Cole Back to the Canes

Recommended Posts

There had better be a contract extention here for this to make any sense whatsoever. I feel Bad for Williams but maybe he needs a fresh start with all the injuries he's had here.

Wonder what this will do to Ruutu in the line up?

Two hard hitting power forwards on the same team? I like it

And for all the people hating on Cole for sucking after his neck was broken lets take a look at the stats:

Year GP G A

2001-02 CAR 81 16 24 40 -10 35 3 3 0 0 2 0 159 .101

2002-03 CAR 53 14 13 27 1 72 6 3 2 1 3 0 125 .112

2003-04 CAR 80 18 24 42 -4 93 2 9 2 1 3 1 172 .105

2005-06 CAR 60 30 29 59 19 54 3 11 3 1 8 0 164 .183 <----Year Neck Was broken

2006-07 CAR 71 29 32 61 2 76 9 9 0 1 4 0 166 .175 <-----Year after Neck was broken (Same #'s)

2007-08 CAR 73 22 29 51 5 76 10 7 0 0 4 0 216 .102

2008-09 EDM 63 16 11 27 -3 63 5 2 0 0 1 0 145 .110

Yeah he had 30 goals with 22 games left in the season that year but I think if you compare the Stats with the rest of the players on the team, everybody was producing big. I think that his numbers show a consistant 20 goal scorer who has speed and chemistry with our team. Why all the hate?

Although I do hate losing Justin Williams, I feel like theirs a pit in my stomach when I think about him in a Kings uniform.

I guess I'm one of the few that think this is a pretty good move. I hate to see Willams go but if history repeats he will be back next year, well maybe. We wanted a strong, fast winger who can score with Staal and we got him. Cole brings

that and a lot of guts to the line. He also was a leader in our locker room. He isn't the player he used to be but he is still good enough.

let's worry about next year when it comes. Ruutu will move down but will make any line he skates on better. This move at least gives us a chance to make the playoffs.

Is this a deal that will translate to wins on the ice? Or, is this a "feel good" deal to win peoples' emotions? Cole is a class act but he has been slowed down by that nasty injury. Also, isn't he an UFA agent at the end of this year?

Yes. Cole is a UFA. That, apparently is part of the plan. This clears 7m over the next two years (JW contract). Although I think that was an awesome contract, if JW could keep healthy.

I'm not so much bummed about giving up Williams as I am about the fact that we traded a young sniper with a fresh contract and loads of potential in O'Sullivan for an aging, pending UFA. I mean, Cole will probably play well, but something tells me O'Sullivan would play better, especially in two years or so.

I like the trade to get Cole back. I just hope he likes being back here as he didn't sound that excited on the air. I think he can immediately help Staal and I like Coles physicality, something this team needs more of. I really did like Williams and I really wanted to see him start scoring again. I think all in all it makes sense as Cole is a free agent after this year and Williams still has 2 years left on a pretty big contract considering his injury concerns. I think the crowd will really respond to Cole being back and I think that could make a big difference for this team. Could this be what we need for a big playoff push? Probably not, but I am crossing my fingers.

This should not come as a great surprise to anyone, really. JR is known for recycling players formerly in the Canes system. Personally, I was thinking we would just resign him in the summer but am not surprised by this as this gets rid of Williams's salary in the process.

I think thats part of the reasoning. We're off the hook for William's salary and if it doesn't work out with Cole, we have more $ to work with this summer. I would think that JR wouldnt do the deal without knowing that Cole would either extend or re-sign though.

Kinda wished they addressed defense a little but it is what it is. We're a bubble team that made a conservative move that will maybe help in the present but can also also help in the future. Its an easy transition for Cole and the other players too. Unfortunately the teams around us all made moves to get better so Cole will have to ignite Staal and do some damage.

Casino night takes on a whole new meaning now.

Wow...JR never fails to amaze me...by doing the exact same thing over and over again. He just can't get enough of his former players. Does this mean if Grahame really does get kicked out of the KHL he'll be the backup here yet again???

I guess if this gets Staal going it's a decent trade. It would have been nice to have a younger, fresher face on the team, but Cole isn't over the hill just yet. I kind of got the impression that there were some hard feelings when the original trade went down in the off season so it should be interesting to see how this plays out. I hope Cole hasn't sold his house here yet!

I'm not upset that Williams is gone, he has been injury prone for several years and hasn't been able to produce for us, I only hope the best for him in L.A.. My .02 cents is that we should have kept what we got in return for Williams, fresh blood in our system.

Besides everybody here knows Cole's patent move to score, drive down the right side and cut across in front of the net and try to shoot!!! That wasn't working before we traded him because other teams knew what to expect!!

Also like someone stated earlier he is a RFA at the end of this season and truly if he's not pleased on coming back what do you think he's going to do at the end of his contract??? JR traded him in the first place because he knew Cole would want a "wad" of money to resign and JR didn't want to fork out the funds, what has changed in a matter of months?????

