I was wrong about this team and I apologize

Recommended Posts

won't even justify this entirely stupid thread with a response - all anyone has to do is see who was associated with the team when they won the cup and who wasn't, who is now and who isn't and fix it....

again, it's like you expect every year and game to be like it was like in 05-06. it just isnt going to happen like that. get over it already.
I agree. For every "fan" that worships at the alter of "why can't we play like 05-06", I wish they had a tape of Game 6 from those Stanley Cup Finals. There was a game that meant everything and that "great" "consistent" "whatever it takes" team SUCKED! The performance last night by the Cane's was like "miracle on ice" compared to that egg laid in Edmonton.

While the team clearly does have issues that need addressing, try and keep some perspective.

My .02 cents worth on this team.

First, what is the status of Commodore? Anyone?

OK, my summation of the team:

Staal- I have said this before, but there are times this season he looks very dis-interested in playing, even though he is second in goals on the team. It's almost like he's looking for those spectacular goals. IF he doesn't wanna play here, trade him. (Don't read too much into that last comment) GRADE C-

Stillman- Those he's been in a slump of late, has to be the best player on the ice. GRADE B+

Cole- Been playing better over the last couple games (4pts; 3g, 1a in two games). GRADE C+

Brind'Amour- I really haven't been impressed with his game of late. Doesn't looks like the same player on the ice we've come to expect. I have voiced this before, but it seems he's playing hurt. There was a game back in the early part of November that makes me think this. He isn't winning face-offs. GRADE B-

Williams- Hasn't really been following up last two season's scoring. As Brind'Amour goes, so does Williams. GRADE B-

Whitney- Consistent player. Good match with Cullen on the 3rd line. GRADE B

LaRose- Though he is a spark plug for this team, has really not been a good match on the top lines. He's a grinding, opportunistic scorer. GRADE C

Adams- Been pretty non-existent this season. GRADE D+

Walker- Been hurt, only played 15 games. Plays aggressively. GRADE C

Letowski- Seen Adams. GRADE D+

Hamilton- Started out pretty good, but has fallen off dramatically. No longer the PP specialist he was brought in to be. GRADE D+

Cullen- Has played well with Whitney. A good match. GRADE C+

Defense, has not been able to move th puck up to our offensive players very well.

Not physical along the boards. Seidenberg and Gleason have shown flashes, but not consistent. Commodore's presence right now is missed. At least he wasn't afraid to hit someone. Tanabe has been, well Tanabe. Wesley and Hedican have been decent, but again, no physical play along the boards. Wallin isn't throwing his body around like in the past, even when this team wasn't playing well, you could almost expect the physicality from Wallin. Not so much now. Kaberle I believe is still recovering from his surgeries. He doesn't look

comfortable skating out there. GRADE D-

Ward- Has shown flashes that he can be a top tier netminder. A lot of nights have been hung out to dry by this defense. GRADE B-

Grahame- Hasn't shown me anything so far this season. GRADE F

Unfortunately, team confidence plays a HUG part in this fuke the team's been in. If you do not have confidence in the guy next to you or in yourself, you're gonna do things uncharacteristic of the

way you play. This team has been hit in the mouth a few times and have not found a way to respond consistently. I think team chemistry is part of it. Maybe too many voices in the locker-room is affecting this. If this is the case, then the veteran leaders of this team, Brind'Amour, Wesley, and Stillman need to put an end to it. A trade will not help this team right now. They have to work it out in their collective heads and bring it every night like they did in October. Maybe a coaching change....... We all remember what JR use to do to Maurice every Dec.

KATHUMP!!

Sounds like some room was made on the bandwagon to me!

Y'all need to remember it a LOOOONG season and any team at any time can get hot or cold.

Look at my Sabres, my wifes Pens, and even the Ottowa Sens teams. 1 Month ago the season was just a formality for the Sens and the rings were made and the cup ready to be presented. Then they lose 6 or 7 in a row and what do you know they are mortal. Buffalo goes out and beats the 'Canes 8-1, loses 8-1, rebounds and wins 7-1

Still alot of hockey left people anything can and will happen!

I AM NOT GIVING UP ON THEM!!! Goodness, every team is going to go through tough times, weather it be a long streak or not, whatever. I am a fan and I'm standing behind them. They'll get through it.

Juct my 2c!

BUT HEY what do I know I am from BUFFALO! ;)

I really think they will turn it around, I don't think anyone on the team likes losing. If my guess is right and if Rod is any type of CAPTAIN they WILL be a different team come Friday!

Well, I can tell you that I am not a Bandwagoneer. I am not jumping ship either.

the work ethic of late has not been there.

Buffalo started out slow, but have been able to turn it around, as I think the Canes will.

