Bret Hedican

Recommended Posts

Hedican is a great guy. He was waiving to the fans, and he knew this was his last opportunity to do so.

Chances are, he will never step again in his skates on the ice of RBC center as a Carolina Hurricane player.

I'll miss him; he is nice guy, a great person. Unfortunately, time has come for him to think about other things in life.

Hedican, been there since I became hardcore hockey fan, and I'll always remember him. He's there along with Ronnie Francis and Glen Wesley IMO.

IMO he should get a banner in the rafters along with Ronnie Francis, and Wesley when he retires.

My 5 year old daughter (a figure skater) had it in her mind she was going to win Brett's jersey. She had a pad at the game and kept drawing the #6. After they gave away his jersey she was mad and was crossing out all the #6's in her pad. She is a big fan of Kristi's and had the opportunity to skate and interact with her at the Factory Ice House in January. When I asked her what she would do with his jersey since it is way too big for her she looked at me like I was crazy and said "Put it on my wall Dad!"

I just wanted to put it out there that, even post game vs Panthers, Bret Hedican was gracious and waved several times to the fans, those that were left in the stands, and of course to the fan who received his jersey. He stayed poised, as always, knowing how disappointed he was on the loss. And how about that empty net save??? Awesome, to say the least.

He'll be missed whenever he leaves us for good whether it be retirement or trade. Kristie did let it slip about a move to CA. A real class act. Can't say it enough.

I'm going to be watching Dancing with the Stars to catch a glimpse of Bret & a possible interview. I'm sure he'll be there. He told me he would be unless they made the playoffs.

Thank you Bret Hedican for keeping it fun!

There's a good spread with Kristie in People mag this week. Brett, too.

I have to agree with every thing said here, I really like Brett, always have but the body is just breaking down and he's just not what he used to be. I hope if he's traded he can be a valuable part to that team's line up. I'm very glad he finally got a cup and furthermore I'm proud to have his name on the Stanley Cup under our team's name.

Good luck Brett

Bret was nothing but smiles the whole night.

After the game during autographs he kept a smile on his face, and greeted the fans with happiness

While he was signing he was overwhelmed with autos but he was loving every second

my mom had said that he was living life in the limelight now, and he responded with "im loving every second of it, because this may be the last time"

implying a retirement... -_-

I've had the pleasure of meeting him several times this year, first at Skate with the Canes..... I guess just mentioned my name in passing when i met him, I don't even recall it. Then I saw him on Casino night, and he came up and gave me a hug and called me by name. I said "I can't believe he remembered me", and he kinda got "upset" that i thought he wouldn't remember me! "Of course I know who you are, why would you think i wouldn't remember you????? OR COURSE I DO"

At the last game, i had just found out about his award, so i made a quick sign that said "Congratulations Mr Hedi-guchi". He grinned from ear to ear and winked at me during warmups.

He just has a way of making every fan feel special.

I'm 99% sure that he won't be back...... and it will not be the same for the "Bretican" fans next year.

But as his Canes Bio says: After his hockey days are over, he's going to shower his family with affection. What a guy.

I was the one who won his jersey, and I could see the disappointment in his face. He'll be missed.

Btw, Bret is indeed in Cali with Kristi. They just showed him after she danced :)

I wish the best to him. I told him good luck the other night and hope lots of happiness in whatever he decides to do.

He's an UFA this year....no contract. Thus, he can't be traded.

self-edit: my little sister went to college in Bloomington/Normal, Illinois 1989-1994. Our cousin had season tickets up the road to the minor league team: Peoria RiverMen. She had the pleasure of seeing Brett play for a short season only. She thinks she remembers him fighting. (She used to drink alot, tho).

First time poster here. I just couldn't pass up the oportunity to make a few comments about someone I have a lot of respect for.

Bret truely is a class act guy and will most definately be missed if, and it seems that we have seen him for the last time on the ice as a professional hockey player. He has had an amazing career and we have been so fortunate to have him here in Carolina. I am so thankful that he has a Stanley Cup Championship to show for it. It was heartbreaking Fri night to see him with his head down on the bench when the game was over and have to come back out for the jersey giveaway. But in true Bret fashion he gave smiles and waves to family, friends and fans. Then took the time to stop in the very long line for autographs after the game. He was the 2nd to last to leave that night and as always took his time and was very gracious to the fans.

My 9 year old also had it in her mind (as much as a tried to prepare her otherwise) that she was going to be the winner of his jersey and cried for the entire last part of the 3rd period when she realized that she didn't. She has met him a few times getting autographs and he was kind enough to sign a picture that I had taken of her with him. He took his time to write something really sweet on it for her. He told her to "follow your dreams". What a beautiful thing to say to a child. He has a big heart and made quite an impression on her. I know she will never forget it. She was convinced that he would have given that jersey to her if it had been up to him. Congrats Castro!

I think Bret has had some really great moments this year. One that stands out in my mind is when he turned completely around and raced back to catch Ovechkin then sent him on his backside crashing into the net without the puck and without drawing a penalty. Fri night he seemed to come out of nowhere with his incredible speed to keep the puck out of the empty net with 30 seconds to go to give our boys one more chance. As devestating as that night was, that was truely an amazing moment and I will never forget it. Even at 37 I still think he is the best skater in the NHL. If it wasn't for the injuries that he has had to deal with I know he would want to be back out there next season.

I wish him all the best with wherever life takes him next. He will be missed! :(

does anyone have any video of him catching Ovechkin or when he raced back to save the open netter? ...AWESOME Hedican moments!

No doubt Hedican is an awesome guy off the ice, but his play this year, when healthy, was a pleasant surprise to me. Last year I had pretty much had it with #6, his lack of offensive contributions and penchant for not being the most physical player, so when he went to Colorado to having surgery on that injured finger, I prayed he'd stay there. When it was revealed that he had exercised his option to stay with the team for another year, I was terribly disappointed. Anyway, my point is I thought he'd played a sound game this campaign. He took too many penalties, but he still had the wheels and his plus/minus is hard to argue with. He never had all the offensive upside of someone like Corvo, so he's not as easy to embrace, but he's been a solid part of the team ever since we acquired him from Florida for the '02 Cup Final run. I remember watching him back in '94 as his Canucks took on the Rangers in the Final series and I've got plenty of good memories of him from them up until the last game of the season versus the Panthers. All that being said, I don't think he'll ever get his name in the rafters with us or any other club he's put in time with. Wesley, yes, but no Bret.

You can tell by my user name what I think of Hedican. We used to sit by the glass for some game day skates and he would always wave or wink at my son. I have never met him,but anyone that takes the time to be nice to kids has got to be a good guy. If he leaves, I wish him & his family the best.

My first good memory of Hedican as a Canes was in the 2002 playoffs

vs MTL or Toronto he scored a beauty going down the left side

and beat the goalie with a nice wrist shot.

good luck to him if he leaves, hope he comes back for 1 more year. :D

I got a chance to tell Bret Friday night that we were pulling for Kristi and to please tell her that the fans here were voting for her (several people around me were backing me up). He was all smiles and you could tell he appreciated the support. He was talking about how she was saying she needed to step it up Monday night and I told him that there wasn't a doubt in my mind that she wouldn't accomplish it. Bret is where he needs to be right now. I know he wishes he was in the playoffs but I don't think anything could replace that sparkle in his eyes last night as he applauded Kristi's performance.

Another Bret sighting on DWTS...I believe I caught a glimpse of a RELENTLESS band on his wrist.

AND Mark, Kristi's partner was wearing a Canes sweatshirt in one of the videos they showed. :)