I believe JR thinks that with Cole back on the same line as Staal, the old chemistry will be there, oh well time will tell. I hope for us that this works out

And just a word to those saying how Eric needs Erik. You know what? Too freakin' bad. How many guys are we gonna cycle through that line until Staal's out of excuses, and JR is too? WALOC.

JR, what the hell are you doing?

Will someone please march into his office and replace that out-dated 2006 calender with a current 2009. Oh great, we've exchanged a guy with a broken hand to one who had a broken neck and a UFA. If he walks, we've lost a 2nd and Williams for nothing.

Every other team's fanbase huddles around the deadline Christmas tree trying to welcome new players. We seem to get rewrapped gifts we tried to take back to the store last year. This is ridiculous. I was excited to hear we got O'Sullivan...sure enough JR goes out of the way to screw it up.

Cheer up everyone, you just saved 500 bucks on unnecessary tickets.

I could have dealt with a Cole for Williams deal, but knowing we had O'Sullivan for a split second and let him go makes me sick

Me too :(

Looks to me like JR is staking it all on short term (making playoffs this yr w/Cole) rather than the long term benefit of O'Sullivan.

Serious questions about Williams ability to stay healthy apparently did not matter to the Kings.

I will really miss #11. One of my favorites.

Welcome back Colesy - one of the classiest guys I've ever met. Lets roll into the playoffs!

Unbelievable.

1) Getting Cole back is fine with me...when he's on his game, he's one of the better power forwards in the league, and we need something like that. However, he's not happy about being back, and I knew that was gonna be the case. When we traded him to Edmonton, he made it clear that he was moving on and leaving everything red behind. Well, what's he supposed to feel now? I wouldn't be happy either. Let's hope his mood changes.

2) But, we needed a 2nd line forward to help boost our playoff chances, but not give away anything too much for our future. If anything, go get a young forward who can help us now and later on. And what does JR do? Basically the opposite. He got rid of Williams and O'Sullivan, two younger players with potential, for Cole, who has really maxed out his ability. I was OK with Williams for O'Sullivan and a 2nd round pick...not thrilled because it was just a one for one trade (how can we help our offense with that? one top 6 forward for another?), but at least we got a young foundational player and a good pick...but nooooooooooooo we give that away for Erik Cole? It makes no sense...not now, and not for our future.

3) Look at how highly the Kings thought of Williams...worth a good sniper and a high pick. Folks we lost a great two way player and an even better teammate...the Kings won this thing hands down. Again, Sully and a pick wouldn't have been bad...but now we're just left with Cole. We got blasted in this trade...sorry to say that but it's what I feel. I mean JR didn't get any picks, any prospects, any long-term players...just Cole. Is Erik Cole worth O'Sullivan AND a second round pick??????

NO, he is NOT. God I am just getting angrier by the second here. Cole is a quick fix solution that may not even be that good of a fix...whereas you couldn't go wrong with Sully and a high pick. If we miss the playoffs, then fine, 'cause we'd have a young core player and a pick to take with us into the future. Now what do we have?

Erik Cole? That's next to nothing in my mind...we traded one injured forward who still had potential for another who has none. And no picks. Or prospects.

I'm done here. JR has gotten on my last nerve. It's like a bad dream...one that's lasted since our Cup run. And will continue to last until we revamp management.

How cool would that have been for O'Sullivan? Hometown boy playing for the Carolina Hurricanes! And not to mention he's young and potentially a great player. THAT makes me sick and plus the rumors that Cole didn't exactly feel happy about coming back. I want a guy who WANTS to play here.

The problem isn't trading away Williams or getting Cole, but if I understand correctly--JR traded Williams and O'sullivan for an exchange of 2nd round picks, a 5th round (next to worthless) pick and Cole? A player who is signed, a future RFA, what will be a better 2nd round pick for Cole, a future UFA and a throwaway pick? That my friends, is getting hosed.

Only problem with that line of thought is that O'Sullivan currently has ten more points than Cole this season. It isn't like he's a prospect that won't be in the line-up for two or three years, O'Sullivan could've easily slotted in as second-line center or moved to first-line winger with Staal.

I would have preferred O'Sullivan over Cole or Williams any day, but from what I hear O'Sullivan grew up in Winston-Salem and had a really jerk dad who abused him so he probably did not want to stay in the area, which is understandable. Cole has been playing better his past few games if I remember correctly, but will need to be resigned at the end of the year. Hopefully his poor play this year will help him come cheap. Sad to see Williams go, but honestly I dont think he would have done anything for us this season, just look at how long it took him to get back from his injuries and then he gets injured again.

All in all, I think Cole is the person who wants to play for this organization the most, and he was a fan favorite so he could possibly put some more butts in the seats, even if we dont win for a few games.

Welcome back Cole! I hope he will provide a kickstart to Staal. I'm glad we got Cole but it sounds like we really lost something in not keeping Sullivan. I'm not that familiar with him. Hopefully it will turn out well for us. It was looking like we were going to be the only team in the chase not doing anything. We didn't do much but hopefully we can make the playoffs anyway.