Model,,,once again you hit the nail right on the head,,,i couldn't agree with you more, this is not a good team and they haven't been since game 7 of the Cup year. I don't think anyone on the team should feel safe right now, from the waterboy to the head coach. The team is not in a slump when you play like crap for well over a year now. I am getting so tired of spending my hard earned money to go to a game and have them play the way they did again last nite. Its getting to be a total rip-off.If any of you remember last year i started a (sarcastic)thread about "not having to pay full price for tickets if the team isn't going to give 100% effort for every game",,,, well i am starting to feel the same way this year. Something has got to be done,,trades, someone fired or something,,cuz this just isn't working. So people i would suggest toughening up your skin because,, it will probably get worse before its gets better.. The frustration levels are beginning to rise and its totally warrented!!!

Have been reading this board for years and never felt the desire to post until very recently. I can almost hear the hands wringing! It sounds like Steinbrenner with his newest manager in here right now. All these calls for trades is almost humorous (sounds like petulant children, reference Steinbrenner).

The answer is still within on this team. They have the depth, they have the talent. The team leaders need to figure out a way to tap the potential every game and get a good 60 minutes from EVERYONE. Whatever they brought in Montreal and MSG on the last road trip is what they need to build from. They are FAR from out of this, it's only mid December. A good close to the month and the breath holding and foot stomping will cease...for now... I hope.

Do I need to break this out already?? WOW!

Anti-MeltdownSquad.jpg

Oh yea, sure... go ahead and break that out... go for it

and while you're sitting around sipping the Kool-Aid thinking everything is going to be OK in the end with this team, they'll continue to play like this and end up missing the playoffs once again because they just aren't as good of a team as many on here think they are. They have the talent to play well, but they have absolutely no chemistry and together, they are playing like absolute dogcrap... And yes, comparing them to dogcrap is an insult to dogs everywhere.

I was going to break into defensive mode as you are but the above picture someone came up with last year makes the point well enough I think. The problem is the loss of chemistry on the ice. That's it imho.

You guys are becoming Canadian hockey fans. Next you'll be booing the team at games. (shakes head)

I like kool-aid. Were you trying to imply something else like spiked kool-aid?

By the way, comparing your attitude to dogcrap leepfrogs the Canes and makes you the insult. ;)

Want some of my kool-aid?

Before people start calling each other out as "bandwagon fans" everyone needs to take an honest look at this team.

Okay, so we started off really well, going 9-3-3 in the first 15 games. Hey! We are turning things around, this team is really looking like the team that won the cup, this is gonna be good. We were scoring goals, the defense was good, and even though we had lost all 3 games that had gone past regulation, the goaltending was solid.

Then, the dreaded 16th game of the season! The Lightningn handed us a pretty solid 5-1 loss, we thought, darn, thats not good, but its only one game. Since the 'Canes amazing start, the 'Canes have gone 7-10-0 in the last 17. Hey thats not too bad right, they started the season off well enough that they can have some slip-ups and still be leading the division, and almost .500, they are at least competing every night.

BUT!!!! during that 17 game stretch of going 7-10-0, the 'Canes have had some hearty beatings.

The Thrashers shut us out 3-0...come on 'Canes, the Thrashers?!?!?

The Lightning destroyed us yet again, 6-1, and almost did it again, but we had a miraculous third period comeback, which many of us thought could mean that the old 'Canes were back.

The Flyers beat us twice on home ice, and Daniel Briere netted a hat trick, all in the third period ("but our goaltending is fine" everyone said)

The Sabres game. 8-1 is about all that needs to be said.

The Redwings beat us 5-2 just two nights before that game, and we didn't even look like we could compete with them in the third period of that game.

The Sens just crushed us 6-0 on our home ice, in a game that looked like we had accidentally sent our AHL team out.

And here we are now, I am a HUGE Hurricanes fan, and I am not going to rag on anyone for calling the team bad, when they clearly are. We can't sit here and say the team is slumping, for over half of the season so far they have been "slumping". Some nights the 'Canes come out strong and look like they are competing, but then fall apart, and lose. Other nights the 'Canes don't even come out and lose. This team is on a steep slope right now, and the Coach needs to do something to get these players to realize where they are headed. The team is bad.

Chad Larose is over skating every puck and trying to do everything himself, its like, now that he is actually playing, he can't pass at all, and he isn't THAT good.

Cam Ward is turning into a horribly inconsistent goalie, after watching last night's game, I'm starting to think we got rid of the wrong guy after we won the cup.

Rod Brind'Amour needs to give the guys some kind of talk in the locker room, he didn't perform last night, and the team was showing it.

Eric Staal has really been using his big body more along the boards and in front of the net, but isn't seeming to get pucks in the net, which is what he needs to do. If anyone is slumping its Eric Staal, his points will come.

Ray Whitney along with Matt Cullen those two seemed to be the only ones upset by the game, I'm not sure why they weren't getting more time on the ice, but hey, I'm not the coach.

Justin Williams can't seem to score unless Brind'Amour's game is on, which it hasn't been lately.

We really need Mike Commodore back. Thats all I can say about him.

