Seeing all these signings really makes you think. Guys like Cole, Brind'Amour, Walker, and Whitney all had opportunities to test free agency this season and last. But they decided not to and opted to stay with the Canes. Despite all the signings now of players changing teams, loyalty is not dead. As long as players are dealt with fairly and have a desire to return to the city, loyalty still occurs. Look at Brind'Amour. He could easily fetch Ryan Smyth-like money on the open market, but instead opted to stay in Carolina long term for a reasonable (though probably below market value) price. The same goes for Walker, Whitney, and Cole. Seeing teams like Buffalo lose Drury and Briere really makes you appreciate the commitment our guys made.

Yes, we lost Aaron Ward and Cullen to free agency last offseason, but we've definitely had more players stick with us than not.

We've gotta be making some sort of D-Man arrangement. Swap D or something. JR knows that this was an area that needed work. He picked up Hamilton who's good on the PP, but I don't think he can trust Kaberle completely. He's gotta pick up the 1/2 D somehow. Might take a while, possibly a few months, but I know he can pull that rabbit out of his hat.

I hope the Sabres loose Briere or Drury. Then lets see what else they got.

It's a bit scary for all of us in smaller markets to watch the dismantling of the Sabres. I'm no Sabre fan, but we could easily be in the same spot as them or worse, as the Preds. I'm just happy to see our core group staying together. Hamilton seems like a smart, money-conscious move. Even if we don't sign a big name, let's not forget that we have a good team. After that mediocre season they produced last year, the Canes are going to be hungry again. If we could just add some pop on defense, we'll be dangerous again.

Well when the cap is getting so high the Rangers can afford both Drury and Gomez on top of thier current team its a concern.

It's a concern, but unless the cap continues to go up year after year the Rangers and Flyers will be in a huge mess say two years down the road.

The cap is a concern. Weren't the soaring salaries the reason we lost an entire season in '04-'05? Without a huge television contract, the NHL seems to be heading down the same dangerous path it fought to avoid during the lockout.

Beg to differ: no team with Drury and Gomez can be a complete mess. NYR and Philly really won out yesterday and kicked everybody's butt. Next season they will both be beastly.

And, way to go Edmonton: trade Lupul and Smith basically for Pitkanen?? Dumb.

True dat...true dat...I saw this on the Sabres page yesterday when I went there to see what their fans were saying about the loss of their best two playes....Makes me feel good that our players want to stay here because they like the area.

It's not so much next season the Rangers and Flyers will need to worry about, it's the ones after that. If the cap stays put or lowers then the both will struggle to sign players. This cap is closer to the NFL's then the NBA's. It will take some time to get used to how things work, but I say right now, both teams are in trouble for 09 and maybe even 08.

Posted a list of available free agents for next season, along with RFA's as well. Some of the of the players might make some big money after this free agency. Where's a list of how much players make now and when their contracts up?

For those that want an upgrade in Defense, you just might get your wish. JR says he's not done.

The signing leaves the Hurricanes with about $1.5 million to potentially spend before reaching the team's $44 million budget, and Rutherford indicated the Hurricanes were not done dealing.

A couple of late night signings. Sydor 2 yrs. $5 million. Petr Sykora 2 yrs., both to the Penguins.

IF JR wants a 1/2 D-Man, then who do you think would be dealt for a 1/2 D? With only 1.5 mil (and that's assuming he doesn't go a little over budget either), if he signed a D-Man out of free agency, that wouldn't get a great defencemen with the way the markets going today. And then we'd still have a surplus of D.

You got to remember, the cap is based on REVENUE. If the money ain't there then the cap won't rise, if the cap rises without the revenue to support it then the players all have to cough up money at the end of the season.

if we buyout Hedican then that number can go up to $3.5mil!! JR has said all along that if the "right" opportunity came along then they would consider going over the self impossed cap.

But can you see that happening? JR has pulled some surprises before, but that one doesn't seem very likely.

It is still early, a full two months left before training camp opens.
