Movies in 2008

Yeah, as much as I love Bond, The Dark Knight will be the film of the year. The Dark Knight was just an absolute masterpiece of a film. I think the hype helped it as well. One thing I wish the Bond producers would do is advertise as much as the Batman producers did, but I think they probably know people will go see Bond with, or without all the press.

From what I've seen from Quantum of Solace it looks to be great as well, probably on the level of CR, maybe even a little better. Also Quantum seems to have a really good game being released along side it as well. We just haven't seen all that much footage from QoS yet, so I'm trying to keep my excitement in check until October. ;)

I've heard Hellboy 2 is supposed to be really good, but it was a real boneheaded move to release it just a week before TDK. They had to have known that TDK would run Hellboy out of the Box Office.

Hellboy wont touch TDK for alot of reasons to add to yours, people who loved Hellboy's comic hate the movies with a passion saying it doesn't follow them at all. Meanwhile the movie lovers and comic lovers of batman love this Nolan series because it's following the comics.

So Hellboy spliting its audience from it's real fans and then releasing at a stupid time, not smart.

Went to see Step Brothers on Saturday, and I liked it. Typical Will Ferrell movie, lots of swearing and odd jokes. The only thing I don't get about him is why bother making R rated movies if you know that your target audience is mostly guys too young to see R movies without their parents. To prove my point the theater was really pretty empty on Saturday at 7:30, the day after its release and a great time for a movie. If he would just take out most of the bad words/ innapropriate scenes then he would make a lot more money... Plus you could always add them back in and choose to have your DVD be "Unrated".

I saw Step Brothers today and while it had its moments it still wasn't all that good in my opinion. Anchorman was outstanding, Talledega was good, Blades was okay, Semi-Pro was okay, and Step Brothers was again...okay. I think that John C Riley is just too much of a similar comedic actor to Ferrell for any movie they're in together to be very good. That was why I think Anchorman was so good, the guys who were in it had different comedic styles and the humor was a little more original than the same kind of stuff we've seen from Talledega-Step Brothers.

Get Smart was absolutely hilarious though. I don't think I've seen a funnier movie in a long time. Steve Carrell was outstanding.

I really liked Hellboy and Hellboy 2, it is just that I don't see why in the hell you'd release it when it would be in competition to TDK. I mean Iron Man grossed a hell of a lot of money, but it would've made nothing if you had only released it a week before TDK.

The trailer for the Bond film does look pretty awesome.

We went to go see Wanted a couple weeks ago and though it was pretty cool. The action was awesome, the stretches (bending bullets, shooting from miles away through multiple windows etc) were only stretched a little bit.. some of it could be slightly believeable. Obviously the physics for this stuff is pretty cut and dry, but it wasnt TOTALLY out on a limb...as the mythbusters would say "plausable". Acting of course was great from Jolie and Morgan Freeman. Both me and my fiances jaw dropped when Freeman said "Somebody shoot this m********ker"... totally out of character for him. But thats what made it cool.. to see him do something different.

I remember playing the Classic game Max Payne..

The story was horrifying, and really good.. brings back memories..

I saw it for the first time last night (trailer) and it looked pretty good. Mark Walhberg has done some really great work lately (discounting "The Happening"), but I'm always a little sketchy about the video game to movie transition.. some can be great (ala, Lara Croft) and some can be terrible (ala Doom)... Hitman looked good but I havent seen it yet. I think Max Payne will be pretty good.

Quarantine was one of the scariest movies I've seen in a long while. It's a film that uses the shaky camera and the suspense to scare the beejebus out of you. Seriously, you know it's coming. You know something's going to jump out to the side and attack whoever's on camera at the moment. It doesn't help.

About midway through though, you're yelling at the screen, because the characters in the film are acting like they've never seen a horror movie in their life. If weird stuff is going down, don't split up. If someone's exhibiting zombie-like symptoms, don't try and reason with them, and CERTAINLY don't try and reach out for them.

You know, that advice could be used for the Canes too.

I'm going to see QUANTUM OF SOLACE tomorrow night/Friday morning at 12:00. I'm so pumped for this. The reviews so far have been pretty positive, just not as great as CASINO ROYALE. Those who go to see the film though, watch CASINO ROYALE first. It is the first direct sequel in Bond history and because of what happens to Bond emotionally in CASINO ROYALE this is Bond in an emotional state we've never seen him in before. It closes out the Vesper story arc which began in CASINO ROYALE and begins Bond's fight against a new crime organization which will be there for the next few films. QoS is a very different film than any other Bond film up to this point. It is a serious film, with much of the quips gone (good thing in my opinion) and more witty, situational humor in its place. Bond 23 should be more of a traditional Bond movie, but QoS is different. Don't go in expecting Goldeneye or Goldfinger or anything like that.

