Your official stop for the playoff picture...

O.K.,so what do we need to do??

We win the division if we beat Washington. It really is that simple. That would put us 4 points up and 3 wins up. Even if we drop the next two and they win the next two, We have one more win than them.

If we win the game in OT or shootout, we can clinch with :

1. Earning any type of point in the final 2 games

2. Washington losing a game in regulation or in OT in their final 2

The only way to lose the division with an OT win is to go 0-2 AND Washington would still have to go 2-0.

If we lose the game against Washington in OT, we can clinch with :

1. Wins against Tampa and Florida

2. Washington earns 0 or 1 points in their final 2

3. 3 points against Tampa and Florida

4. A win against Tampa or Florida with Washington going 1-0-1

5. Two OT loses for us and 3 points or less for Washington

6. 0-1-1 against Tampa and Florida with Washington going 1-1.

If we lose to Washington, we clinch the division if :

1. We beat Tampa AND Florida

2. Washington losses their final 2 games

3. We match their record for the record for the final 2 games

4. Washington goes 1-1 and we go 0-0-2.

There are so many options and we control our own destiny. Washington has to win and hope we lose.

Hope this helps. Keep your chins up Canes fans. We are in MUCH MUCH better shape than them.

On a side note, the only way for both Caps and Canes to make it is for the Canes to lose tomorrow but win the other 2. Caps need to win out. Caps at 8 spot, Canes at 3 spot.

Bruins play Devils and Senators on the road, Sabres at home. Bruins will get 2 pts. 93 pts total

Flyers play Penguins on the road, Devils and Penguis at home. Flyers will get at least 2 pts. 93 pts total

Rangers play Islanders on the road, Islanders at home and Devils at the road. Rangers will get 4 pts. 95 pts total. Assumming they lose tonight.

My prediction for Eastern Conference Final Standings:

Pens - 103 pts

Habs - 102 pts

Canes - 94 pts

Devils - 97 pts

Sens - 95 pts

Rangers - 95 pts

Flyers - 93 pts

Bruins - 93 pts

- - - - - - - - - - -

Caps - 92 pts

The Rangers just beat the Pens in OT and moved up to 5th place, pushing Ottawa back to 6th. Both teams have 3 games left. If we win tomorrow, looks like we will be playing Ottawa in my opinion. Anything can happen in those last three games but here's hoping we play Ottawa first round and not the Rangers.

I think the Rangers have a very good chance of passing the Devils.

My prediction for the Eastern Conference:

#1 Pittsburgh (104pts) Beat Philadelphia twice (TAKE TIE BREAKER WITH MONTREAL, MORE WINS)

#2 Montreal (104pts) Beat Ottawa, Buffalo, Toronto

#3 Carolina (94pts) Beat Washington, Lose to Tampa, Beat Florida

#4 New York (99pts) Beat Islanders twice, Devils

#5 Ottawa (96pts) Lose to Montreal, Beat Toronto, Boston

#6 New Jersey (95pts) beat Islanders, Lose to Boston, Philadelphia, Rangers (TAKE TIE BREAK WITH BOSTON, MORE WINS)

#7 Boston (95pts) Beat New Jersey, Lose to Ottawa, Beat Buffalo

#8 Philadelphia (93pts) Lose to Pittsburgh twice, Beat New Jersey

This seemed to be helpful to a lot of people last season, so I decided to bring it back for this season. Every night, I'll update it when the final game involving an Eastern Conference team has concluded. On Friday and Saturday nights, since I don't have school the next day and can stay up later, I'll update it after the conclusion of the final game of the night. Once we get into the final few days of the regular season, I'll try to update it after every game, if I'm here. I'm just glad that for this season's playoff picture, we're actually in good shape, unlike last season, in which we were below the line most of the time. Anyway, hope you guys find this useful. :)

NOTE TO MODS: Can I get a pin for this? This is going to be a very important thing to look at in the coming weeks.

When do the playoffs start?

Up to Date Standing for the Eastern conference:

#1. Pittsburgh - Play the Flyers tonight. Tied with Montreal with 100pts.

#2. Montreal - Beat the free-falling Senators last night. 100pts.

#3. Carolina - Loss a pivotable game, now tied with Washington with 90pts for the SouthEast. Tough game against Tampa tonight.

#4. New Jersey - Beat the Islanders to secure a playoff spot. Probably secured 4th. Plays Boston tonight. 95pts.

#5. New York - Rangers have three games left, 2 vs. Islanders and finale against the Devils. Only 2pts behind the Devils for 4th. 93pts.

#6. Ottawa - Got blanked by the Canadiens last night. Losing 4 of their last 5 games. 92pts

#7. Boston - Playing the Devils tonight. A win tonight puts them in 6th. 91pts

#8. Philadelphia - Play the Pens tonight. A win tonight puts them in 7th and drops the Sens into the 8th spot. 91pts

#9. Washington - Totally outplayed the Canes last night. 90pts

#10. Buffalo - Got a much needed win against the Leafs. Life support still needed. 88pts

...why are you providing up-to-date standings when I've already done that?

Sorry, I didn't know you've been doing that.

Didn't see where you were posting it.

Could somebody explain how the Rangers have a berth?

With tonight's win, the Rangers have 95 points and 42 wins.

Capitals have 1 game left, with 92 points.

Bruins have 2 games left, with 92 points.

Philly has 2 games left, with 91 points.

If they all win out and the Rangers go 0-2-0, then it'd look like this:

Bruins - 96 points

Rangers - 95 points

Philly - 95 points (Rangers have the tie breaker)

---

Washington - 94 points

Basically, they have a berth because no matter what they do or their opponents do, they can't fall farther than 7th place.

Sorry - I should have edited. I figured it out from nhl.com. I was looking at the wins, not the points.

And the trophy goes to Detroit - big surprise.

Nice one Nashville - bye bye Chicago.

(Thanks again for doing this - you update way faster than the official standing page.).

Philly is unlucky...NJ has to win to clinch home ice advantage, and Pittsburgh needs to win to win the conference. Meanwhile, Caps just need to beat Florida and I think they'll be in safely.

Is this right - we're guaranteed the playoffs if:

1) We beat FL

2) FL beats Caps

3) Philly loses both (one not in OT)

4) Bruins lose both (neither in OT)

5) We OTL and Philly loses 1

And that's it, right?

Sounds right. One of those 5 will most likely happen, we could also lose in OT to Florida and Washington could lose in OT to Florida and we'd get in. But i'm pretty sure we get the job done tomorrow and i can stop getting headaches from reading these scenarios.

It would depend on what Ottawa, Boston, and Philadelphia does.

Washington wins against Florida. 94pts. 7th seed.
