When Does The Frenzy Start

Recommended Posts

Kevin Weekes has supposedly signed with NJ. Eklund is reporting it as done, have yet to see other confirmation.

But if its true I guess he's looking forward to semi-retirement and playing 10 games backing up Broduer.

it is official, it is on sportsnet.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (CP) - The New Jersey Devils signed goaltender Kevin Weekes to a US$1.375-million, two-year contract Thursday to back up superstar starter Martin Brodeur.

Weekes, 32, was 4-6-2 with a 3.39 goals-against average in 14 games for the New York Rangers last season.

He's likely to see even less action in 2007-08, as Brodeur appeared in 78 contests last season, going 48-23-7 with a 2.18 GAA.

``Kevin Weekes has played more than 300 career NHL games and will bring added experience as a backup goaltender to Martin Brodeur,'' said Devils GM Lou Lamoriello.

Weekes has appeared in 323 regular-season games over eight full NHL seasons with Florida, Vancouver, the New York Islanders, Tampa Bay, Carolina, and the Rangers. The Toronto native recorded a career-high 23 victories and six shutouts with Carolina in 2003-04.

Supposedly, the Sabres might be on the verge of losing another one of their key players

The Flyers are reportedly set to make an offer for Buffalo's Vanek... if true, the Sabres have the opportunity to match, or they can opt to take the compensatory draft pick for him...

The Flyers have very little cap space at all now and Buffalo isn't going to let Vanek go, especially after getting blasted for letting both Drury and Briere walk.

Well thats the thing... if they can clear up some Cap space, expect them to make an offer to Vanek. They'd probably end up letting a prospect like Umberger or Gauthier go (either player would actually be nice to have here in Raleigh, IMHO).

Apparently, Briere has been trying to knock down Holmgren's door since he got there to try and sign his friend and former winger to the team... Now wouldn't that be somethin, Biron talks Briere into going, then Briere talks Vanek into going... yikes!

But that's hardly "on the verge" of a losing a player with everything that would have to happen. Plus the combined salaries of Umberger and Gauthier won't land Vanek. Buffalo would match that before the ink dried on the offer sheet.

According to an Australian interview earlier today, Vanek hasn't even been approached by the Sabres with any type of contract talk yet, so don't be so sure of that...

Remember teams have until the last day of training camp to get under the cap, that being said their is nothing to stop Philly from going above it now. they just can't start the season that way.

I think LA is the other rumored team that's thinking of offering Vanek an offer sheet. LA is also hoping Emery goes to arbitration and Ottawa can't afford his salary.

True, but only by 10%. If Philly tried to sign Vanek now they would exceed that in all probability. Buffalo will be seriously motivated to match any offer and Philly would get only 1 shot at it so they would have to make a crazy offer. They still don't even have a full roster yet and if Rathje's injury status changes, they are screwed.

I've been hearing that Derek Roy's also considered going to arbitration. Man, if Regeir and the Sabres lose both Vanek and Roy on top of Drury, Briere, and Zubrus, I can't see Quinn and Regeir around much longer.

Roy is set to go to arbitration as well. Don't forget that an offer sheet has no bearing unless the player himself signs it as well. If Vanek and Roy want to stay in Buffalo they will.

The Oilers move also enraged Buffalo, with Sabres managing partner Larry Quinn warning his team will consider making offers to Edmonton players in the future.

"I'm happy we have Thomas for seven years. I think that's really important to state here," Quinn said. "But it's not doing the Edmonton Oilers any good what they did today."

Nothing personal, Oilers GM Kevin Lowe said.

"I think it's rather juvenile on their part," Lowe said. "Fellas, it's a business. Take the personal out of it. It was right for the Oilers and obviously, it appears, it's right for the Sabres."

Yet another reason I hate the Sabres, they are such whiney little Bit@hes. Vanek is worth a lot of dough, Kevin Lowe says lets try and see if he'll take this, and of course the kindergartners who run the Sabres get all pissy

All I have to say to Buffalo is Wah Wah Waaaaaaah

This is a bush league move on Lowe's part. He knew the Sabres would match any offer put on the table for Vanek. What this does is maybe set the rate for a few othe RFA who are headed to arbitration. IF a team won't pay then maybe he can have a shot at them. To be fair the Slugs brass was telling Lowe they would match no matter the offer.

Why would you do that? They're lucky Lowe didn't offer the league maximum for 15 years.

Hasn't it been well established over the last week or so that the Buffalo management doesn't look 2 minutes into the future?
