Cole Back to the Canes

Recommended Posts

driving from asheville? you are a true fan!

10-15 times a year. But its harder now since back to back games have

become just about nonexistant. Atlanta is closer to Asheville so I try to

make the games there also.

On the one hand, not really the move I was hoping for. On the other hand it looked like JR was going to do nothing as this came in very late. So it is better than doing nothing. I don't personally think this move is likely to make much diffrence. Cole was here before the trade and was not enough to put the team over the top. Is he better now? Not sure. He has not put up great numbers.

On the other hand, maybe he will get Staal going (though he didn't last year), and maybe he will be so fired up to be back with the Canes that he will have a good run. Even though Williams has been so injured, I still think he has more potential than Cole, but Cole can play now, so that makes some sense.

This happened so late, I wonder if JR was trying to do something a little more but just couldn't pull it off and this was the fall back. Well at least he made a move. Maybe Cole will find his old magic.

I believe JR said in the interview this was what he was hoping to get done at the deadline.

What do you expect, he is talking to the Edmonton media.

Yeah I think people need to think back to Cole's relationship with this fanbase, this organization, and this community. This is his "home." It would be horribly unprofessional of him to go crazy while talking to the EDM press that he is thrilled to be leaving Edmonton. I'm sure he is confused right now, after all, if you watched his interview you know he and some teammates were joking at lunch that "looks like we didn't make any trades!"... and then bam - back to Carolina. Probably the LAST thing he expected. But I won't pretend to know what is in his mind.

It is safe to say that he will be welcomed back with open arms by all and a LOUD RBC Center. Just imagine how thrilled Staal must be. Some of you can focus on the negative all you want but here's the positives:

1) Should give Staal a shot in the arm

2) Cole will be playing with some emotion (at least at first) and he has apparently been playing better in EDM lately (although that could also be bad news when switching back to our system)

3) This should fire up the crowd some, thus firing up the team

4) This makes economic sense now and for the future

I really hate losing Willy :( but overall I think this is a good move.

What a day to be traveling, and I'm going to miss Friday's game :(

So a lot has been said and most points I would make have already been made, but I'll add this last bit.

Cole was widely recognized as a solid favorite in the locker room. Not only just Staal's buddy. He was the "music" guy, burning the CDs (before the iPod days). Ever notice he was always the last guy to congratulate Cam when the game was won? And always with a headbutt.

My point is, there are intangibles chemistry-wise that we aren't taking into account.

One last thing. The argument that we shouldn't be trading Justin for an injury prone player just doesn't make sense to me. 1 major injury vs 3. One guy playing, the other out. What do you expect? Yeah, give me a guy who has never been injured, and make him a first liner too, and BTW, take Justin, he might be good next year. I loved the sniping JWillie BTW, but even when he was healthy this season, he wasn't the old sniper. So that same argument being used about Cole not being the same applies to JWillie.

Looks like I gotta update my SIG again, but I'm happy about it this time!

Asheville fan here too. We try to get out there as much as possible (5ish or so games a year), and I think really fun when you leave at noon for a hockey game. Really make a day out of it. We usually get back by 5 am or so.

Oh, Cole's a great trade. Without sounding cold-hearted, freeing up Williams' contract for a UFA was brilliant. There's no guarantee Sully would have worked out here and we would have lost a great opportunity for next year. And to boot, there's a good chance Cole will shine and sign.

Yea but remember you two that the player we got rid of today was a great locker room guy as well, so let's not make it sound like Cole is gonna amp up the chemistry by tons or something...Williams for Cole, teammate wise, is a pretty even trade.

Maybe this trade was exactly what the team needed to "amp" up the team more, not saying Justin didn't have alot of chemistry in the locker room because he did, but now we have a guy that when he leaves the locker room he will be on the ice instead of the press box, and maybe this was the trade that wakes up other players in the room as well, maybe the change of scenery will do Justin some good but he will definitely be missed, as was Cole last year.

GREAT article from NHL. com Please read! http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=412406''>http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=412406' target="_blank">http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=412406[/post]

Also click on the play button and you can see the interview with JR on NHL on the fly & the fan poll has Carolina as the team who came out ahead of the 3 teams!

ESPN also only ranks 4 deals from yesterday as better than what Carolina did, so all-in-all seems like the consensus is this was a good hockey deal.

It really is quite... odd for lack of a better word how many times JR has recycled people in this organization. Cole, Babchuk, Mo, Cullen, Tanabe, Ron Francis (not sure if he traded Francis or not), it was rumored we were trying to reacquire Gerber, we tried to get Jeff O'Neill back and running... anyone else I forget?

Technically Babchuck was still the property of the Hurricanes if he ever came back to the NHL. Once Francis was traded he never played another game for the Hurricanes as the lockout happened. Jeff O'Neill was really never back with the team as he was here on a tryout basis.

The recycled ones are..Cullen, Tanabe, Mo and Now Cole. Cullen has definitely worked out, IMO Mo has worked out, Tanabe is just embarassing...I would have to put Lumpa Cole in the category with Mo and Cullen...though we will have to see won't we.

The funny thing is people act like were are trying to get back people like Malik, Ward and anyone/everyone realeased/traded by this team.

I think the Cullen recycling is a prime example of what the proper utilization, freedom to perform and a system can do to make a difference in a players career. Cole will be a completely different player than what they saw in Edmonton for most of the year just as Rangers fans see Cullen as a completely different player than what they saw the short period he was a Ranger. Cullen was labeled as a PP specialist at one time, turns out hes a PK specialist, who woulda known if not for the opportunity.

Traded him twice.

Well, well, well. Guess Mo's staying after this season after all. Rutherford states in his interview that Mo really pushed for this trade. My interpretation is that Rutherford wouldn't listen to someone who is just a temp/fill-in. Mo is back to say.

..................Um, No.

Your ".....Um, No." was in response to someone saying Brindy's contract is a bad one but your signature points out that Eaves is $91667 per point (and +8 BTW) but you don't seem to realize that Brindy is $129032 per point (and -30 BTW). I am not bashing Brindy, I appreciate what he has done for the team but it looks to me like you have blinders on in this regard.

This deal is just a deal, not a great deal, not a big deal, just a nothing deal to maybe shake it up a little. That's the problem though, it's just the same old, same old. Much like Mo returning, who cares. Canes aquire Cole, big friggin' deal. Been there, done that with Mo and Cole. This team is really starting to bore me to death with it's much ado about nothing moves. JR should have stopped after aquiring O'Sullivan. I could have got behind that.

It's great news to have Cole back with the organization. Hopefully this will be exactly what Staal needs. I was surprised Williams was traded but I'm for whatever could possibly make the team better. Wishing Williams the best with LA.

I think you missed he played 11 more games the season after which is a big deal when you claim it's the same numbers

True but I also see 2005-06 as being an outlier year probably for the whole league. You have to take into account how hard it was to get away with anything that season. Now that we are unfortunatly slipping back into the old NHL, his numbers are basically the same. Regardless, I think he's still good for 20 goals a season, is fast and can hit, end of story.

Sorry you feel so badly about the Canes. There are other teams to root for.
