Your take on the new Defense

Recommended Posts

Yep, crossing JR is the ultimate career destroyer. I mean, look at Babchuk. He crossed JR and he's never going to play for us again.....

Think back. It's happened. Does Irbe ring a bell?

Most teams, especially us, can't afford to give up on a solid defensive prospect like Babchuk. And be honest, how many here actually thought he'd ever be back? I find it hilarious to see how many people are excited he's back when in the past any mention of him got angry responses and suggestions to leave him rotting in Russia. Defending him got you nowhere amongst caniacs but now that he's back everyone loves him.

I dont think everyone loves him (at least those that were following the team when he was here last), but I do think many are hopeful that his skills and attitude have matured and he can be a solid defenseman for us now. Most get the salary constraints the Canes live by and Babchuk is a very reasonably priced and very available option to help rebuild the defense with. He was playing well before i all blew up and certainly he's worth taking a one year chance on, and IMO, thats more optimism than player love.

Im sure though that there are plenty of fans that are newer to the Canes and their only opinion of Babchuk is based on what they've read from others.

Our opinions are similar in probability to the opinions of someone looking at a watch face, seeing the hands go around and making up a story about what is going on inside the case. The likelihood of your actually getting it right is mind-boggling. Likewise with our opinions of what is going on in the world of Hurricane hockey.

Rarely, extremely rarely, does the fan-base of any sports team have inside information and have informed opinions. Babchuk reportedly was told one-thing and was given another. For all we know the trip to Russia was a mutually agreeable deal between Babchuk and JR with Babchuk in the plans to return all along. Why play in Russia? Perhaps the competition was stronger, the compensation was greater or Anton just liked living in Russia better than living in Albany. Regardless, if Babchuk pulls on a Canes sweater, let's all hope that he makes Jay Bouwmeester look like Shirley Temple skating out there.

I actually like the notion that he had the spunk to stand up for what he was promised or told would happen. And when and if it didn't happen, not shuffle off to Albany like somebody's Uncle Tom. I want to see D-men with "Don't *edit* with me" attitudes. We hear that "it's not the size of the dog in the fight" that matters. Well, Babchuk is one BIG DOG. I'm liking our chances better all the time in the back.

BTW for entertainment I watched some Ruutu hits the other night on YouTube. I'm not a hockey guy and often wondered exactly what "finish your checks" meant. I know now. You gotta be about half nuts to skate around without knowing exactly where Ruutu is out there. One of his biggest hits was delivered to some idiot who made the mistake of hitting his brother an little too enthusiastically. He likes it here on the Canes team. Maybe some brotherhood will develop with his teammates.

I prefer Ruutu style punishment to all the "wrasslin" enforcers do. I still don't get what an enforcer really does. What do they do the 5% of the time they aren't throwing 2 or 3 half punches to the helmet before they fall down, are separated and escorted to the penalty box. And who does the enforcing while the enforcer is in the box?

I get what Ruutu does and I had rather fight any day than be hit like I've seen him hit.

Back to the subject... we could be dangerous and cause severe problems with our Offense minded D-men. Teams that play us will be playing with one eye on Corvo and Pokenan. Could work out really sweet.

been watching old games on http://video.google.com/nhl.html (great site!) and based on the few games ive seen babchuk will turn out being a good signing, melichar not so much. there is one game i watched where the canes were on the right side of the net which was totally exposed, melichar was on the left and continued to stand there and simply watch as the canes brought it in and score- at which point he just stared at the goalie as if to say "why didnt you stop that?" i hope i am wrong but based on the very little i have seen and heard of him, not so promising. pitkanen i cannot figure out yet. i encourage you all to check out the site if in need of a hockey fix. dozens of archived games from all 30 teams.

You're 100% right about that last part. He made the ultimate mistake in crossing JR. You don't do that and expect to play for this team ever again. Not like we haven't seen it before.

Honestly, I'm not sure why we haven't heard anything yet. It shouldn't take him this long to be proven to still be injured so either the buyout would've gone through or it would've been cancelled and then we can put him on LTIR and not have his salary count against the cap. Then when he's healthy either try to trade him or just leave him until the end of the year when he's a free agent and let someone else make the mistake of signing him.

So if his head is still wacked out...and truly NO ONE on this board really knows the truth(100% speculation). How can protecting you self/family be considered crossing JR?

I say good for him if he wins

If not may be he can open a restaurant on Glenwood.

That is good to hear. I hope you are right. Unless Kaberle or Wallin play the best they ever had or Seidenberg is suddenly a top 4 defensman, and especially if you are right about Melichar, and unless we trade for one more defenseman, then Babchuk is really the only one left to fill that #4 spot on defense. It really looks like we are counting on that at this point. If he does though, we should be good, since Seidenberg and one of the other 3 should be at least servicable in that last pairing.
