardiner.  He's a power play specialist, essentially, and you put up with his defensive warts.

The ability to beat any team has kind of eluded the guys in the last couple of games.  It's probably just the packed schedule prior to the all-star break but the fact that Anaheim thoroughly outplayed the Canes in the 2nd, 3rd, and overtime periods was somewhat surprising.  And Columbus did the same.  We'll see after the break how things play out.  As long as it doesn't become a trend, everything should be OK.  By he way, I also am a longtime reader and first-time poster.

Welcome, in the Columbus game, we dominated.

The bad news. Our home stand is closing down and we've fallen back. We've lost Dougie. We play in the East and the Metro. The good news is that we can get back to our team game and when we do, the schedule doesn't seem to matter that much.

We have 4 more home games, 2 in front and 2 behind the All Star break. We are going to need to win most of these because after that we have road games in St Louis, Arizona, Vegas, and Dallas, all in a row.

This is a dangerous bit of track we're on, and a bad place to have a losing streak. PULL UP. PULL UP!

Been away for a while, but got home in time to see yesterday's game.  Nice to see a good game with a win.

A few things on my mind.

What happened to the Cane's scoring?  I have to admit the JW signing was good.  But I'm not sure it is good enough.  Our forwards need to find their game.

I think both Martinook and Haula are feeling the lingering effects of their injuries.

Finally, Reimer needs to stop with the aggressive passing.  Please.

For whatever reason, Haula and Dzingel just don't seem that effective lately. Not pinning the offensive woes on them at all, but I'd bump Williams onto that line. For the most part in my amateur judgement our offense comes from an extra dose of aggressiveness and confidence. If we pull back on the forecheck and the offensive push even a little, our offense dries up. In that case only the most skilled, dynamic guys can still make plays fairly consistently. Aho, TT, to a lesser extent due to youth, Svech and Necas. But one guy who can still do it is Williams. He is just so slick and clever and has so many years of knowing how to play. So bumping him up to get some other guys going could help.

We have tightned our D up, and that had to happen. I do wonder if we have lost a touch of offensive pressure in that though. We need to get back to that suffocating forecheck, disruptive game that creates a lot of our offense.

Just checked and the stats bear it out too.

Dzingel 1 point zero goals in 8 games

Haula 2 points 0 goals in 9 games

Both guys were doing much better before that. Yes the whole team has dried up. Necas has 3 points 2G/1A in 8 games.

You had it spot on when you said "the whole team has dried up."  Haula and Necas make a good LH center/RH RW combo, but they need a good forechecker/hitter on the left side to help control the puck.  JW does not really fit on that line, as putting the only 2 RH shooting forwards on the team on the same line makes no sense.  Maybe moving Dzingel off and replaced by either Svech or Foegele works best.

Staal's nice hit was the only reason the puck came into play for that first goal.  He deserved a tertiary assist for sure.

And then after that?  The forecheck seemed to go away again.

I'm thinking about injecting a different offensive skill set. The RH/LH thing is a issue I guess, but most wingers can play both wings, and until this last game we didn't have JW around at all. There may be a better way to juggle that line that had been working. I thought Brind'Amour had juggled it a little for a game or two, but went back to it last game. They didn't seem to generate much. But they're not alone.

This may be dumb, but is it possible or do you think Staal should go to RB and offer the "C" to Williams for the rest of the season. Seems like the time to do something like this would be after the Winnipeg game coming back after the All Star break sort of starting fresh. Feels like that would be a real captain's move by Staal.

I disagree with this completely. We took the C away from Rod mid season and everyone knows how that worked out. Williams can offer plenty of leadership without a letter on his sweater. And JW darned sure isn’t coming back next season. How awkward would it be next year? What message have we sent to the team members next year about leadership potential on our team if we give the C to a guy who walked away from the team for 48 games this season. Willy surely doesn’t expect or need the C to help lead this team the rest of this year, and I believe he has to much respect for Staal to take the C from him if offered. I don’t think Staal is so insecure that he will not recognize what Willy can offer in supporting our captains whether he has a letter or not.

But the guys need to find their mojo from someone or somewhere. We have 33 games left and in the Eastern Conference, especially the Metro, we figure to need 40 points to get into the playoffs.

Well guys and girl.  I don't know of a more heroic way William's could have returned aside from what I saw last night.  That was some hockey gods *edit* right there.
