Release the (Seattle) Kraken!

Recommended Posts

Great hype video on the link, actually gave me goosebumps.  Slick logo too.  Good luck to Ronny Franchise.  Hopefully we see a Canes vs. Kracken SCF in the near future.

Seattle is beautiful. May be a great move for John Forslund as an announcer.

That would be the only local job I see him taking for two reasons. 1 how well he knows Ron 2. The owner will pony up way more money then any other to help build a fan base.

Other then that John goes national only

Agree, though would add Boston as his other non national gig option if it were open.

And the owner probably would pay him to not work to have him on retainer since it's chump change for a hockey team budget.

You know damn well that's not how business works. The owner would not commit to pay a salary for not working no owner and no successful business would. It's just crazy how much Tom Dundon gets grief around here for being a smart businessman.

Entertainment is a different business though. And this is sports and entertainment intertwined even more since Forslund is entertainment "talent". If you have the best around and it's a fraction of your budget, it makes good business sense, IMO to lock that down. Again, it's not like Forslund went in demanding a raise, etc.

Another way to look at it is that the NHL is the best, biggest, richest hockey league in the world. John has been voted the best play by play man in local markets which includes everyone but Doc Emrick. Thus, if we assume Doc is the #1 guy, then John Forslund is the second best hockey broadcaster in the world.  It is not necessarily bad business to pay that guy, even if you have a temporary setback in cashflow, especially if your business is well capitalized, and the franchise value very likely to leap so much in one year that you could pay 1000's of Forslund's just with that.

If Forslund was so-so, or worse, then by all means, let him walk. Also, I guess if you as the owner pretty much had him penned in with no options, might not be nice, but still play hardball. But Forslund has options IMO precisely because someone else will see the value. Seeing that value is the other half of good business, not just pinching pennies.