Glen Wesley best player by far this season, keep up the good work Wes!

Erik Cole and Cory Stillman where were they last night? Both guys have played well lately, but were nonexistent last night, come on guys, keep it up.

So, there you have it folks, the status of most of our team. The guys I didn't mention have played so poorly that I'm sure you have all noticed it. This team is falling fast, and someone needs to step up and do something, or we'll end up just like last year.

AF, you here at SJ too? Glad to see someone else who sees the humor in some of these posts.

Yeah i'm here at shady-j.

Sometimes people just get so fired up they think excessive over-analyzing and negative remarks about the team will do something to help them win. You know what I am gonna do as a fan? I am going to go watch practice today. It also solves nothing, however it's more like what a fan would do rather than what a drug-addict fan does. I call them drug-addict fans because when they don't get their high(wins) they go through withdrawals similar to someone on drugs.

great post and you were spot on in most assessments

The only thing that I think could change is the play of Ward. I know he can do better

and with Commodore back at some point it will get better.

Also I would make a trade for another defenseman.

This team has enough NHL scoring depth that they should somehow

explore to get a solid NHL defenseman. I do not know who

but someone like Aaron Ward was for us in 05-06. That is clearly missing

from this group IMO

Fans just want to see a quality product for their money. We're not seeing a quality product, quite often now. All of the games still only cost us 2 points, but when we lose this year we lose royally, and that seems harder to take than the close games. When's the last time we were in a one goal game late?

So with the product for the money take, I'm going to break one of my own rules and call out one guy. I've had it with Staal. He's the big money guy, but he just doesn't have it. You know he has slipped a long way when my (huge Staal fan) 10 year old son has gotten mad enough at him to start asking me, "Dad, what's wrong with him, why doesn't he try?". The infuriating thing is, watch how he plays whenever we play Pittsburgh or the Rangers. All of a sudden, he has a fire in his belly, that being, he wants to make sure he is the best Staal on the ice. So after seeing that, you just *know* he can bring more, but he just isn't doing it. I think that is the one thing that *KILLS* the fans about him.

Then, picture the vision of the last Washington game, and see Ovechkin scoring the goal, and acting like he just won game 7 of the Stanley Cup finals. A lot of people called him out for doing that, and honestly, I thought it was over the top as well, but deep inside you know in reality he probably wasn't trying to show up the Canes, he was just caught up with the emotion of what he had just done, and how it made him feel inside. Watch him play, and see if you ever think that he isn't playing every minute of every game with an intensity that can only come from an absolute love for the game and a desire to win that must be in his very soul.

We expect that fire from our guy too, and we know he can do it, but where is he all those other nights? I just have the impression (and Jordan's performance is starting to bear this out as well) that the Staal family used to just play out there on the backyard pond for "fun", but that true competitive fire was never lit under them. Maybe it just isn't in their personality.

I don't know if any coach can bring that out in a player or create it either. I just get the feeling we are going to have to get used to the idea that he'll be one of the better players in this league, but the second coming of Ronnie Franchise just may have been a little much to saddle this kid with.

There's nothing wrong with that, but with the big bucks comes the big expectations...

 We did not play well last night, nuff said there. However, Ottawa is a very good team and deserved to win. They played outstanding... there was no way we could've stopped them. Eric Staal is a valuable member of the team, and trading him WILL NOT HELP. Neither would trading Kabs. If you want to do something with Kabs, send him down to the Little Boys league (minor league) for a while. He would experience more (like Irbe) and come back better. We should blame the whole team, but last night's loss was a loss that was not stoppable.

Model, venting is fine... but blaming the whole team for a loss that could not have been prevented... that's just nonsense. :P:P

My recommendation for the team: Take more shots. My basketball coach says "You can't score if you don't shoot".

When's the last time we were in a one goal game late?

Have you forgotten the Red Wiings game already?? It was within one goal right until the last couple of minutes. (Reminder, they played the best team in the NHL only 19 hours after they left the ice in Montreal.)

I know this team is not playing to their potential right now, but I look at it as like an eight cylinder engine that is misfiring - once you get the timing right, ain't nothing else like it.

I am starting to think that some of the people posting here are plants, trying to get a movement going to trade some of our players (let's trade everybody, bring up the River Rats, and win the CUP), secretly hoping that we will trade the player you mention (Staal, Cam, Cole, etc...) to your team to help them get better. (Maybe that is how Atlanta got Recchi from the Penguins :P . )

Seriously, I don't think there is anybody here that thinks everything is okay here in Hurricanes country right now, but if all you can bring to the conversation is "This team sucks" maybe you should go watch some basketball or something.

Remember, WE do not know what is happening in the locker room. From where our PK was a couple of weeks ago, to how they are performing now is a huge difference. Maybe that has been the focus so much, that other aspects have suffered.

This team, OUR team, is trying to find the answers. I hope we find them soon.
