Shootouts '07-'08

Recommended Posts

What we saw last night better not occur during the regular season or, to put it simply, we're screwed. Our 3 shootout "specialists" were all stopped by a mediocre goalie and our talented forwards such as Staal and Williams couldn't beat him either. It's not every night Ward will be able to stop 9 shooters, and let's face it they weren't all that good. Had Rick Nash been in that game it could have ended well before nine rounds. We got lucky last night and Ladd and Cam saved us. Hope to never see something like this again from us, though.

If Ward does what he did last night (which was simply perfect positional play) we have no worries... as for Leclaire being a mediocre goalie, well... he was on a hot streak last night, and apparently Columbus's management doesn't see him as mediocre since he's ging to be their #1 from what I can tell

It's not realistic to expect that from Cam all the time. It's just not possible. I expect him to have a great year but he won't be able to stop 9 shooters every night, no goalie can. As for Columbus' management not seeing Leclaire as a mediocre goalie...well, has their management really proven they know what they're doing? Still the only nhl team to have never made the playoffs and I don't see it happening this year, either.

As far as Ward goes...seeing him last night, we are good on the goalie part. As far as making a shot in a SO, we are probably just as screwed as last season if we keep using the same guys ...Staal, Williams, Brind'Amour... The other teams know too much about their style of play. These are the guys they study. But if we mix it up a little this season...we may actually kick some major butt in SO's. Like last night..Ladd! Now throw some LaRose in there, some players that you don't see often in SO's, we may actually get somewhere!

Last season we were totally screwed. This season..I think we're gonna kick some! Especially with a brand new Ward in the net!

Fredrik Norrena is their #1 goaltender.

While it would be nice to see Cam Ward play like he did last night on every night, that just won't happen. We need our offense to step it up. When you look at the difference in talent between the two teams last night, that game shouldn't have even been in overtime. We should have blown Columbus off of the ice. Michael Peca didn't play, Columbus' three leading scorers from last season (David Vyborny, Rick Nash and Fredrik Modin) didn't play, and their #1 goaltender didn't play. We had what will amount to our regular season lineup, without Frantisek Kaberle, and THAT is the best we can do? Nine rounds in a shootout? I don't like it.

I don't think Cam is being overrated, I really, truly think he is gonna rock! Yes, of course he's gonna have bad nights like everyone else, but not as many as last season.

I'm not saying he's being overrated. What I'm saying is no goalie can routinely do what he did last night, that was a truly amazing game. You can't expect him to blank that many shooters every time we go to the shootout. Most of those guys weren't even that good. I'm not saying I'm worried about Cam, I'm not, but he will get beat this year in shootouts, it can't be avoided.

Leclaire is a good goalie, and was a top prospect for a long time for Columbus, he's just always injured. Columbus isn't a terrible shootout team themselves either.

Under no circumstance would I rate Eric Staal as one of our top 6 shootout specialist. While he is a great developing player, he is a junk goal scorer (nothing wrong with that) not a sniper.

And for mixing things up, I agree with the other poster. Those of us that have seen Chad LaRose in practice or Scott Walker know those guys have some good moves as well.

Anything we do this year will be better.

1 made goal in what... 15-17 attempts?

I never said Staal is a shootout specialist. Our specialists are Whitney, Cullen and Hamilton. I simply am saying that talented goal scorers like Williams and Staal also couldn't score.

I'm surprise columbus didn't win a shootout, they have vyborny, zherdev, and nash who own mano a mano. Leclaire is a future star.

The fact some didnt play made scoring on the shootout very difficult. I'll wager Nash did get to watch it on TV however.