Only complaints I've seen so far is that there may be a bit too much action when compared to the character development scenes, but that is done to mirror Bond's personality as a driven man focused on bringing down those who tormented Vesper in CASINO ROYALE.

This is the first time in nearly 20 years that we've had 2 great Bond films on the heels of one another. BOND IS BACK!!

I saw it last night at 12.00 and am going again tonight. I really liked it. Not as much as Casino Royale, which happens to be my favorite Bond film, but it is just outside my top 5 Bond movies.

It has gotten some negative reviews because the film is really not comparable to any Bond film you've seen before. The plot is hard to follow and I think it will become clear to most naysayers no later than the second viewing. Even though the plot can be a little hard to follow though I do think that it is appropriate the main focus was showcasing Bond's quest for vengeance and revenge over the death of Vesper Lynd. It sets up the next few films very well (which have been confirmed as being more traditional Bond movies, but still with Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace's realistic tone) as they have made sure that the organization in the film, QUANTUM, is going to be one which will be fighting with Bond for a long time. One complaint I've heard is that they didn't give as much away about QUANTUM as they should have. This is why I feel some will gain new appreciation for Quantum of Solace after the next film is released. I like the way they still made QUANTUM the mysterious organization because I think they missed an opprotunity back in the 60s with SPECTRE in the Connery/Lazenby films because we knew the organizations motives, leaders, etc. right when they were introduced.

Some reviewers expected a normal type of Bond film, but we've never seen Bond in an emotional state like this so it makes sense we've never seen a Bond film like this before. It was made fast and furious to mirror Bond's own goal and mission in the film, to get his revenge and to make sure that Vesper is avenged. The ending of the film signifies that Bond's and Vesper's story from Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace is officially complete and he has now evolved into the Bond we all know and love from the first 20 films.

My main complaints with this film is that I would've tacked on about another 10 - 20 minutes of character development and plot exposition and taken out the plane sequence altogether. It wasn't really needed. The emotional scenes and dialog scenes that were in it though kicked *edit*. The scenes with Mathis and Bond were easily the movie's best. Their final scene in the movie was one of the most emotional scenes in any Bond movie I've ever seen.

Also they need to get Daniel Kleinman back for the main titles sequence, the one in Quantum of Solace wasn't bad, it was just kind of average. And they need to bring someone good back for the title song, White and Keys threw together some *edit* for Another Way to Die. The music itself isn't bad, but the singing is atrocious.

Worth seing it again?

Yes. Go see it again.

I just saw it a second time and loved every second of it. Still not as good as CR, but a great film and a great Bond film. I think the plane sequence still could have and should have been omitted, but every thing else was great. Maybe improve the boat chase and lengthen the opera and car chase to go along with some more dialog and character development and most of its flaws would be corrected.

Craig deserved more dialog, but he nailed every single scene he got to show more than his physical attributes. I understood the plot completely this time. It still isn't that great of a plot, but I was able to really enjoy the movie and not wonder what was going in some parts. I don't get why some people, namely all the critics, slag the film for not having enough Bond elements or not having enough humor. Sure Bond didn't have sex multiple times, quip jokes every 20 seconds, drive the DB5 or talk to Q and Moneypenny, but there were so many other of the traditional Bond elements in there that you don't notice that the others aren't there. Even though the film didn't have quite the level of witty humor of CR, it was still there in spades. It doesn't have to be a ridiculous sexual innuendo to be funny people.

I still think the absolute best thing about this film is that everything is now tied up. We've finally gotten to see Bond at his career's beginning and now, starting with Bond 23, we will get to see Craig take on a more realistic, traditional Bond more in Dalton's vein as he tries to take down the organization.

I believe that the best way to describe this movie is that it perfectly rounds Bond's character into the form that we knew from the first 40 years of the franchise. He's a womanizing, loner agent because he doesn't want to get emotionally involved with others and if he happens to then he does not want to put them in any danger. QoS's main purpose is that it is a vehicle to get Bond out of the early stage of his career and get him into the more traditional Bond movies of Bond 23 and beyond, and I'll be damned if I didn't have a great experience while watching it. The plot takes a backseat to making sure that Bond becomes the man that he had been from Doctor No through Die Another Day and I'm perfectly fine with that as long as Bond 23 is more in the style of Casino Royale.

I'll go ahead and revive this.

I'm getting excited for Watchmen. I'm about half way through the graphic novel now, and its got some real potential to be an awesome movie......of course they could screw it up, but I think it'll be great.

I don't know much about Watchmen, but I'm interested because it is supposed to have a huge following and the legal battle over the rights to the movie has been nothing short of epic over the last few months.

Last two movies I've seen were Valkyrie and Gran Torino. Valkyrie was good, not spectacular even though with its subject matter it easily could've been amazing.

Gran Torino was great though, highly recommended, classic Eastwood.
